i currently have 4WD ramps, but will need some wooden extensions to get me up there.
looking at those builds, i would love something to elevate my car up nice and high. a good 6-10" would be perfect.

At Costco now, they have a few jacks in stock, about 10 or so maybe. Going to get mine today.

It's a pretty cool place, they've got lots of cheap factory seconds and stuff. I got my 9 drawer tool chest for $160 with only a small dent, just make sure you examine the items carefully. Last 2 times I went, they had 1/2" 72 tooth ratchets for $18, looked like they had no defects.
The costco jack shits all over the SCA one, it goes under low cars and gets to full height in only 5 pumps. 1.5T will be more than enough if you're just working on cars, I'd think it'd be enough to lift the front of a Accord Euro too.
Also, Teng Tools sockets are definitely worth a look at. I've got a set of 1/2" shallow+deep sockets and they're just awesome, they've got a great matte finish and ooze quality. Personally, I'd buy Teng over Kincrome or Sidchrome. Have a look at the catalogue on their website, the prices are really good. I believe you don't need the receipt to claim warranty, just go to a distributor and they should swap the piece over for you if it hasn't been abused too hard (but make sure you check this before buying).
Depending on application, alot of brands will do the job. The main different with ratchets of different prices is normally the internal strenth/number of the teeth. for example : i have a worth 1/4 inch ratchet and it feels strong and the teeth are fine almost like silk ( slight exaggeration but it is smoooth as ), i also have a TTI 1/4 inch ratchet and it feels just as strong but there are less teeth, which means it has to turn further for it to "click". Out of pure lazyness of not wanting to change ratchets i put a pipe over the tti ratchet for more leverage and was undoing fairly tight 16mm head bolts... You dont need snap on or other 'high' end brands to get the job done. At work a few of the guys have alot of snap on gear, mainly because we have a snap on van come directly too us and have 'sales' on selected items every month plus have a lifetime warranty on almost all items. I've heard great things about koken sockets, well priced and good quality stuff. End of the day its all about preference.
Thanks Rayle and ceekay101 for your feedback. Rayle, i will definitely go the factory, thanks.
I created a new thread to discuss the costco trolley jack, with pics, see here.
I went thru the same journey as you adamc11 back in 1990.
Prior to that I only had a cheap and nasty Taiwanese socket kit, a few screw drivers here and there and cheap pliers.
Back then Snap On was the only widely avail top quality tools avail, with Aust made Sidchrome ( sockets ) and Stanley ( screwdrivers ) being the more budget but decent quality tools avail with KC tools being the next rung down in terms of quality and price ( manufacturing precision and QC in Taiwanese factories no where near the stds of 10 years ago let alone now ).
Bought my Snap On 3/8" ratchet and socket kit with extension bars ( still using them now, still v happy with them) as well as a set of Snap On screwdrivers ( big mistake only use them as spares now ).
Fast fwd to the present; my toolkit today comprise of a real mish mash of many brands as I always saw tools as lifetime investment and bought tools to suit my budget and need as I went along.
For the affordable tools avail today, all the brands mentioned in prev replies ie Kinchrome, SP, Teng offer great value for $. Even the SCA Calibre spanners are very honest and much improved better than the nasty superworks spanner they replaced. I buy a few of those SCA spanners in large sizes ie 26mm for hardrace toe arms ( only $14-15rrp, $10 or so on special ) The same in Kinchrome ( which looks and feel the same btw ) would cost $30-40 in such a size and something like Snap On would be knocking on $80 if not $100 alone.
Teng Tools often have specials on say a deep socket rail kit 3/8 drive for $40-50 or so; check out their website for the mthly specials.
If you plan to spend good $ ( ie snap on budger range ), it's hard to go past top brand European Tools like Hazet ( Sockets ), Stahwille ( spanners ) and PB Baumann ( screwdrivers ). None of these brand are bling bling/high shine etc like Snap On as the European maufacturers' philosophies and target audiences are vastly different. The above are the brands I have bought and used for many years and 100% happy and impressed with them, there are other brands also such as Beta and Fracom which I haven't tried.
It would be wise to spend the most on the tools you need and use the most ie 1/4" socket set, 3/8" socket set, small set of 1/2" sockets at least spanners up to 19mm , screwdriver set. Other less used larger size spanners and service tools that you dont use often you can get away with a more budget but still trustworthy quality items.
Another thing to consider is the rathchet head design...
When I bought my snap on 3/8 ratchet back then the socket release button wasnt avail on most bar the $$$ version but nowadays even the cheapies come with the buttons which is as handy as power windows in your car esp on 1/2" drives where you dont need to yank the socket out everytime. So try to get this feature on all your ratchets in 2012.
Number of teeth varies and fine teeth ratchets getting common and becoming std features in some lines.
The direction of the flick switch ie the ON / OFF position switch lever can go either way. I am so used to down for on and up for off for RH operation. Nothing bothers me more when my ratchets varies from one to the next while working on the car where I need to keep switching different racthets. If this would bother you also make sure you keep all your ratchet flick design consistent.
If you want to know more about a particular type or brand of tool or want me to expand on any of the above just let me know via this thread. I'm always on the lookout on tools for myself and frens getting into DIY anyway.
Yeah I got mine from dealer spare parts.
Auto stores sell a few different types but for b series the filter location is a bitch and I find the oem one works so well if I cant use my hand
I've seen the aluminium race jacks at costco (sydney) but I think the jack is only rated for 1500kgs (steel jacks of similar size from super cheap are rated for 2500kgs) I have also read some on-line reviews saying it starts leaking oil if you try to lift stuff too heavy eg: try to jack up the whole rear end at the centre tow point.
But if you do buy one I guess the plus side is provided you maintain your costco membership all products have a lifetime refund guarantee
I was able to undo the filter on my 86 accord by hand, was hard though. Did it up by hand also as tight as i could. It's in a really awkward spot to use an oil filter clamp :P
It is only rated to 1500kgs but that's enough for jacking up a car at one end.
