Vti-R Wanted, Help...

I'm definitely going to get the bigger throttle body :) I'm not in any real rush either, so I think just be smart and wait until I have everything then get it all put in at once, will save alot of stuffing around and will be more fun afterwards!

Part of me is saying 'get the ITR throttle body it's cheaper', but the other part of me wants to just spend the money once and do it right first go. I can get a s2 tb for just over $300 shipped from the US now that the Aus dollar is so strong! How strongly do you recommend the skunk2 product over OEM? And what would a ITR one set me back roughly?

I was planning on getting the goodies from Yonas, but I found one on here for abit cheaper, so I'll be getting that! :P

I can't really comment on ITR TB but rougly they go for maybe around $150-$300 used? I'm just guessing that one lol
I'm not too sure on the difference between the VTi-R TB vs S2 because I did it all in one go so I felt the difference between all the parts vs stock in one go and man it was a difference haha

Also it might be better waiting because when changing IM its easier to swap out the TB as well while everythings out :):) Also did you remember to get an IM gasket for when you change your IM?

Yeah I will wait to get it all in at once :) I'll keep and eye out for the ITR TB maybe I can pick one up really cheap, cheap enough to sway me towards it hahaha.

No I havnt got the gasket yet I was actually thinking about that. Do you get one with the manifold when you buy it new? The one I'm getting is still new in the box it's just been opened that's all haha same for the cai.

The s2 IM doesn't come with a gasket, you can buy a gasket for like $50 or something from Yonas which is the one I used which is better quality I think or you can opt for an OEM one from Honda for like $30-$40 I think

I opted for the ITR throttle body. Although it isn't 68mm like the Skunk2 product, it's still larger than the VTi-R one. Half the price of the S2 one too.

It's heaps wet up hear, so should totally roll his car into a big puddle... I mean, no way, I'm his mate, I wouldn't do that...

Ok, it's been a while since I last posted an update...

Since I last posted, I have:

-Fitted the Injen CAI + Skunk2 Intake Manifold
-Snapped my knock sensor in the process :/
-Bought a JDM ITR 23mm Rear Sway bar

The sway bar just arrived like 5 minutes ago, DAMN! it's solid! :D I have my ASR kit ready, so that is ready to all go on together. Hopefully this weekend if Pat wants to help me lol. And thanks Mike, yeah apparently it's some limited edition hence the unique colour.

As for the new intake setup: VERY happy with it. The Injen CAI alone was money well spent. It's very noticeable in the top end. The change to a single-stage manifold has also been very good. I really can feel that it's breathing much easier and it builds revs easier. It's a good feeling when it pulls harder and harder closer to redline. Next on the list after coilovers will definitely be some good quality header.

For those considering/wondering if the Intake + Manifold option is worthwhile, I can give you a firm YES. I myself was pretty skeptical about the manifold mostly, I read abit about people saying I would lose lots of power down in the low/mid range. Sadly I've only driven the car at like this for a couple days, as i'll explain further on. Here is what I can say from real-life, personal experience:

Pro's:
-Much more haste to reach higher revs when you give it some
-Car is a whole heap more responsive above 2500rpm, pedal feel is very nice
-It's definitely quicker (no, it's not just the sound making me think it's quicker. I can feel there is more power)
-VTEC crossover remains very smooth, but once in VTEC, it really takes off.
-The stock intake is so twisty and just looks so restrictive. It's a good feeling knowing your motor has a plentiful supply of fast flowing cool air.
-Fuel consumption is better. I'm not joking.
-Last but not least, who can go past the sound of VTEC through a CAI? The sound is incredible, it literally screams it's nuts off above 5000rpm. Not to mention the sound of single-stage crossover, it's just soo good. It's also nice to be able to hear the engine ticking away, it's almost like the larger intake chamber amplifies the noise of the engine ;)

Con's:
- Yes, there IS a slight flat spot in power just after VTEC crossing over, from 4600-5500rpm. I'm guessing this is due to the fact that the stock tune was for the completely different OEM manifold. The stock ecu has VTEC engage at 4600rpm. I'm guessing that if it was higher, at say 5500 or 6000rpm, this wouldnt happen. Personally, i'm not bothered as Hondata + a tune is on the way for me.
-Yes, there is a little less response down very low in the range, i'm talking <1500rpm here, nothing really to be worried about. This is inherent with the CAI.
-It's so LOUD! Not that I see that as a negative though, some might but. Just be aware lol...
-It's a CAI. You have to be careful of those deep puddles.
-Be very careful during installation of your knock sensor. Due to the deletion of the Dual-stage Butterfly setup, there is a plug that is let unplugged as the butterfly system is deleted with this new manifold. This plug is on the same wire as your knock sensor. Somewhere along the line, I've stretched my loom (specifically the cables attached to the knock sensor) and pulled/snapped the knock sensor right off. Be careful if you do this, Honda ask $260 trade price for a new one. I luckily found one from Adrian at Toda for MUCH less than that. But yes, with no knock sensor you will get a CEL and after doing the DIY paper-clip OBD scan, I found it was code 23, so I looked in the bay and found my sensor just hanging by the cable. Once that CEL comes on, goodbye performance lol. The ecu has started retarding my ignition, therefore making the car annoyingly gutless. This should be fixed by next week though, and it shouldn't do any harm to your motor.

That's my honest opinion of this combination. It is VERY worthwhile, I myself consider it money well spent. The knock sensor issue is of my own making, so it's not really a negative of the doing the swap, it can be avoided with care.

What may interest some is that I am currently still using the stock VTi-R throttle body! Unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to realise that the Type R TB I was planning on putting on opens the other way of the VTi-R one. To install the bigger throttle body you will need:
-Long Throttle cable from pretty much any other B/D series. The B18c2 one is very short due to the unique intake manifold design on this enginem, and the ITR TB requires a different mounting point and bracket. I will elaborate on this later when I post up some pics. But yes, back to the point that i'm still using the smaller throttle body. I think that after switching to the bigger one I should expect even better throttle respnse and maybe if I'm lucky even a bit more in the top end.

I can't really think of much else other than that... I've driven through a couple QLD storms and I havnt had any problems with the Injen yet lol, although I am alot more mindful of deeper puddles now. And apart from the knock sensor issue which bugs me, I'm very very happy and satisfied with the gains from the parts i've added. I can only imagine how much better it would be with a good tune though...

Next on the cards is installing this sway bar. After that, I have BuddyClub N+ coils on the way and then once I have abit more to spend I will start looking for some quality headers.

Springs and shocks next for me. Maybe Koni Yellow and Eibach Pro or sportline.

Yeah I intend to Mike. Really keen for this drive. I have everything, even new endlinks, all brand new oem items from Honda Japan (thanks Yonas and JDMyard for that).

I know that sounds bad, but the K20a is such an incredible motor, in rock stock form.

have you been in a ITR ? when i went in both i felt they were about the same powerwise ep3r vs dc2r, ep3r had more torque though
then again torque will make a car feel faster, my xr6 feels faster than my dc2 b20, but is it ? hell no , same as my mates

No, unfortunately I havnt had the opportunity to ride in a DC2r.

I take back my comment about B series engines. I was just over excited and a tad bit drunk lol, add to that the fact that my car is in limp mode and slowwwwww at the moment it just exaggerated the speed of the Ep3r I think. It was still damn quick though, for a fully stock car. I am still very impressed.

But after hopping back into my car, I'm more motivated than ever. It's stil a quick car, and it's a real buzz to drive. Love it :)

no replacement for displacement as they say. Unless you boost it. I love ej20 turbo. Now that is addictive, but you exceed the speed limit way too quickly. I guess that is the problem with the WRX.

Yeah that's true mate. I guess anything reasonably powerful combined with a turbo is going to exceed the limit quickly haha

ASR and 23mm sway bar went on yesterday... I'll do a bit of a write-up in a bit.

But first impression is WOW. Definitely the best bang-for-buck mod I've done, and probably can do. When carrying some speed into a corner, the car feels like it's turning on a pivot. The front just goes where you point it and the back just pushes you round the corner. Forced oversteer is also quiet fun :)

It is not a B18C7, have a look at the IM to tell the difference.

The lights are the same size, the lights and bumper are just moulded differently.

Definitely on the cards. Next up is colour-coded type R front lip and side skirts + visors. As for exhaust, I think I may start with headers. Also dont want anything really loud.

When you dump it, put on a lip. Then colour code skirts and lip. One of the reasons I chose EM1 was because it's got 'em both.

Don't like the gold badging tho'. I've never been a fan. Looks tacky IMO.

What tyres you running? Any plans for wider rims/tyres?

Headers and Exhuast are coming up soon for me too! Then Hondata... How's the J's Racing exhuast? Is it notoriously loud?

MASSIVE difference. Like I think I meantioned before, it's the best bang-for-buck mod I reckon you can do. it's so much nicer and pointier through the turns.

Tyres wise, get rid of the chinese crap, it would be downright dangerous in the wet. Brett,Timmy and I are all running T1R Toyos. Great bang for buck tyre. Actually when I got 'em I wanted RE001s but they were too exxy.

Nice looking rims, but don't go larger than 16" IMO

Looks the goods. Unfortunately de-barging is not an option for me. Both badges are 'plugged' into the body.

Yup, might actually keep to 15's if I can find them. As for tyres, I've heard good things about Toyo's. Personally I'm going to go for the RE001's.

Like I mentioned before man, any seller who is confidant in their car will get a RWC, no matter if it's needed or not. Honestly, it's only $75. If he's so tight, say you'll give him $12,575 then. That way you know for certain that it will pass roadworthy and the guy isn't just trying to pass on problems.

Some people will probably think I'm abit OTT about little stuff like that, but come on man you have to agree with me, if someone says they're car is '90%' certain to pass road worthy they'll get off their arse and do it. Unless he's an un-motivated seller and wont do shit.

As for the car itself, just skimming across the pics it looks good. But any car can look good in pictures. You dont know when they were taken, could be 10 year old pictures already. Just go look at it. Hell, pay for petrol and I'll drive you down there myself to have a look at it!

Any questions you have about a certain car can only be answered by going and looking at it. For all we know, it could be an absolute gem!

It's getting it up to roadworthy standard that can cost alot of $$$. That's what I said before though. If the seller is confident in the car they will get the RWC because they know that it will be cheap.
