idling hunting after engine gets hot

Hi guys,

Lately I've noticed that my car's been idling strangely. The car has died on me twiced when I stopped at the traffic lights and no I didn't stall the car. I have no idea whats wrong with the car cause I've never had this problem before. When I start the engine early in the morning it's fine but if I've been driving for some period of time and come to a stop eg. traffic light, the car would start to idle up and down as if the engine is going to die out on me.

If any of you guys have an idea or know what the cause is please let me know or give me some advice on what I should do. Your help is much appreciated.

take it to a mechanic and get them to check your distributer, i had same sort of problem with mine, and it turned out to be the coil insde the dizzy, or if u got a friend with similar motor. Ie aother b series, try their coil and ignitor in your dizzy and see if it fixes the problem.

also maybe try checking out your IACV (idle air control valve) giving it a clean might fix it, i have the opposite problem with mine, it idle hunts until the engine is warmed up.

Check your vaccuum lines.

Slight leak will cause rev hunting/fluctuation at idle.

But id go with the iacv first.


Any signs of loss of power? Or hesitation?

gets hot or gets warm?

Failing FITV or ICAV - Swap both with know working ones (off almost any b or d series) to narrow the issue down

Idle hunt only after i stop the car after driving for a period of time. Check and clean IACV but that didnt solve the problem. I unplugged the VAFC and reset ECU but that seemed even worst. Then i decided to check the fuse box and found that one fuse was blown, replaced a new fuse and now its working OK.....

which fuse was blown that could have been causing your problem?

Check your TPS

If all else fails check your O2 and MAP sensors too.

I think it was one of the back up. (radio) fuse. It was blown and i decided to replace it and turned out to be fine

Throttle position sensor. It's the sensor on the opposite side to where the throttle cable connects to the throttle plate hinge.

I'm GLAD the car's working properly now...

What was the problem

I'd say Back-Up Fuse... or you may have air-bubbles in your coolant !! need to bleed out the air.. this can cause an erratic idle ONCE WARM..
