awesome job but at $17 per can, pretty pricey. the dylon stuff works great and only half the price
awesome thread. best diy to freshen up outdated interiors
Man weather's been bad haven't been able to take pics =(
Here's what I did - Note that I did not remove the carpet from my car:
1. Remove seats including back seats.
2. Remove kick panels + drivers foot rest, unbolt driver and front passenger seat belts
3. Remove centre console
4. Vacuum like I've never vacuumed before! Then used alot of carpet cleaner. Scrub the carpet and clean it well.
5. Let it dry then vacuum again. Drove with only the drivers seat until it dried out.
6. Once dry, get a wet towel and give the carpet a quick wipe over to make sure most of the detergent is all gone.
7. Mix the dye with boiled water and put it in a spray bottle. I put the two packets inside a 1.5L used drink bottle. Next time I'd use more to get a darker finish (or less water as I had some left over).
8. Spray the whole carpet with a good coat of the dye I used about 800ml of the dye doing this. Then get a brush and brush the dye into the carpet so that the colour gets into the fibers and to make it even.
9. Take the remaining amount and give the carpet a really good go over. I probably had about 300ml left at the end. I then just ran my hand (wearing gloves of course) through the fibers to even everything out. Let it dry. This took 3 days in this crazy cold/rainy weather. During that time I just drove around with one seat.
10. Once dry, you'll notice that if you run your hand over the carpet, it will make your hand black. This is the excess dye on the carpet. Get a damp towel (that you don't need) and give the carpet a good wipe down. This removes all the excess and leaves only the actual dyed carpet behind.
11. Put everything back together!
Now, to be honest, it didn't come out as black as I'd like, however it is a much darker colour than stock so I'm very happy. I have no doubt that if I used just one more packet of dye, or less water, it would be very black.I do however think that this is an awesome idea and am very happy with my results. Very even and even with wet white shoes, non of the dye got onto my shoes after I went over it with a towel. It did get all over my shoes when I drove around for a few days before the wipe down.
Hope this helps guys. Will post a pic as soon as the weather permits!
+ I think the Vinyl spray is very similar to a spray paint? If so I think you'll be able to do red lol
i really want someone to try red and post up the result
I think you should try it and post it up =]
i think you should try doing it red.
i might try doing mine black heheheh :P
haha maybe later
Tried red. still keen you get it red. But also considering black, as that is soo much easier. With red you'll have to make the carpet lighter in colour, as the red doesnt get the deep look, but has a grey under tone, doesnt look how i wanted it too anyways, but i've only done a section so im not posting pics just yet :p
I went to spotlight the other day & i couldnt find that exact dylon dye in that little tin. i think they may have changed the packaging. is this the right one now? -----> http://www.dylon.co.uk/products/dyes...vet-black.html
