Need an Opinion on Coilover sleeves

I know there has been heaps and heaps of sussy talk no this forum but it can be hard to find exactly what your after so hear goes.

I'm looking to get a set of skunk 2 sports shocks (from JDM yard) and i want to know the best coilover sleeves to get with them. it's for my daily, but i want to be able to adjust the ride height, and i don't want to risk getting springs and being unhappy with them when they sag. And i'll be honest i don't have the cash for a full coilover kit nor do i think i need it. looking for comfortable and fairly low

would really appreciate some help because tbh i'm sick of looking at my ek and wondering whether its a 4wd or not :p

Some reputable brands I know are Omni and Ground Control (you can do your research on prices). In the end I reckon these will cost you around the $1k margin (depending on your sources). Fork out a bit more and you can have a brand new set of coilovers.

i just had a quick look at some tein super street coilovers, they're pretty good for street use aren't they? i had it in my head that they were way out of my price range but maybe they aren't
Would they be better for what i want than a shock+coil sleeve combo?

There are way too many choices for this, i cant even decide on a chocolate bar when i go to the supermarket let alone choose what suspension i want lol

would that be all i would need to replace my stock suspension and also lower the car? or would i need some other sort of mounting or bushes so it fitted and worked correctly

IMO for street use buy the Skunk2 Pro S.

I use the Pro S on my EG sedan rears and at the front I have Fulcrum coils with 10kg Vision springs. Goes well :)

i was trying to keep within $1000 but it depends on what i'm looking at. if i can justify it i might spend more. i think i've done well to get away from bying just King springs on stock shocks lol which was what the guy at Autobarn said to do, then i joined this forum and realized there are many better options.

dougie_504: i looked up those coilovers and found a lot of people complaining about them being to hard, yours are in the back so wouldn't affect you as much but if i had them all round from what i've read they would be to stiff for what i'm after. thanks for your help anyway mate

look around for 2nd hand tein super street, not too stiff, pretty comfy for street use ;)

how much would a new set of those set me back?

They're 6kg at the back. OEM is something like 4kg? So you might have trouble if you want something stiffer than stock but not too stiff as I don't believe anybody makes a 5kg spring rate.

My fronts are 10kg Vision springs. I feel the 'stiffness' a lot more at the back than the front when I hit bumps or take corners.

oh ok i see what you mean. maybe i should go with them lol i really don't know what to do. I still think i'd rather a shock + spring/coil sleeve kit. no offense to you or anything, i just don't want to go to far with this, it's mainly to adjust the height and be comfortable. i'm not really after anything overly race orientated if you get what i mean.

Sure I understand what you mean mate! That's why I bought my coilovers! I wanted something to adjust the height and still be comfortable, but after a while I made them stiffer because it's more fun lol.

If you get some coilovers you know you're getting good quality items.

Buying brand new shocks, putting sleeves on them and then putting on springs is fine, but it's a bit of hassle and for me (I'm no expert) I don't know how reliable their quality will be. And with suspension you want to be sure you're getting something worth it's salt because it's essential for the safety and performance of your car.

A coilover is essentially a shock/spring combo sold as a single item by a company, there's not all that much difference except that they might be height/damper adjustable.

you should seriously consider becoming a salesperson mate! haha i'll check if the pro s coils are also damper adjustable because i guess that would be a major benifit to me if i want a comfy ride, i could just make them less stiff. i get what you mean too mna, i suppose buying a combination of brands won't be as reliable as getting the same brand in one unit. i'll see how much i can get the pro s coils for and decide from there. thanks a lot for your help mate, much appreciated :)

doesn't look like they are damper adjustable but that's ok. do you know if these are legal in Aus? i'm doing my best to stay as legal as possible lol don't really want to get defected.

Nah they're not damper bro. Skunk2 offers the Pro C coilovers with damper adjustable settings.

To be honest I don't think you'd get a RWC with either, they'll be too stiff IMO.

do you happen to know if king springs will fit on the skunk2 sport shocks? or any other springs? and whether they'll be legal/RWC or not? sorry about all my questions but i just want to be sure about what i get and whether it's the right thing for me :D your replys are very helpfull btw

You serious? Alot of the cheaper coilovers out there are rubbish and will start knocking/leaking with enough abuse. And if you blow one, you need to buy a whole new set. The advantage in coilover sleeves are you can choose a good quality shock like koni or agx with dampener control. If a shock happens to fail, take it out, take the sleeve off and replace that shock.

Wrong.

Kings spring will fit the Skunk2 Sports shock

These shocks are just OEM replacement shocks. I recommend getting Kmacs springs as they're made to order with custom spring rate and height. Or reputable brands such as Eibach and such :)

PS: if you can stretch your budget to around $1250-$1300 you can get yourself a BC coilovers. Best bang for bucks coilovers.

If you read the entire thread properly you'd see I'm advocating for the Skunk2 Pro S, which is not a cheap/sh!t coilover.

Plenty, if not most coilovers, are in fact rebuildable.


You need to consider the previous discussion so that you don't make poor assumptions on a single sentence just because I didn't draw you a picture to go with it so that you understand it properly.

And your claims re: king springs not fitting on the OP's desired Skunk2 OEM replacement shocks just further support my point that you haven't read this thread properly.

settle down guys lol Dougie is right though mate, he wasn't trying to push some shit parts onto me lol just trying to find the best stuff for my budget. It's ok now anyway i've decided to get the skunk2 sports shocks with Eibach springs from JDM Yard. Thanks for all the help Dougie, made my decision much easier

btw went into Pedders yesterday just to see what they would suggest for me and he told me $1860 for pedders shocks, springs, fitting and allignment lol thank god for the forum traders :D

Pedders are considered by a lot of people on this forum to be quite poor quality. My mechanic agrees and I've used them myself and wasn't overly impressed either. That price is also a downright ripoff.

Sport shocks with Eibach springs, good combo mate, good quality parts. Show us pictures and tell us how they feel :)

y not ho bc or ksport coilovers there reasonably cheap

i'm still not that keen on coilovers bro, and i'm only looking for a small drop (1.5 - 2 inches). The reason i wanted adjustable suspension at first was in case my springs saged and went to low, but i'm getting Eibach springs which are highly regarded for thier performance and long gevity so it seems like the right option for me :) thanks anyway mate but my minds made up

you say your budget is $1000? your best to get decent second hand coilovers or even brand new ones and save like 200 bucks and youll be sweet. but if you go springs your best to get new shocks too.
