[CU2] Does your car have an issue with a "post-combustion detonation sound"?

Mark Higgins from HA made the following comment in a recently published article regarding the "post-combustion detonation sound" that has been reported by some owners of the new Honda Accord Euro.

"It's a handful of cars. We've sold 9000 or 10,000 Euros in the past year and it's around 60 vehicles maximum."

To guage the acuracy of this comment, and to guage the extent of this problem would owners of a CU2 with this "post-combustion detonation sound" please indicate if they do indded have this problem or think that they may have this problem.

I went with "maybe/not sure" since there wasn't an option for "definitely no".

Also, the poll here would most likely not reflect that of what Honda has said because pretty much only car enthusiasts, honda lovers or specifically CU2 owners who have the problem and looking for a fix on the net would be a member or lurking on this forum.

The majority of the people who buy the CU2 just buy the car for what it is and of those who don't have the problem then the chances are most likely they are not on this forum. They would basically be out there enjoying the car. ;)

The poll is only to identify those that may or do have the problem. I would like to see no one out there with the problem. But unfortunately it's out there and it exists. People that don't have the problem are not required to answer the poll at all.

If that is the case then there was not much need to make a poll imo. I honestly thought that you wanted to see from the poll whether the ratio of problem to no problem CU2s provided by Honda is an accurate indication of the extent of affected vehicles.

Anyway, in your case I would assume it would probably be better to just have the CU2 owners who have the problem or are unsure/maybe (think they) have the problem to just sign up or something. :thumbsup:

I didn't know any other way of doing it. Honda talked in absolute figures and gave a very specific number affected. I'm just trying to get a figure overall from people on OZHONDA. Maybe if he came out and said:
"It's a handful of cars. We've sold 9000 or 10,000 Euros in the past year and it's around 60 OZHONDA MEMBERS' vehicles maximum."

Then he might be more believable.

The first vote was actually meant to be a no. They choose the maybe / not sure option because there was not a "No" option. I am only trying to establish the number of affected vehicles. Not the ratio between affected and unaffected.

People are going to want to vote, and if they don't have the pinging they'll pick maybe. Can you change it to include a 'definitely no' option too, so your poll will be more accurate? Your tally of pinging vehicles will be unaffected too!

I don't have a CU2 and so I can't vote but I'd like to see the results. Just because I don't have one yet doesn't mean I don't want one. The pinging issue reported in this forum and others as well as forums overseas is enough to put me off buying one until it's fixed or until the V6 is launched in OZ. Hopefully if it is launched, it doesn't ping as well (lol).

My local dealer principal did not even know that such a V6 beast exists and will be made in Japan for the North American market. The local dealer principal told me that there are no new models to be expected from HA this year.

I wonder why some one would rate this thread a 1 = terrible. What's wrong in finding out the truth????

So true, but whilst is still an ongoing issue people will continue to talk about it. The sooner this is over the better it will be for every one.

Probably should have said for autos only, I haven't heard of a single manual Euro that has this problem.

I have the manual and it has the post combustion noise.
The noise is faint but anyone who knows anything about engines
would be able to pick it up.
Of course there are members with CU2's who may not be able to hear this engine noise, but actually have it in their car. And thats just to bad.
Honda can justify all it likes at $45,000 i dont want no frikkin noises from the motor.

My car has done 6,700kms, from here on end im just floggin the crap out of it.
As i said before between 4 and 5000 rpm is where it's at with the Euro.
The euro loves to be revved so do it rev hard and enjoy....

That's so true. I could imagine there might be some hearing impaired people out there that may not be hearing anything at all. I hope they don't miss out on any possible future fix.

Sorry to hear you ahve the problem as well VIDSEURO. I tend to agree that people are likely to have the 'pinging' issue but are either unware or assume it's normal and haven't questioned it.

I wonder how widespread it really is and whether the noise is an engine damaging noise like pre-detonation...I am about to make a purchase and my heart says Euro all the way, but my brain is starting to think perhaps Mazda 6....Arrrgghhhh!

Mine is definitely pinging now whoops I mean post-combustion detonation :). I definitely did not hear it from new but I started to hear it after hitting 6000km on the clock. It's pretty obvious when the engine is reving around 2500rpm in 5th gear before changing down on a hill. At the moment I'm not too worried but I guess I should notify Honda.

Quick update on post combustion noise: seems the noise is more prevalent when I'm filling up with Caltex Vortex 98 than if I did with BP Ultimate. With the Ultimate most of the time the noise is so faint / non-existent that I can't even hear it even with the soundsystem off!

I wonder if Australian fuel is really that shit. The CL9 had different tunes for each region (US, EU-AU, Japan), while the CU2 is the same for all regions.

Has anyone taken the dive and tried 100 RON ethanol mix from United?

Well that is quite interesting, that CU2 is the same tune for all regions. If that is the case then I don't even want to know what 95RON fuel will do to the CU2 engine. Overall post-combustion noise aside, the Ultimate seems to provide best power / responsiveness ratio vs the Vortex 98 - bar the cost of fuel which has just jumped to $1.27 overnight from $1.12 here in Perth.

Unfortunately 100RON is not available in Perth - unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

I have just done a Sydney/Melbourne and back trip. Started with a tank of 98 octane Shell and had a little bit of pinging on day one (I have never had it bad). I filled three times with 95 octane (Mobil and Caltex I think), twice in Albury and once in Melbourne and I have had no pinging at all.

Don't profess to know why but thinking back it seems to me I only notice the ping when I have a tank of Shell 98 octane on board? By the way the worst economy I had was on the first tank also, and there was limited Metro driving that day.

What do you think of BP's 95 premium Type R Positive - do you think in times of high prices it is an acceptable tradeoff to Ultimate?

It would be good if someone with a pinging CU2 becomes a guinea pig and test a tank full of 95 RON, say BP premium. It would open up a world of discussion and 95 vs 98 RON again if the pinging issue was solved with 95 RON.

This is unrelated to the pinging issue however in the last few weeks I have started using Vortex 95 on the advice of Buddah (thanks buddy) and have found no difference in the fuel econony when compared to using BP Ultimate 98. Car feels no less responsive.

I have only used 95 a few times as a top up only in my CU2.

I used to use it a fair bit in my ex '07 Corolla, but I swear I got better fuel economy with the Ultimate. I really don't know about power?
I am of the understanding that it is of a way better quality as well.
It might be just marketing, but for the $3 - $5 saving a tank you would get with 95, I prefer to stick with Ultimate in my CU2.

It's like that Ultimate diesel. It might cost 10c+/L extra, but my Prado absolutely loves it. It gives it more power, and more economy. It costs me like another $20 a tank, but I can only get it in Perth, so it is like a treat for my car!

They do say that you should use minimum ron possible for power though, but I think there is more to it than that.

That sounds exactly the same as mine now. I only started to hear something around the 5,000 k mark. (Mine is a manual by the way) Mine sounds like a metallic rattle, almost like a cam chain rattling or something. (I know thats not what the noise is, just trying to describe the sound)

I found that my car was worse for both economy and rattling noise when I used Etahnol blended 95 octane petrol

Can someone who is currently using 98 RON and has pinging, do a test by running a full tank of 95 RON?

Ethanol is a not a good mix with the CU2, so I'm told. In any event it is a false economy any saving is more than eaten away by the drop in economy. As I said before I'm sticking to the 95 octane. Sydney to Albury on 98 Octane 8.9 L/100k. Albury to Sydney, same driving conditions, 95 octane, 8.8 L/100k and no pinging!

I know ppl who has tried both 95 and 98 (at diff time) has combustion (aka pinging)problem. I want to know if anyone using 98 from the begining (except the fuel from dealer) has this problem as well?

Well I run 98 ron, and I no longer have the "noise", actually, I have traced my noise to loose exhaust bolts, that I tightened myself and used aviation grade temp resitant locktite on...seems to not have come back. Maybe some others have this problem and NOT the post ignition issue???

Fantastic. :thumbsup: Did you notice any specific bolts were loose, such as header bolts, or did you just tighten them all (headers, cat, muffler)? I'll take a look at mine on the weekend.

Yeah, the kind of sounds a loose bolt would make is what i have... was it an obvious looselness? I too would like to know which bolts it was. If you could let us know it would be appreciated...

I tightened everything, including heat sheilds, there is no "header" bolts as such as the exhaust manifold is cast into the head. I just went to town with the loctite...

Did you check the spring loaded bolts between the header and the 2 cats?

Yes, they were still tight, however I did remove them and loctite them to. I am merely suggesting that people give it a go, seems that most "dealers" and their "technicians" will only find a fault if the computer tells them its there...

well, I originally voted no as I haven't heard a thing but now I am hearing a faint pinging and my missus said to me the other day that with the window down it was rattling.

Then this morning a work mate said as I drove past him on the road yesterday that the Euro was rattling its head off. He's a mechanic so I asked him for more info on the sound and he just said ' sounded like it was pinging its head off'.

Oh well, thought I was a lucky one since it has done 20,000km..... :(

I have just sold my car. I hope the people whom have the problem have it addressed soon, I certainly am glad I went to the trouble of finding it and fixing it myself, and it being a simple problem and not the "pinging". Good luck guys, having sort of been there in thinking I had it, I feel your pain!!!

Honestly, it was due to a change in family circumstances, we have 5 cars, and 2 people and only 4 garages, I was already selling my Nissan Patrol and the missus decided to get another dog. I don't put dogs in cars so I am buying a dual cab ute which will replace both the Honda and Patrol. I love the car and it will be missed, and level of luxury, handling and outright features will also be dearly missed...

Congrats on your sale, how much did you end up getting for it if you don't mind me asking and how many km's?

Now where near enough $$ to pay out my lease, but slightly better than trade, it had just over 13,000km's...immaculate, i am driving my "non-dailies" at the moment, both get about 300km to a tank...the Honda was a little better on fuel LOL...

using bp ultimate sice having it, never try other fuel,but,still have.

Have done about 3500km's now on the CU2 Euro, nearly emptied the tank on the last run so now I'm pretty sure 90 - 95% fuel in the tank is BP Ultimate 98.

Still get the "metal ball in baby rattle" sound but it is not noticeable enough for me and I've stopped worrying about it and put it down to a characteristic of this Euro.

Interestingly, I have had a close look at my CU2 fuel cap and it mentioned that the CU2 is "Ethanol fuel suitable"!!!

almost all new car (2004 and above?) have this note on the fuel cap
