D16y4 Skunk-2 Cam Shaft

Hey Guys i am in the market for Camshafts for my y4. This motor that i have built has got everything bar an aftermarket camshaft. The motor is build for boost and has all low compression internals.

Now First could i have a bit of insight on the theory of how a cam shaft works in relations to the Valves, valve springs and retainers. Also what is ment when you get camshafts that are named. Stage 1 2 and 3. When you get different stage Cam shafts do you have to upgrade valves, valve springs, retainers? Are the cams proportional to these components? Does anyone have any reviews of skunk 2 cam shafts for d16y4?

Any insight to all of these things is very very much appreciated as my understanding is a little clouded at the moment.

And yes i have done a few searches

The stages are only brand specific ..

for example buddy club in america starts with Stage 3, then stage 4 , and 5..
it means nothing ..
only a way of the individual marketer to brand their "Stages" of cams

ahhh right, so usually there are 3 stages?
mild.... medium and agressive would you say?

you might also notice that duration figures vary a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer ..
this is because there isnt really a standardised way of measuring duration..

not necessarily..
for example we have skunk2 stage 1 , 2 , 3 ..

then u have skunk2 pro1 , pro 2 , pro 3.

pro1 is more powerful than a stage 2 in some ways .. and more powerful than a 3 in some ways..

SO ... i wouldnt go off the stages of the cams at all .. i would be looking at these things..

duration, lift, overlap, and the closely related lobe angle..

ahhh right, and what would be the charasteristics that would be best looked for out of a cam shaft for maximum power on a built D series turbo low comp motor? D16y4 to be exact? and and which point do you have to ditch the standard, springs, vlaves and retainers for new ones?

i dont know about the best cam that will suit your app..
as you havent listed your other mods..

i dont really understand why you are using an NA cam in a turbo motor?
its a bit strange..

springs and retainers .. are for insurance purposes..
if your going to do it .. you should do it once.. and do it right.. do the springs and retainers as well..

valves .. there is no real problem with the stock ones .. unless u were chasing bigger numbers .. you would cut back the valves and do a bit of headwork on the seats..
and or possibly get oversized valves..

i think if you are looking at chasing bigger power. . you will have to look at changing your conrods as well .. as that is the well known weakest link in the d series engine..

Build the BEST NA engine you can, Huge Cam’s, Huge Compression, Huge valves, a unreal flowing head, a kick arse exhaust setup, retainers springs, pistons rods etc, and then just ADD 1psi of BOOST TO IT !!! do you think it will be better with the 1PSI of boost than without It ??



Answer = Of course it will be better with just 1psi of BOOST !! ok.. now add 10PSI do you think it will be even better again, of course !!!, now add 40psi !! again the same story stands true, assuming the thing holds together ! and that really comes down to choosing the right components and building it correctly in the first place. the BEST NA engine will always make more power with boost !



Very simple concept! but people just don’t follow it ! meh at internet myths !

Thanks for all your help champ, and yes the D16 Has allready been built with everything..... bar the cam shaft, including Eagle H Beam Forged Rods.

I do have my eye on some Skunk 2 Pro Stage 3 Cam Shaft, but apparently they are pretty laggy and screw with your idel.

But if you were to get very agressive cams such as these would this mean would get a different higher power band higher in your rev range... Possibly past your red line (d16 = 6500) if this is the case wouldnt you have to upgrade you springs and or other components so you could rev higher?

using the cam you have mentioned, or any upgraded cam, which will make peak power above the stock redline you will need upgraded springs and prob retainers.
an upgraded valve train is required anytime you plan to push and engine past the stock rev limit or you'll get valve float.
with the setup you are planning you'll pretty need a new standalone ecu. the ecu will also be able to aide with any idle issues as well so you shouldnt worry to much about this if you get a standalone ecu.

Internet Myths are better than a wannabe tuner..

he said he had a turbo motor..
i am being extremely pedantic..
did he say what turbo he had?
or even if he had a turbo on the engine?

noope..
some people are complete noobs with no idea..
im just covering all bases.. to make sure he KNOWS what hes doing..

i had the idea that he may have bought himself a low comp motor ..
think because it makes good power with a blower.. if he sticks a cam in there it will make good power.. now thats not the case is it ??

furthermore..
a good NA setup will not make good power on boost..
maybe your "magical" tuning ability can tune .. a engine with 12.5:1 comp .. on boost.. and make the "best" power...

shmeh.. what would i know .. im just a internet reader..
