Hey guys, whenever I'm at WOT and vtec engages, I get a lot of black smoke coming from my exhaust. I've also noticed lots of oil missing after a spirited drive. Would anyone know how exactly this happens? Bad gasket somewhere?
Cheers

your running rich
Black smoke is fuel, not oil, as butterfingers alluded to.
If it was oil, itd be blueish/white smoke.
Its the ecu richening up the mixture to make more power/protect from leaning out ie: doing its job.
Dont stress too much about that.
As for the low oil level, youre probably burning it, high revs youre more likely to burn oil.
How many km are on the car/motor, and how much do you reckon the oil drops?
Is it modified, if so, what mods?
Give us something to work with, otherwise we cant help you out.
Sorry guys, um, 99,000 km, I went for a 3 hour drive, bit of high end there. Lost about 2-3L of oil there. Only mods are ITR headers, b pipe and a twinloop. + a CAI
2-3 L of oil. So it wouldnt show on the dip stick at all, as u have like 4 L all up. Did u check the oil on level ground and waited 10 mins for all the oil to drop to the slump?
And r u sure it had oil in it to start with!
If thats whats really happing with a car at 99G km's with no internal work after a 3hr drive.
Your car fk'd!
Wouldnt be 2-3 litres.
No way.
No oil on the dipstick, before the drive it was completely up to the top dot. 100% sure as I topped up before leaving, checked when I got home. Had to go buy more oil.
then, my friend, you have a serious problem
does your car feel alot weaker? you could be losing compression, but even that wouldnt kill 3L of oil that fast.
Yep, your car is fuxxed.
What sort of driving were you doing?
Not 100% the whole time, it was probably 30-40 minutes of mountain driving, only full throttle on the straights. I did a compression test and it was approx 175, 180, 180, 185 respectively. Doesn't feel any weaker either
was the test donw before or after the drive?
I filled up approx 2.5~L to get the oil to just below the top dot. Will turn my car on, and check in another 10 minutes
Compression test was done a couple of weeks ago, only drove down to supercheap to get spark plugs and the tester.
Check you oil pressure! And u not using homebrand oil or something r u?
No, hahaha! I ran Motul for a bit, am running Castrol Magnatec (10w-40) atm. I just did the 10 minute check, everything's fine, same amount of oil as there was just before I turned the car on.
Compression being good, id lean towards external leak.
Get a cheap white sheet from big w or something, and park the car on it overnight, in the morning, look for drops.
Fully degrease and clean the engine and engine bay, topside and bottom side, then look for oil seepage.
I've been checking recently, nothing on my driveway. I will degrease and clean the bay and pick up maybe a timber board of a white sheet. But I've also been told when people are behind me and I'm at WOT, there's a LOT of smoke coming out the rear, so I'm still seeing if it has anything to do with that. Thanks for the advice!
sounds like you got a leak somewhere
Is there soot on the back of the car? or oily stuff?
Sounds like you've got a major leak somwhere
Definitely does sound like you got a major leak somewhere... a very major one to be losing 2-3 litres of oil for a 3 hour drive. I thought i had it bad when i had blue smoke coming out the back of my old dc2 and even then i was barely burning any oil at all... get this checked out asap. you dont want to see your car fked up.
There's a lot of soot on the rear bar and on the boot as well. Yeah, I didn't install the oil filter with the wrench. Anyone know of a good Honda mechanic in the Brisbane area? Really do want to get this sorted asap
Honda work shop. If the cars still stock internals
PCV valve failure or oil leaking out through the oil filter gasket seal. Only leaks while driving (oil pump supplying positive pressure), so the oil does not appear under your car in your parking spot, but rather in a trail as you are driving along the mountain road under heavy throttle. When you go back there next time, see if there are any cars that slid off the road after driving over your oil trail. :)
Soot on the back of the car isnt oil, its fuel, like i said, the ECU richens up the mixture under WOT, and even more under VTEC
If yu burnt 3l of oil in a 3 hour long drive youd know about it, it wouldnt just be a small amount of smoke, itd be massive massive plumes , worse than this,

We're you on a slant when you checked your oil the first time?? Giving you the impression that you were topped up??
Your engine can still compress fine but burn oil if the comp rings are good but the oil rings stuffed. Consider a thicker oil EG Penrite 10W-50 until you find the source of the leak
there are 3 rings in piston rings ay
compression, oil, and that other wavy ring thing

lossing that much oil from the slump would leave a pool when parked.. Even if it only leaks when running. It would still drip after a drive for a good 10 minutes!
Seems like way too much oil without a leak or an enormous plume of smoke
Im guessing you got confused and checked the oil straight after the drive while the oil was still in the head, not giving an even or accurate measure on the dipstick.
I made this mistake once

Only rev'd to ~5k rpm
thats normal mate.
just a bit of unburnt fuel.
see how much my civic pumps when i give it. i watched a SUV find its way through the fog in my rear view once.
was the car engine cold?
Nah, engine was not cold. I see a big cloud come out when I give it some, just can't really determine the colour. But yeah, sometimes it's to the point where I can see it illuminated by the car behind me at night
same thing happened with my old car. Was the rings/value seals. Sold the car before it needed a rebuild. Buyer was aware of this and didnt seem to be bothered with topping it up once every few weeks
When you say not cold, how long after driving did you wait before you checked the oil?
Your cars fine, your being paranoid.
Put a thicker oil. 5-30,10-30 is too thin
Especially if your hitting vtec or staying in vtec in summer.
Piston rings may be wearing out, but same with every other motor after a high amount of Km's or thrashing.
Don't stress, Do a compression test to make sure.
Put 15-40,15-50w.
As well change your spark plugs.
Who did the last oil change, because they probly didn't double check the oil after they started it up, oil does go around .5 litres lower after you start it up from 4 litres if they drained it out nicely.
You are burning oil. If its pushing out that much in neutral. It will do alot more in gear under pressure! best bet as said above. use thicker oil. Check oil every couple of days. And either sell it. Or rebuild it when she needs it in the future! Try a 10-40, You dont wont to go to thick. And insure you keep the 1st number at 15 or less. As you dont wont the oil to thick at start up!
Thanks guys. I am now considering selling the car, rebuilding it or doing an engine conversion to it. I just did an oil change yesterday, and am running Nulon 15w-50, will have to see how that goes as well
Your car seems fine to me... compared to my white integra back in the day. You got nothing on me!!
