And, yes, free revving is very bad, because the rate of the RPM increasing is very high. The acceleration forces are many times higher than when with a load. Overheating is not a problem in a properly working NA engine. Just be careful not to do it often. Alternatively, you can use partial throttle to get the revs up to redline in neutral. As long as the rate at which the RPM increases is not very high, it should be alright.
