'99 Civic Sedan - sound system build up

I reckon it's time to start this thread, maybe it'll be useful for some of you, or just for fun...
Car is a stock '99 Civic Sedan GLI, it's my son's 1st car. We (parents) paid for the car, he's paying for the sound system.
Here's the plan:
- Front doors and boot are getting sound deadening treatment
- Power cable (2ga/35sqmm) will be run straight from the battery
- MDF/fiberglass sub enclosure in the boot, to receive a 12'' Rainbow Hammer sub
- enclosure/housing for Hifonics Zeus zxi 4.150 RMS amp
- Front doors are getting MDF/fibreglass doorboards to receive 2x Polk Audio 6501 6.5'' woofers per door
- A-pillars are going to hold the tweeters, either in a fibreglass, or something else... will see...
- Battery needs to be replaced, thinking of Optima Yellow Top, but we're open to your suggestions...
- A power cap is going to support the power supply to the amp - nothing fancy, but shall do the job...
- HU is the Alpine 117E, it's got what we need for starters :)
- ... there is probably more, but I can't remember now...

I'll start with some photos, and will update as often as possible.

Today we had some trouble sorting out the box around that stupid boot lid hinge - ended up cutting the shape two more times 'till we got it to fit without the need to work around the hinge. It's gonna be nice! :P.
Also I have some dramas trying to sort out the aeroport - wanted to use 100mm pipe, but it might be a problem to fit it in properly, so we're going to use 76mm pipe - that's what's recomended by the sub manufacturer anyway, so it should be fine.
Tomorrow going to Motorvation in Kwinana, maybe steal some ideas ;)

That was no good at all, obviously mixed up datum, there was nothin' on Sunday :(. Made about 130k's for nothing, and that in my other son's FTO, with 3 teenies inside listening to boom-boom music :(...
At least I was driving and the new exhaust he put in made a nice difference to the old girl...

Here's some update on our work:
so far we sorted out the aeroport for the sub (that was PITA), fixed both rings in position, stretched and fixed the cloth and yesterday were able to put a first coat of resin over it. It took ages to dry because of the cold and humid weather :thumbdwn:. Hope to put at least 2-3 layers of fiberglass over it today after work. Also cleaned up the mess from cutting MDF and put more sound deadening in the boot... So far we're pretty happy with the progress, it could go a bit faster neverthelles...

pipe is an air port (not airport ;) ). It's used to tune the box to a specific frequency. You have probably seen boxes like that in shops or elsewhere. Some have a pipe, some have a slot, or even a triangle. Shape doesn't really matter, but the square surface and the length of the port must be calculated properly, otherwise the sub would sound wrong - like either producing no deep bass, or just rumbling... There are also sealed boxes (no pipe at all), and bandpass boxes, which consist of one sealed box and one ported. Some manufacturers make one wall on these boxes out of see-through acrylic, so you can see the subwoofer inside.
Btw., which type of box we make/use depends on the subwoofer specs, one can't just decide to use this or that type... There's so much to the topic, of which I have not so much knowledge, but I'm sure if you become interested, there are tons of other forums on the net, with ppl who know their stuff...

Nothing with 2-3 layers of fiberglass per day.... took me good 3 hours to put like 1.5 layers today... maybe tomorrow will go a bit faster... the only thing I'm not sure of is: how do I know how many layers are on what section? It all looks the same... :o

If you ask me, I'd say no (to Fusion at least). You could check Repco, there you could hear their ProLonear active subs, they're also not my style but at least should be better than Fusion... and yes, if you get one, it needs power straight from battery, since all other cables in the car are way too thin for powering up any amp, even such a small one...

meanwhile the trunk is totally isolated from the cabin so putting a sub in the trunk is pretty useless fml...
i m not looking those bass that would turn ppl's head but at least i want sth better than wt a 6" coaxial could do lol

I just did a little research on del Sol with Gooogle... The only thing interesting I found was this. I've never seen that car's inside but it looks like there is not really much space in the cabin :(. It would be a very interesting project/challenge to pimp your car with a proper sound system. Do you have ANY space behind the seats? Or under the seats? Or maybe the passenger leg room? Or what about glove box space? Those are all possibilities where to stick a sub. These days there are lot of flat subwoofers that don't need much space, like the Pioneer 10''.
With fiberglass, effort and imagination it would be a breeze to make something out of it!

I think with a del sol there is enough room for a small amp (mono/ bridged 2ch) under or behind each seats, as well as room for a flat sub (they really dont need much room/ litreage for the box) plus those flat subs wont require massive power and hence massive sized amp to get them going. If you look on caraudioasutralia.com there are a few MR2's/ convertibles who have put subwoofers into their cabin.

Wixxer I'm really enjoying the progress and work put into this set up and the great selection of quality of gear as well!! With the fibreglassing, you mentioned knowing how many layers you have done in which area? Maybe if you leat each layer dry before applying the next (would take ages or even before you start putting new layers down the next day) you could give it a quick once over with a paint can so for e.g today I did 2 layers (thats blue) the next day you only have time for 1 (so you paint it red (then you can see if you you have parts with 3 layers or 2 etc) if you know what I mean.. for some reason I think I've made that sound complicated.. hmmm haha

Thanks capita, sounds like a good idea with paint :). Now that I'm a "bit more into it" (since this is my first project with fiberglass) and I learned how much resin can I mix and use without having it harden in a can (300ml), I realised I can do half a surfice with one mix. So I'm doing bottom half first, then mix again and do the top half. So far I've got about four layers on, but it still needs 2-3 more I reckon. It's already pretty hard and stiff, but not enough... Hopefully this weekend I can start sanding and filling it...

alright, a little update, but no pics tonite, it's not so interesting anyway... finished fibreglassing on the front of the sub enclosure, got at least 6 layers everywhere. It's still drying atm, but I think it's going to be anough. Tommorow filling the low areas and around the openings, then maybe anotherlayer ober it, maybe not, will see... afterwards it's gonna be measuring the volume and fibreglassing the rear (through sub opening), that's gonna be fun...
Shame there is not more response to this thread, maybe not interesting enough? :( Well, for the few of you guys watching it, I'll keep up posting the progress...:)

Anywya i'm looking for some bass punch - should i get a proper amp or just a monoblock? What sort of power ratings should i be looking at?

or could my 6x9's be underpowered? (they do pack quite a bit of bass if i ahve the volume high, but the treble kills my ears to get that bass)

It would be awesome if you tell us what HU and what speakers you've got. Are the front coaxes or compos? (I reckon they're coaxes, otherwise you'd mention it). Also, what car does it go in? How much space do you want to sacrifice? All that sort of stuff...
Whatever they are, they're almost certainly underpowered, as ANY HU produces 4x15Watt RMS at most. And yes, forget about 4x50 what you read on the package, that's max peak power, has nothing to do with "real world", sorry.
So, imho you should get yourself a sub and an amp to match. Amp should be a 4 channel. Channels 1+2 will power up your front speakers, channels 3+4 will in bridged mode power up your sub. Most amps will in bridged mode accept only 4 ohm load, so your sub should be a 4 ohm sub. Dont worry if amp produces "too much power (RMS)" for the given sub, thats better then having not enough power fed to it.
As for your rear 6x9's, best thing is to sell them on ebay or alike, and invest the money in the amp and sub. But if you have to have them, they can run off the HU, but set them up not too loud. Remember, you want to hear music in front of you, not behind you!
Another VERY important thing if you want to have a half way good sound is SOUND DEADENING at least your doors and your boot!!!!! This can't be repeated too often, as it's CRUCIAL for a good sound in your car!!!!! Remember also this: All the music you hear when standing next to your car, IS MISSING INSIDE!!!

yep, that's it, the "shiny stuff". Any car hifi store like alberts have them, but they mostly sell "Dynamat". That is the probably best stuff on oz market, but it's pretty dear. I've got mine off ebay, bit less efficient than dynamat, but lot cheaper... and it does work! And, if you have leftovers, you can always stick a second layer on it!

Wow, good post! That's what i gathered anyway - i'm well aware of that 4x50W being peak power and not RMS.

My HU is an alpine CDA 9813 (i think), producing your favourite 4x50w :P Not entirely sure about what all the speakers are actually, but my rears are some boschmann things that i can't figure out, and i have no idea about the fronts.. or the front tweeters either.

What sort of sub power should i be looking at? I don't necessarily want to be creating earthquakes, but have a decent amount of it shuold i want to entertain.. And if the amp has too much power won't it blow the sub?

That HU is sweet! Not the newest one ;) but still, it's got the full package in it. And it needs an extra power (wire) straight off the battery for it's full potential (read here)
Never listened to your Boschmann's, can't say anything about them...

Any good brand sub will do imho. These days you can't even buy a sub with less then 200W RMS (can you?, others please correct me if I'm wrong). And that will do the job for you. You can feed it with 300-400W RMS, should be fine (again others correct me if i'm wrong) as long as you don't push it to the max ALL THE TIME. I've had quite a couple of subs running 'em that way for years, never had any dramas. Problems mostly start if you don't give your sub enough power - if your amp is TOO weak, it will always be running on the edge, not being able to produce enough "clean", distortion free power. Result: amp will overheat, and your sond will be c.r.a.p. before stopping completely.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not sayin' that a 200W sub can/should be given 1000W, but in my opinion 50-100% more than rated will definitely work better then 50-100% less then rated.

Your install is looking pretty clean. I just finished my sound system on my EK Hatch.
I went for a 250rms MTX sub, JVC 6" and 6x9" speakers. I have mounted a Response AA-0425 and a Kicker zx300.1 underneath the front seats.
Will the sub be easily removable? Where abouts is the amp going?

It looks like yours will sound pretty good when it is done!

Amp will go in spare wheel space, in order to maintain a little bit of the boot space, but still to give a bit of a "show off" effect, as required by a 17yo teenie ;)
Details will come later, when we come to it, it shall be "amazing", as my son likes to put it :)
Not sure about sub, weather it will be easy to remove, but I don't think so, because it will be enclosed with other soverings all around...

Last night I hit the wall!
After being too lazy to do more sanding and filling, I thouhgt it would be good to measure (roughly) the volume of the box, so I get the idea of how to finish the back side - I left it open on purpose, so I can take away a bit of volume if the box is a lil too big...
So here we go:

Got all I need: cardboard box (I had to empty the beer carton to get the box ;) ), measuring cup, tape, calculator, paper and pen, and of course the good old bean bag, with styrofoam pellets (wifey started wingeing about the mess I was gonna create...oh my)

Started removing the styroballs out of the enclosure and into the carton box, and later into the measuring cup. Here's what I got:
3x full carton box + 3.8 litres in measuring cups.
Calculation:
1 carton box contains 24 beer stubbies @ 345ml each - makes 8.28 litres per carton. 3x carton + measuring cup make together 28.64 litres net volume... way too small, but with some polyfill it should be ok, as I'm AIMING SOMEWHERE AROUND 45 LITRES NET!
...NO GOOD AT ALL!!!
Ok, that was a joke, but let's measure it properly:
Carton is HxWxL= 380*255*225mm = 21.8 litres
3x21.8=65.4 litres
65.4+3.8= 69.2 litres net volume :eek::eek:

Here's my dilemma: What can I do, what's the best thing to do?
Sub and 4'' port have a displacement of app. 7.4 litres. That is if I decide to go from 3'' to 4'' pipe.
That way I still have about 17 litres volume too much! Any ideas? Fill it with sand bags, make walls thicker...???

thats a huge box mate! To cut down some litres maybe you could cut the box and remove whats right of the port? That should help.. if it doesnt cut enough (litrage), or its not an option.. alot of sound deadening in the inside of the box or dacron? Also I just thught of adding layers of MDF to the base of the box?

Sorry, my HU's a CDA 9811, not 9813 :( Does that make any difference?

That box seems pretty massive for what you are trying to achieve, I would imagine it would sound undefined, but loud.

These two days I didn't do much on the box itself, but I played with WinISD for quite some time. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure how does a good curve look like, or what's the real world behaviour of the sub when the curve says that it will be overall louther then "another" box/port combo, but it has a big peak at, say, 45Hz. (+6dB), compared with -3dB at 30Hz an 89Hz.
@ UkuleleGod: mate, is it too much to ask you to run my sub through WinISD and see what you can come up with? Would appreciate it much. Or someone else please?

The curve you are looking for all depends on whether you want a SPL or a SQL system. But the best way to figure out what your sub needs is to check out the specs from the manufacturer (which I would also need to check out a winISD). Easiest way out would be just to try and get as close to what the manufacturer wants. You also should remember, that some frequencies will also be reinforced by the interior environment the sub is in.

You could possibly decrease the volume of the enclosure by using a closed cell foam (this type of foam decreases volume, where as "open cell foam" has the potential to increase volume).

Hope that Helps, it is a clean looking setup you are going for, kinda guilts me into making a custom enclosure for my sub instead of just using the tuned MTX one :P

so much dead weight - that poor civics power to weight ratio just went out the window - not to mention the extra weight over the back wheels
i would be uprating the swaybar, tie brace and trailing arm bushes lol

otherwise - some nice DiY work there - respect for the hard yards

Thanks for your tips mate, much appreciated. I thought the best thing would be to pass you the specs, and if you're happy to check it out in WinISD that would be great!!!
I was thinking (also after playing with WinISD that the 3'' port might get too noisy, so will opt for 4''. 5'' would be awesome, but I'm not sure if I can easy find a 5'' pipe, and secondly If I can bend it to fit in the enclosure. Bigger pipe would also take up much more space inside the enclosure, giving me "less work" to decrease the remaining volume ;).
Question: Does it matter if the port has quite a few bends (to suit the enclosure), as long as I can keep the diameter constant and it's all smooth inside? Is it too bad if I can't keep 1x port diameter distance from enclosure walls?

Anyway, last night did a bit more sanding, gotta go to Supacheap and get some fine filler, there are quite some low points there...

dead weight as in - it slows the car down haha
but in the case of slowing down your son i think its a fantastic idea haha

the power of DiY is epic win

Just ran your sub through ISD and got pretty similar to what you got. Your enclosure is (as you said) about 17 liters bigger than it really needs to be, too much bigger and you will end up with a higher SPL. You could even out the size, by filling the enclosure (temporarily with something like plastic bags full of sand or with some closed cell foam) and see how it sounds? If it sounds boomy, possibly lengthening the port could help. The longer port will lower the resonant frequency.

I don't think there should be that much of effect if the port is bent, as long as the diameter is constant and smooth. I have seen enclosures where the port has been as close as 1/2 the diameter from the enclosure walls so that should be fine too.

Question is because somewhere I read that one should measure "the shortest way of air" which would not be the centre, but rather "from one corner to the opposite, and so on to the next one". It doesn't sound logical to me, I reckon my way is correct.

One this one, I am not too sure. I would imagine just down through the centre, either way, there will only be a few centimeters difference.

A little update on my work:

Finished filling and sanding for the most of it, I reckon it's more then enough for covering it with suede or anything alike. Only if we decide to spray paint it, more sanding will be required:

After giving it a guide coat of black spray paint and sanding to find the high and low spots (still lot to do)

After I definitely decided to go with 4'' port instead of 3'', my son cut out a bigger port hole, to allow for the 4'' pipe.

Of course, it means that we'll have to make new port flare, so I started making a new mold for it, as the simple one I used for the 3'' pipe won't work on 4''. It's still work in process but here are some pics of what I did so far:
Cut 5 rings. Top three will help hold the pipe upright, 4th helps save some filler, and the last one will serve as a turntable. Should work, I hope.

Forming the flare mold I realized that a beer bottle diameter has the perfect shape for the flare ;), so it helped me to form the filler. Still need to sand it smoooof, but here it is:

The craftsmanship on that enclosure is excellent. Good to see you have finished with the designing parts of the enclosure. When your son gets his P plates, he is sure going to have one of the best executed sound systems of his friends (most cars on the road). You should both come along to some meets!

You're probably right about the "best sound systems among his friends' cars", but not because I do a great job (which I consider is only average, as it's full of "try and error" mistakes), but more because most of his friends don't even understand the importance of sound deadening in a car :thumbdwn:.
But on the other hand, most of his friends come from pretty wealthy houses, so if one of them goes for a full professional install... well, then we'll have to do more improvements to beat them, right?!!!
I really do hope that once this is finished, we'll go to some meets and see how we go among real enthusiasts and learn from them! I'm also not sure if I'm gonna be able to adjust all the settings to achieve the best possible sound, but I hope that my laptop, software "Praxis" and my brand new measuring mic will do the trick once I find out how to work it...

Since I'm doing most of things twice, so I did the rings, maybe you can notice the outer rings missing. That's because I decided to glass most of the door pods from the inside, 3 layers will be enough. Only the section where I'll be glassing over the factory plastic will be glassed both inside and outside, with lots of holes drilled through, to "enclose" plastic with glass.

again - im not into huge stereos in cars

but the amount of respect i have for the work you put in is just 100%

i just modded my EG sedan to fit some MB Quart speakers from my GenIII Liberty wagon and although it only required some mdf spacers, a bit of padding and some silicon it was pretty damn tricky

Slow progress last week, I've had a lot of other things to do,
but so far I managed to finish door boards, pull the speaker cables into the passenger door, too , so happy that pulling cables is over!!!.
atm, making the bottom cover for the top shelf (boot side). That's basically the last piece I'll be making (except for the tweeter mounts), then off to laying microsuede all over it, mount sub and speakers, wire to the amp, set it into the right light, and there we go... nearly done :wave:

As you know, mostly I have to do things twice, because there are always some mistakes involved - not always my fault, but anyway....
The day after I finished the door pods I realized that all the hot glue I used to fix suede around the holes had failed!:( Even worse - I left the door pods on the drivers seat (car is outside, under the hot sun) and had to see that hot glue has MELTED on one spot at the back completely, and has left a bloody glue mark on the seat!!! Luckily, after it hardened (after some shade had covered the seat), it was easy to clean up the mess :).
Here you can see the glue failed. Simple solution - staple gun and heaps of staples!!!
Bottom line: Hot glue shouldn't be used in cars - at least not in Australia! Way too hot here!!!

Finished top cover. Even here had to do a thing twice: after mounting it and trying out the light, half of the led strip had failed - probably I damaged it as it's a bit flimsy and not of a very good quality, especially the wires, they're soooo tiny! Anyway, lucky that I ordered two pairs, but only needed 3 pieces, so the spare one came in handy!!!
