There was a point where you can get autos in 1-2 weeks. compared to 3 months for manual

Didn't they say that a manual VTi was quicker than an auto Sports?

the wait is shorter.. although wen i was ordering mine, the auto had a longer wait, especially in black or silver moss... i guess it depends on the dealer's allocation

Besides all that, if it wasn't for the service costs I would have bought an Astra over the Civic anyway.

With the popularity of the silver moss colour it makes you wonder why they have discontinued it....

My point exactly, cruise control was quoted on the Mazda3 at $391.66. So that's $1000 difference at RRP. I got a $1,146.18 discount on the Civic and only $601.80 (odd values so it rounded to nice figures) off the Mazda3. This was with full on road costs and with more accessories than the base models.

Thats fair enough. But you made it seem as if the Mazda3 had absolutely nothing when in reality it's only $600, one could easily get that thrown in for free. I personally feel that the Mazda3 is better spec'd. You get aux input, more powerful engine and split folding rear seat. But thats just my opinion.
