As for gearbox issue, inspect it first. see whether all the components are still running right and not wearing out. the last thing you want to have is a loud and worn out input shaft bearing or some other issues (crunching gears etc) after all the work's been done and the g/box is in.
Im running a b16 gearbox on a b18 atm, you really go through the gears quite quick, as opposed to the b18c2 gearbox with longer 2nd and 3rd gear ratios. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you; i didnt like the idea at first but as i drove the car more it's actually quite enjoyable lol. Also the short shift feel is there, but not as evident as in a vtir/itr gearbox. Not 100% shure but bludger could be right - it may just take some replacement parts like shifter bushings etc to get that short feel going :)
