RE001 On the Track

Hi all,

I managed to get my hands on a full set of Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001 tyres at 195/55/R15, while it was on special a few months ago. I am currently building up my DC2 in preparation for occasional (monthly) track fun, which I am pretty much left with the tyre decision to make.

I am aware that this is pretty much a street/ fast street tyre which has softer side walls for more comfort and "might" not last or be suitable for track use.

I now have a difficult decision of sticking to my RE001s or shelve out some money for Yokohama AD07s. I've heard alot about this particular tyre which is considered to be on par with the RE01-R. My current location allows me to purchase AD07s at considerably discounted prices of approximately 140 each.

Would any track junkies share their experience with fast street tyres on the track ? Or recommend that I get AD07s intead ?

If you got got the RE001's why would you change to another set of street tyres for track.
If you're gonna fork out money to buy more street tyres for track,

May as well go semi-slicks? Or are you planning to track your street tyres, and hoping for a chance to still use em on the street after?
Cause.. no chance.

I used my 205/55 R16 RE001 on my DC5R at Winton for one sesson once just to see how they went and they were quite grippy and I didn't seem to overheat or chunk off them too much. They would probably survive extended track sessions fairly well and be reasonably consistent, although I think when they get really hot they would probably start getting a little slippery and the tread will start chunking off.

If you can get AD07s for that good a price it might be worth going with them, especially if you have a second set of rims. Having a dedicated set of track tyres means you can run them until you hit the canvas and not have to worry about being able to still drive your car.

Unless you have a good amount of experience I would not go to a semi slick tyre yet. Street tyres are much easier to drive. I went to semi slicks (RE55s) after a few track days and I still regret it a little.

Why do you regret running semi slicks? :)

Just use the RE001s on the track until they're gone and then get AD07s.

If you can be bothered getting AD07s just for the track on a spare set of rims, then you're probably better off getting Semi's instead.

The RE001s performs really well on the circuit. Using RE001s vs Semis, I'm only about 2 seconds off the pace on current lap times - and that is actually for want of better driving.

Mostly because at the time I got them I didn't really have the driving skill to make the most of them, I would have been better off just getting cheaper street tyres and attending more track days with the change I had left over. Better tyres are definitely the best single mod you can do to make your car faster, but club level track days are not a race :p.

just stick with the RE001's

I have nothing bad to report about them , a good 4 days at wakie progressively getting faster and i am using the same set of tyres for about 20,000ks with hardly any wear.
PB is 1.15.2 and more to learn - There is mot much advantage in semis IMO , its something you put ontop once you reach an impassable time/skill level.

Stick with the adrenalin's or keep them for street and buy a set of semi's for the track. I used AD07's for a track day and they did do really well. But then the next trackday, I used the AO48's and the grip difference is crazy!! (same sussy set up both times)

re001 are fine for the track.. i did a high 1:11 with them at wakefield park which is a handling track, so they will be fine..

great times....the mx5 ? great to see a in car vid :)

nar, this was in my integra (the last track day i did in it) car was so capable :( could of done a 1:09 on semi's for sure, but was time to move on...

I race at barbagellos with re001 and for my driving capabilities they are fine :D

Definately stick with the RE001 for now.

It's however a good all round road tyre that is resonably quiet and quite comfortable, and not a replacement for the RE01R nor a competitor for the AD07, for that you'll need the new RE11 which like the RE01R and AD07 has more aggressive pattern, construction and compound where ride, noise and tyre life is not that important.

I started tracking on my re001 on 195/50 15 size on my EG5, initially on only 1.75 deg neg cam and they got ripped up pretty quick on near new tread depth and shoulders copped a hammering at the barg raceway as you would expect.

But once worn down the wear rate on track is much better and also now with 2.5 deg neg camber the shoulder is much better now.

I've since bought Toyo R888 in wider 205 50 size, and despite the grip being much more and car much more planted at the track, lap time only 2.0s faster.

I still use my re001s for tuning days for testing car setup, bolting on my R888s at the track for as little as I could towards end of my session.

Wont bother with the AD07 now, esp when the AD08 just released with claimed big improvements in construction and compound ( hopefully the typical advan/yoko tyres going hard after 1-2 years now thing of the past ). Many AD07 retailers are clearing the stock at discounted prices now to make way for the AD08.

bought my 1st set at bob jane n/bridge and my 2nd set re001 at BTC west perth when they are on special.

BTC have special on selected sizes on re001 every 2-3 mths so best wait for that so no need to grovel for a bargain price.

Can anyone give some input as to how the Toyo T1S and Toyo T1R compare? plz

RE01R are not actively distributed here in Australia but you can get them. Trackside tyres in Melbourne will sell them to you but I am not sure where you would find them in Perth. They will be very expensive.

Alternatively I got my set from www.tirerack.com when the dollar was not crap for around 200 a tyre for 225/50 16.

tried a few places for RE01R pricings couple of months ago, they were all above 300bux for 205/50/15...ridiculous prices...

Try the new Ku36 from Kumho...it looks really good...
Wear rating @180 so its in the range of the Falken 615 etc...

and then give us a field report...

Especially considering that a couple of months ago you would have been able to get them from the US for less than $200 a tyre for that size.

beeza, been told the T1R is almost on par with the RE001, on dry but the RE001 is better in wet. The RE001 is slightly better than the T1s in both wet & Dry.

I've never tried the T1S or Rs before so cannot comment.

I don't seem to go through alot of tyres to be able to try new ones, even for last years season and track days, just 1 set for the whole year...Maybe I'm not driving hard enough..LOL...

Indeed it is esp when it's now superceded by the much better RE11.

What tyre pressures do you guys run for the re001 ?

Ive just realized i should be running around 34psi for maximum grip on my re001 195/50/15 tyres. I haven't tried 32 psi but, will soon though :D

On the circuit? 40psi. otherwise 36psi for the street. Cold.

Ak ok,so they need to be hard to keep the sidewalls nice and firm but not to hard that you lose traction.Because there's a point where your tyre are too hard and you slide right?

Yes definately, you dont want to overinflate so the tyre ballons ie the middle part of the tread overheats, and also you lose contact area.

I find on my eg on re001, I run 35psi front which becomes 45-46psi hot after a few hot laps. Any more than 45-46psi hot the middle part of the tread gets hotter than it should compared to the inner and outer tread areas.

At the rear I run 35psi cold also which becomes 39 psi hot.

So for the re001 to balloon out the mid tread takes over 45psi hot pressure for that to happen, compare to the Toyo R888 which balloons at 28psi hot! Yes that's right 28psi hot and that's a R compound track tyre!

i think re001 is good value for money, for beginner that might not be driving as smooth as the pro.

Anyone find difference in performance with the re001 made in japan and one made in australia?

my tyres say made in japan. AFAIK all bridgestone tyres sold here are made in japan , since bridgestone is a jap company. Correct me if wrong lol

You are wrong alright, very wrong.

The re001 was orig imported from japan ( aprt from commodore sizes ie 234/45 R17 )before Australian production using moulds from the japan line with the same compound composition started some 1 year ago on all popular sizes. The re001 range is now mostly made in australia in terms of volume aprt from the uncommon and exotic sizes.

The Australian made RE001 has raised a few questions in various car forums in the past year, I'm surprised as a mod you haven't noticed this Ben in the past year.

I've attached an image of an old re001 BTC ad below, the Aust flags next to the prices denote the Aust manufacture.

Apart from the premium end of the Bridgestone tyres such as the RE050/050A, ER300; lower end mainstream tyres such as the ER592 had always been designed and made in Australia for cars such as Falcon, Commodores and Magnas etc. And before that Aust manufacture of B/stone tyres such as the supercats/steelcats range dates way back to the 70's and 80's.

On the b/stone au site, they have added aust made symbols on the tyres' spec sheets some mths back where they list tyre sizes and load ratings.

Being a mod has nothing to do with that , simply didnt notice rofl.

So since you know , can you answer the above question ?

I gave the Toyo T1S's a go at the track yesterday.First time on the track and although I have nothing to compare too,they went bloody good!

I'll probably do what EG30 suggests... and stick to my re001 for now.. and replacement them with AD08 or RE001s again when needed...

Btw, can anyone recommend a good camber setting and tyre pressure for a dc2 ?

should be similar to the eg setting prev posted. They share the same chassis layout

Jut put on re001 on s2 replaced so2 front and so3 rear. re001 no where near as good:thumbdwn:...they squeal like a pig..everyone can hear you ripping it up..so2/3 had a similar feel to R rated tyres..would not waste my time with these at the track as the amount of grip you get from r rated tyres would make you feel a lot more secure on the track

same. E240 on this forum was not far behind his PB ,on RE001's (1.11s or so on them) around wakie. They are simply a good road tyre so I think they perform great on the trackfor what they are.

whenI firststarted racing I went on road tires... they were melted by the end of the track day...first time out on semi slicks (aka r rated rubber) my time dropped by 9 sec...can be different fro everyone...when I used the so2/3 in the mountain street runs they would heat up nicely

oh for sure i agree semi slicks are fanstastic - and will drop your times. But its perhaps a better way to learn as best you can on a lesser tyre (such as RE001's) ,get as good as you can then finally use some semi slicks of choice and watch a few seconds drop off. The point of this thread is that RE001's , are good for the track and will give good results. Not race car worthy like semis but they are quite good.

yeah I agree ...though if a tire is squeeling so much on the street, the compound is to hard,,it feels like a harder compound then so2/3...s02/3 would have been a good beginner tire for 1 track day..they heat up nicely and get that sticky look that semi s get when hot...if I had a photo of what the tire looked like when hot it would be more convincing...

i just belted my adrenalins around the new MDTC and they were a bit lacking.

what was good was they held consistent tyre pressure throughout the day and i didn't have to keep letting pressure out.

found that they squeal a lot, but doesn't mean they are about to break loose. the side walls are also too soft.......but for a ultra high performance road tyre i still expected more.......

the adrenalins are a street tyre.......last no more than 1-2 laps on a track

yeah they sure squeal a lot and sidewall softish as a forgiving road tyre.

for road tyre with track biasing with B/stone's latest asym philosophy, you want the RE11, the RE-01R successor.

Re001 excels in maximising grip on the unloaded tyre by having more give on the widewalls and the outer and inner sidewalls are also diff in construction. The fact that they are quite good on the track is a bonus as B/stone doesnt market the RE001 as a track biased tyres like the RE11, and the newly released full semi slick RE11S.

I find Re001 are pretty good. Maybe I haven't seen better.

Requires smoother driving to minimize squealing which I had on MTDC.

But of course, these tyres are cheap for 195/50/15 - $114 a corner.

Those who are looking for purely quickness then you should be looking for more hardcore tyres and hence pay the extra $$$. But for fun, I find these sufficiently good.

Rubbish, I have tracked my current set of Toyo T1R's once at Wakefield, and once at Oran Park south (Both full days of driving) - More than a year later, I am still using the same set on the street with about 25-30% legal tread left. I have also done at least 15,000kms of street driving on them, since I have owned them over the 2 and a half year period.

Street tyres can be used on the track, and then used after on the street.
They teach you alot tbh. You can get the rear of the car sliding around easier, and it teaches you control.
But yeah, Semi's are better. :D But you cannn use street tyres.

My re001's did two track days and over 15,000km of road driving both spirited and normal driving. They still had about 50% tread with a bit of camber wear in them since i'm running -3.5.

I haven't read all the posts but from the OP I think you should consider buying a set of semis if you're going to be tracking monthly. First time out on street tyres is fun as well. It's not all about getting quick times, it's about enjoying yourself and having fun out there. If your worried about times then you should consider semi's. If you choose to run semis you should also considering getting a baffled sump and maybe if you got a bit of extra money an oil cooler as well.
