ok super noob question here. got an ek4 and today i redlined it cause i forgot to change the gears (super noob driver) and it made this cRUNGG sound in first.. just want to make sure that no immediate damage will be done to the car... opinions?

ur car has a factory limiter to prevent ur car from over-revving. no damage so long as u didnt hold it there for like 5 minutes
ok cool cheers
lol i remember when it first happened to me in my DC5R i shat myself lol
Researched it and yeah lol
how bad is it to redline if ur doing it for like a second?
^^^ Nothing will happen. As NSPYRE said the limiter would have cut fuel off to the engine.. However it may be a different case if say, you're traveling at 120km/h and you've accidentally shifted down to the 2nd gear (not sure how that would be possible!).
ok thanks, sorry to steal the thread for a bit shin2
mayb engine blows up? LOL or nothing will happen like GT? :P
from what i've seen on a friends RX-7 during a quarter mile run, he slammed it from red line in 3rd to 2nd cause he mis-shifted into 4th (still to this day do not know how he managed this) and all that happened was the rear wheels lock up until he realised wat had happened about 3 seconds later and put it back into 3rd.
after the run, we jacked her up, had a look and all was good from wat we cld see. got it back home and had it booked in to be inspected. no damage.

redlining is ok
misshifting is not
when u redline in third and slam it into 2nd or even first u burn out the clutch oil. my mate did it in his piece o' sh*** fiesta 89 model. and the oil just burnt and cloud os smoke all around us coming from the engine. but other than that the car still worked after that. lol its still driveable to this day. but yeah another mate of mine redlined his wrx for like 3 mins and blew his engine. fu***** retard i know but blew his engine redlining for TOO LONG.
yet another noob question i bought this ek4 like last week and the engine oil it came with was 10-60 i was just wondering if it would be better to use 10-40? cause i see a lot of people using it.
^^^ holy crap!! 10-60!! thats wayyy too thick man.. use something thinner like 10-30 or 10-40 if its clocking up a few km's
thanks for the tip ill change it next service lolol
i shifted an eb falcon from second gear about 90-100k an hour into first massive clunk and wheels locked no idea how it shifted into first i believe there is some mechanism to stop this unless ur almost stopped?
i've mis-shifted a few times in my integra but nuffin to major
Gearbox is much better my other car so still get used to it :D
in our work van we used to thrash the shit out of it...we used to do about 80km in 5th then slam it in to 2nd then 1st (red line like crazy) nothing bad happening just locked up the tyres (think its called pressure locking) or something?? but yea dont think anyone on ozhonda really wants to find out if it does it to there car too lol
I recently misshifted from sixth to second at ~95kph (was aiming for fourth for a quick overtake, but missed). It wasn't too bad since i'd rev matched for 4th (but got second) and second gear is good for ~100kph@7000rpm anyway, but still scared the crap out of me.
redlining on a cold start is a big NO NO
i think it may be due to the design of the rotary engine, like... if you mechanically over redlined a reciprocal engine something would blow, but since rotary engines just rotate in a circular motion... there's less chance something would blow if you were to over redline it
correct me if i'm wrong but thats what i think from my knowledge
damn, 3rd into 2nd.. i always though from 3rd to 4th gear is the easiest, straight motion downwards.. lucky nothing happened.. relining is ok, just not when its cold or holding there for too long. any excessive strain on the engine will shorten its lifespan though unless well maintained. cars usually stop making power before it hits reline anyway, so shifting 500rpm or so before it won't make much difference.
lol but what is that "CRUNG" Noise? lol never heard it before.
releasing clutch too soon before gear is in?
its called compression lock....when the wheels lock up when downshifting at high rpm
i dunno if this is true but i have been told that its really bad to rev honda engines past redline?
bad to spin any piston engine past redline
Bad to spin ANY engine past redline.
the right way is to do it so the gear fully engages before u release the clutch. if u find ur scratching ur gears then ur timing of ur footwork is all wrong and u need to work on it.
it shouldnt be that difficult to drive everyday without crunching ur gears....
it may not be your fault as a driver, ur synchromesh might be stuffed.
rev-matching should be learnt if you care about your car. its technically NOT the right way to shift down gears if you're going for your license, but it does reduce wear and tear on your drivetrain as well as making those down-shifts a million times smoother.
ok got that sorted haha
so whats ur opinion on changing gears with no clutch (perfect revs)
you have a clutch pedal, use it
end of story
unless it falls off, theres no reason to not use it
lol dude..
Ur joking right..
I've done it a few times in my laser ACCIDENTALLY and its not a pretty sound.
Ur car is designed to have a clutch for a reason, its not meant to be driven close to an auto..
U wanna **** ur car up, dont use ur clutch ;)
Sorry if what im saying is harsh but its true
So what about down shifting from like 4th to 3rd at say 80kph along with braking in order to slow down the car?
Is this bad? I do it pretty often and it's not quite a habit. I tend to down shift everytime I slow down to come to a stop according to the speed, but never anything crazy like 110kph on 3rd to 2nd.
double clutch > rev matching
You don't want a clutch!???..get a dog box!!
No synchros, pretty much flat shift it!
Neo_phase
I don't think its so bad dropping from 4th to 3rd @ 80kph as i fall victim of this when i don't react as fast as id like. But im sure if you've dropped into 3rd doing 80kph your revs would be up to around 4-5k or so?? which is pretty high in my opinion.
[Side note] Theres no problem in braking in 4th until your going 40kpm - No damage done in this instance.
...Even though heal-toe method is really only used for track, you can practice and learn this method of braking&accelerating @ the same time to rev match & to reduce wear and tear of your internals.
Took me a while to get the positioning of my foot right no jokes about 2 weeks but this really pays off when changing gears, in your circumstance from 4th to 3rd @ 80kph - You will not feel the car jerk forward.
You will use more of your brake pads though...
In hindsight - Brake pads cost less $$$ than a clutch.
Cheers mate.
This man knows, and now its my time to explain why.
When you rev match all you're doing is increasing the engine speed, this means your synros still need to speed up your gearbox internals to the relivant engine speed.
By double clutching (clutch in, neutral, clutch out, rev, clutch in, gear, clutch out)
You are not only raising the engine speed but also the gears inside increase in speed which furthermore reduces wear on the syncros.
Alot of people say it's easier/faster to just rev match but I can double clutch just as fast as most people rev matching.
It's all in the timing.
yeh you can change gears without using the the clutch.
done exactly how IZY-10 said.
:).
I can even get a vid to prove it
agree with this guy
but dude, just as fast as rev matching? wat are u? professional rally driver? lol. i double clutch wen i have the time to - by that i mean for street. but trying to do that while ur at the track going hard? if u can do that without getting tired and consistently do it faster as opposed to ppl who just rev match then props to u
Thats why I said most, if you can do it smoothly that fast
But what I notice is people rush then over rev the match because they put it in gear too early.
I can do it fairly fast tho, when the car is at low enough speed and rev (road and engine noise) you can hear the clutch pedal thump agaisnt the floor quiet fast.
I do it while spirited driving aswell as daily.
I can't even see myself regular rev matching anymore tbh, once you start double clutching it becomes a second nature.
Another thing is helps is when your syncros are ****ed, my brother owns a 400hp 180 so the syncros are generally going from hard shifting, double clutch down shifts (wah`la!) no more crunch.
