hey guys, im looking at getting my gearbox bearing done as its making alot of noise, has anyone done it recently? how much did it set you back? is there any easy ways out of it?

'gearbox bearing' is a bit vague dude
gonna be a few hours labour considering the gearbox has to come off
i cant realy explain further, someone just told me it was the bearing, so not sure :S guess i have to get a mech to check it out
yea gearbox has to come out I got quoted $6xx to get it in and out and done, $3xx to bring it to them to replace this is for the input shaft bearing.
should consider doing clutch and clutch bearing at the same time and repairing any drive shaft boots if worn.
good luck, throw aside an extra few hundred in case of complications.
K how long would it take rouphly? Also can this b doing any damage? Or is itvjust the noise? As i wont b able to do it soon
damage may be possible, eventual failure. You're main concern is the input shaft bearing seizing and thus damaging the box.
I left mine for about 6 months before doing it cos I had no income for a while, it's something that can be left for a while but not a good idea for long term
just get another box it'll be cheaper.

how much is a second hand box worth? if its anymore than 400 it will be cheaper to get the current one repaired wont it?

problem with a new box is you don't know whether it has the same problem or not
AND you'll end up spending money to bolt off the box and bolt it back on
just get your current one fixed, saves you the headaches if it was all gravy before the busted bearing
yea, I wouldn't resort to getting a new box if I knew I only had maybe a bearing or two making noise, plus I own a b series so it's not cheap =p
get is fixed when you can, it's not something that will fail overnight.

another box is about $600-1200 depending on which B series box u want.
to fix a bearing for a box you need to rip it apart & press the bearings out.
The bearings aren't cheap either, about $200 last time i looked. The labour to pull the box in & out is about $350 + ripping the box apart about $300-450 (depending on who does this for you).
Its is pretty costly, cos i had to pull mine out to do the LSD
It isnt a b series its a d series not that i think theres much difference, y is dropping a new box in such a bad idea? My bro might be able to switch a box, is it a hard job?
D series boxes are much cheaper, can be had for as little as $200 or less.
I wouldnt even bother trying to rebuild a D series box.
If you've got someone to change the box even better
i had to get my a 2nd hand one for my car, that saying, i later found out that instead of having issues with 1-2nd gear, i had issues with 3rd gear grinding, it'll be better if you know the actual condition of the box before putting it in, and it cost me $1250 to changeover

changing a box is pretty much the same in almost all cars, if you've done one you can pretty much do any of them. Pulling a box apart is different.
D series boxes are the most common ones
ok well weve done it before, but does the engine come out? Also, were just gonna do a straight swap, not gonna rebuild, no point, and my reverse crunches sometimes so it is probly a good idea to swap for a diff one anyway

Its not screetching at all, it makes like a power tool noise all tje time in every gear, it sometimes dousnt do it in first gear, its like a ver fast pased dadadadada that gets faster as the revs get faster
Sounds like the input shaft bearing then, especially if it follows the RPM and it slows back down after upshifting. If you can find a honda specialist, they can replace it quickly without wasting labour time, especially if you know your gearbox is perfect other than that noise. I would prefer to fix up my good gearbox than to get a used one of unknown condition.Quote:

he said honda specialist not Honda Australia.
A good honda mechanic will be able to do it cheaper and fast if it is the input shaft bearing.
If its the input bearing and not the main bearing its alot cheaper.
I think Aaron is right, the #1 input bearing is usualy 1st to go as it's the furtherst from the oil.
FWIW, we charge $400 gearbox in & out (R&R)
Then B-series gearbox overhaul is an extra $250 + parts
The #1 input bearing is approx $30 from CBC or other bearing supplier.
You'll need to check the bearing at the rear of the input shaft also, as this may be gone too.
Re reverse,
Replacing the 1st ~2nd hub ring & sleeve should sort this out.
These are approx $385 from JDM Yard or JDM Concept etc
Use that as a guide to compare the cost of a replacement box, say DC2 ITR...
Bare in mind your existing box still has a value & can be sold off to recover some costs.

ok buetifal, dosent sound as bad as the main bearing, so to give my gearbox a good going over with new parts, around 800-900 ? what sort of time frame with they need the car? obveously depending on how busy they are.
Could you quickly check if the noise goes away if you press the clutch pedal in while your are driving? Also, while you are holding the clutch down and moving, just press the accelerator a little bit to get the rpm to 2000-3000 rpm. If the noise disappears under these 2 conditions, then it helps confirm that it is the input shaft bearing.Quote:

Then it points to input shaft bearing. Common problem on gearboxes of that age. Get it replaced and you'll be sweet. At the same time, replace the clutch release bearing, lube the clutch release fork pivot and inspect the clutch for wear.Quote:

I don't like redline. A few people report that it feels smoother at first and then it gets very notchy. And redline does nothing for input shaft bearing noise.Quote:

Cheap and easy. If you buy a new OEM clutch release bearing and bring it along, it will take 10 seconds to pull out the old one and slide the new one on.Quote:

you can DIY but might be a pain in the ass when it comes to getting those circlips out. Best to get someone who knows what they are doing to inspect.
so it is possible for them to inspect it? thats all im asking, or is it gonna be a big job which = lots of cash.? the reason i ask is because its second hand and i have a warrentee on it, so if it looks buggered im gonna take it back and get the brand newey they have!
well if it's the box only then I'd assume it's cheap cos all they are doing is opening and inspecting. no idea how much but I'd guess <$200 ?

just did mine mate.
its not too hard. cost me under $200 to replace all the bearings/seals apart from the big ones on the diff which were in good condition
took me 5 hours to get the gearbox out and the casing off. just use longnose pliers on the circlip, easy.
btw, not all d-series gearboxs are the same, ratios and final drive are different
well ive already bought it so, if its wrong i have the warrentee to take it back! :DQuote:
