EG vs EK for track

Hey guys ive done a search for this but couldnt really find what i was looking for so ill ask it here.

I'm looking at starting a track car build but I'm torn between an EG and an EK. Is asking which one is better a stupid question or are there legitimate arguments? How important a part does the weight of an EG vs EK play? Also in terms of aftermarket support which one would be better? So like suspension parts n all the fun things that are used to build a track car. Admin if you think this belongs in the noob section please move it i just thought it would be better to ask here where alot of members have actually had track experience.

It all comes down to which shape you like, both can be made into competitive platforms.

The Ek is newer and probably has better supported parts than the EG.
But I think the EG looks better..LOL..

So really..it doesn't really matter...

im doing a track ek atm.. check my thread. IMO both are the same really just depends wat price you pick the car up for and asthetics. Eg's are generally cheaper and if you building a track car, your going to be throwing most of the stuff thats inside it anyway. In regards to sussy, depending on your budget most people opt to change their sussy in an ek or eg to dc2r sussy anyway. (e.g. dc2r sway bars, lca's, coilovers and even brake set up too...). i think an eg may be a little lighter, but i weighted in at around the 900 kg mark (honda ek1 fully stripped with d16y4).

Wow thats not bad thinks for that Filo. Next question would be would an Integra also be a competitor? I can get a gsi for dirt cheap because i was gonna do a motor swap regardless of what i bought so i figure ill keep my options open.

eg is lighter and something i read in asm once was that the wheels are placed as close to the corners on the car as possible sort of like a go kart so i'd say eg :) but im biased

See the problem with EGs are they are bloody hard to find any good ones in good condition whereas EKs are abundant. With the EGs as well most of them are carby so a carby to efi conversion is gonna be needed not to mention the age of the car as well it has to be a daily for a few months before the fun starts

it is a track car, condition is not really a factor?

yeah but it has to be a daily driver for a few months and will probably still be a daily driver for a while after i start tracking it so it needs to at least be rust free

then you are not actually building a 'track car' are you?

Well no ok then sorry i didnt completely specify that im just getting a few ideas n thought i'd start somewhere it will eventually be a full track car but atm it has to be a daily driver till i get it finished to where i want it

Track car ONLY or road registered?
Being road registered there limits to what you can do.

And bare in mind if its a track car, it can't always be mint, unless you got deep pockets.

both the same, just find any that has no mechanical faults to use as daily. Once its a track car condition of body, looks, electronics all wont really matter.

Yeah i agree with that simon but for the time being itll be a road registered daily/weekend warrior till i can get enough funds to turn it into a full track car so then none of that still will matter to me its just for the interim.

haha i was thinking about using an EM1 or EJ6 as a base to start off with but cant find any for 4grand lol which doesnt surprise me.

ive always wanted to do a teg. i think theyre awesome! out of those 3, theyre preety much the same. go with what you like in the looks. a k20 in either a eg ek or dc2 will all pritty much preform the same.
if u ever get the ek dont be afraid to shoot me questions if needed

Yeah I'd like to do an EK because thats my favourite shape n thats the shape i love the most so ill go with an ek. However i dont think im going down the K route because itll be alot cheaper for me to boost it. That being said the inherent problems with boosting it might be a problem too but ill worry about that when i get there

Huh? I only have 4grand to spend atm so im only getting the EK shell and then going from there. dc2r would cost me at least 14grand

EK FTW - good to see a boosted track car! mine started out as a daily - i found doing your sussy work first will let u have the most fun on the road. thats me anyway.

Yeah I was gonna do suspension first then save up money then depending on what happens after i finish my traineeship ill either go boosted b18 or k20, either way at the end of it there will be a turbo involved lol. Thanks for all your responses Filo really appreciate it man

Lol i can imagine that would be a fun time however i think K20 is a little out of my price range at this point in time so i'll have to make due with a turbo b18c sir motor :P

I would say the eg would be easier and cheaper to modify, because you can get a lot of second hand dc2r parts on the cheap that will bolt straight on. But if you really prefered the ek then it would be spending a little extra. No point spending a heap of money on a car and not being happy with it.

Haha you know it Roy. Thanks Filo i might just do that man ill have a look at what you're running in a sec and tell ya because ill definitely be doing the suspension n stuff first because im still a p plater i cant drive with boost till next year June :P

I think the EK has a better chassis, much stiffer.

Half you guys completely overlooked this point with the cars. What's bolting DC2R parts on good for?

DC2 would be a good choice too, it will split the weight a little better and attract better aerodynamics due to the design of the rear.

I'll be honest sometimes I do regret that it's a full blown track car coz sometimes I wish I could take it to a meet or go for a cruise coz I had a pretty sweet street car, it was clean and had everything you'd want in a weekend warrior. So make sure you know what you want. Because once you go as far as I do you can't go back. Any tracks out here hervey bay???

Yeah man im trying to keep it within the bounds of street legal for the time being because i love cruising around haha and nah they're currently discussing it with the local councils n stuff but apart from that we have to go to brisbane for any track/drag related activities :(

Dont worry man I'm not however i did attend one of the meetings they had and the council have approved it however they're just talking about the finer details as well as financial issues before it gets underway, so within the next 4 years it might get started :P

I would say any residential or planned residential estates within a 30km radius would end up in a no go for a track in SEQ. Developers have too much sway IMO.

Still have no idea how Tetley managed to get Lakeside back online, no doubt tooth and nail tenacity about bringing grassroots motorsport to the masses.

Sorry but this sounds like 95% of Ozhondas fresh EG or EK owners on here....starts out with a " track respect " dream but ends up in fake front lip , fake filo rims and multi-coloured lug nuts.

Just to keep this on topic , EG vs EK id chose EG purely for base price and parts seclection. Just that touch more around and cheaper than EK equvilivent.

I know exactly where you're coming from Bennjamin and i agree completely, im not a fresh owner ive had 2 civics, but im in debt and want to start fresh, i would rather rock an oem lip than a fake one man and the rims i want are the 6UL ones so you wont see fake filo rims on my car either :P I hate fake shit i'd rather save up n pay good money for the real deal, keep the decent manufacturers in business! And yeah I've found an eg i want however i need to sell my EK first.

Dont worry Benson between you and Flick I've got all the inspiration i ever wanted! You're another reason why i want a track eg/car haha, as far as im concerned your EG has the toughest looking shell on ozhonda!

I would choose an EK because it is newer and less things will break, I prefer to drive my car rather than fix it. Get the car in the best mechanical condition possible, don't fall into the trap of thinking "I am going to mod it anyway" because replacing stuff costs time and money.

Choose the shape you like best.
EK is 20kg's heavier but has a bit more rear weight bias so in my opinion is a slightly better platform.
Remember this though.....
Streetcars make crap racecars................. and racecars make crap streetcars.

I do agree with that however im sure there could be a medium somewhere along the lines, as I live 4 hours away from the nearest track i wont be there every weekend. My next question would be motor options. K20 would be out of the question for me as i dont have 10grand MINIMUM for a k swap, i can pick up an H22 Eg where i live for 5 grand however i've been told H22egs dont make good track cars because of the different weight distribution? Mind you thats just people talking, alot of them have never been on a track before so i figured I'd ask the pros :P

Stock engine until you can carry momentum properly. You could easily spend 5 grand on the chassis (brakes, tyres, bushings, shocks, etc...). If you genuinely want to go fast, you'll probably want to spend the minimum you can getting the car prepped, then as much as you can on driving the damn thing. How many track days could you attend if you sacrificed a $5000 engine swap? You need a good chassis but only a reliable engine.

EG for sure (in my opinion being biased!).

Look at Yonas, Benson, Flick, DRHONDA. All EG's, and I'm sure there's a reason?!..lightness?..ease of sourcing parts?..interchangeable parts?..cheap to acquire a decent chassis?..

Thanks String thats what i was thinking about doing actually cause my mate has a d16 vtec motor lying around i was thinking about just doing the cheap swap for the time being and focusing on suspension and all that jazz first and worrying about the motor swap later however i can get an h22 eg here where i live for 5 grand

So you're after a daily that you can blast around tracks on weekends?

Get what appeals to you most from a daily perspective is my advice, drive the car as it is and mod according to what deficiencies you are experiencing when kicking it in the guts around the circuit.

Forget about power for the time being.

Definitely suspension mods, swaybar, quality brake pads, quality brake fluids and quality tires.

Geez i never thought i'd get so much constructive feedback! Thanks to everyone here for giving me such good feedback i really really appreciate it! And yeah suspension will definitely be the first thing i do because i'd rather have a d series daily that handles very well compared to a stock Ek with a b18 or something in it.

Sound like you should just save up your money and buy a type r..

unless u are going all out... i reckon u would have to spent more money than just the difference to be simply on par with an R.. just my opinion

Yeah but they arent fake rims and you see alot of track cars using them so they cant be terrible rims either!

the only track cars u see using them are MX5 and now civics.

IMO 6ul's are by far the best 15 inch rim for circuit. Proven 1 sec faster over any other 15 inch rim. Just our little secret.

Have to agree with the 6ul rims. One of the best 15inch rims to use both on the streets and circuit. Pricing is heaps good as well! They balance out very well at the tyre shop

Yeah i thought so i want a set so badly they look so good too! havent decided what tyres i want to use though

If you want the Track/hardcore look...then slap on some Toyo r888's. Mind you they will probaly cost you more then the rims itself.

T1R isn't in the same league as R1R. The more R's the better, yo!

an EK can satisfy any of the above...the reason is either they like the shape or it was cheap, or a combination. The EG is not better than the EK..

No i agree with you i love the EG shape, now if only my damn car would sell i could start my project!
