F1 moving to 4cyl turbo engines?

nothing set in stone atm, but i have been reading for more than just one place about a possible move to 4cyl turbo f1 cars by about 2013.

i don't know if i like the idea or not... f1 is meant to be the pinnacle of motorsport.
i didnt like it when they moved to v8's from v10's, but it looks like everyone wants to be ecofriendly these days...

any thoughts?

edit: btw, the picture from the article is actually of the Brabham-BMW BT52 4cyl turbo motor from the 1983 f1. apparently it was capable of 1400hp.

id rather they go back to the 2004 v10 powerhouses

theyve had turbos before but 4cyl turbos in f1 just doesnt seem right..

I loved the clean lines of the 2004 cars... I think they will be the fasted cars of their decade... (2005 saw aero changes and 2006 saw engines changes)

One car I like however after 2004 is the BMW 2008 car... That thing was known on F1 forums as "The Predator"....

The turbo era was one of the greatest in the sports history... Personally, I'd love to see turbocharged engines in Formula One. In the mid 80's, Benetton's BMW engines pumpied out 1500hp in Qualifying trim.. Omg.

4 cyl turbo will be better for everyone, better for the technology to filter down to the production line!

Turbos might have the performance but it certainly won't have the same piercing high RPM sounds.

I read WRC going down to 1.6 engines, so not supprise if F1 drops its engine and goes back to turbocharged

Even with turbos, the FIA might limit the allowed boost pressure.

are you trying to say everyone going to use the same turbo ? that would make it way more interesting but.

wouldnt they just have a power limit not a boost pressure limit lol~

Not sure if it was F1 but i remember watching this thing where they had an ear piece to listen to the turbo, because if they go over a certain boost, it would release the pressure as a limiter

Omg this sound awesome lol.... I reckon it'd be so much more interesting hearing these bad boys spoolin up and shit.

If you are inspecting an F1 car on Friday before practice session, how are you going to check that it adheres to the power limit? Are you going to put each one of the cars on the dyno? It is better to do it as a pressure limit as they can use a standadised pressure release valve that is supplied to the teams by a controlled manufacturer. All of the teams will then work to get max power out of that boost pressure limit. It is the same as now with the NA V8. They don't limit power, instead they limit the RPM because it is easier to measure.

Don't worry about the td05 16g vs t871r issue, because every team is going to buy the t871r equivalent, if that is going to be one that produces the best power output. They are F1 teams, not poor like us Honda drivers. :p

Dont worry mate, just think of High RPMs and boost........

I'm not to surprised at this. It just goes in circles. Turbo - N/A - Turbo. As for reliability, how reliable are 19000 rpms they got now. The have the budgets to buy the best of the best.

no one can say they thought the 2009 F1 cars looked better then the 2008 cars.. wider front nose and thinner rear spoiler.. not a good look

i've actually heard that they want to make the sport more environmentally friendly and use fuel similar to the E85 used in V8 supercars... so a small engine with a turbo might be needed...

i read that the F1 drivers said that the V8 sounds are getting stale and are welcoming the change to 4cyl twin turbos.

but man 2013 gonna be the biggest change we are ever gonna see. and expecting over 22 races in a season.

1,300 to 1,500HP from a 4 banger is pretty bad ass.

Go read about the BMW M12, that produced 1,300hp from a 1.5L 4 cylinder in the mid 1980s

Drew is correct, in qualifying trim the late 80's BMW engines delivered 1,300 HP!! It may seem like a demented number, but consider that those engines ran on toluene, not petrol..

A word of warning before you all want to run out and buy toluene injection.. It's a carcinogen and causes brain damage when inhaled..

Reliability was the key though.. Honda (engines) owned the late 80's F1 scene.. Not quite as much power, but less of a hand-grenade also.. McLaren + Honda + Senna = the glory days!!

Lol i dont know about everyone else but i reckon i'd love hearing the 4cyl turbos n seeing what they do with them i think it'd be epic!

scrap the 4 cyd idea and bring back the v10's!!!!

I'll laugh my head off if they do this and then everybody stops bagging us Honda enthusiasts and drops their V8 for a turbo'd 4-banger because they realise how awesome it can be.

For me personally I'm not as fussed with the engineering rules of F1. I love the competition and especially enjoyed the recent success of Red Bull Racing's dynamic duo but as long as the cars are fast and the races entertaining then I don't mind :)

Porsche are saying it will happen in 2013 and if it does happen they are going to move in as an engine provider... so it looks like F1 bosses are actually considering the move to a smaller turbo engine...
