Stock wheel nuts on aftermarket wheels

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before but i'm not 100% sure still after doing a bit of research, hoping someone can clarify this for me.

At the moment im using stock integra alloys with these wheel nuts:

The nuts came with my car when i bought it with steelies.

Ill have new wheels in my possession soon and im wondering if i need to buy some new wheel nuts. It seems as if the holes on the aftermarket wheels don't fit with the fat ball nuts i've got at the moment.

I've got a set of D1 wheel nuts (the... long thin ones?) but the tread inside is pretty worn. Is it unsafe to use these? And also i've found i scratch the paint off the D1 nuts when using the nut opener thing (from the boot). Am i using the wrong tool?

You need to find out what type of wheel nut is to be used on your new wheels. They usually either use

*Conical/Tapered
*Ball/Radius
or
*Flat

As for the thread inside being worn, I recommend you staying away from using them. If your wheel nuts fail to hold on your wheels, you could be in a little bit of trouble if things go bad.
Safety is the key here. So don't be dodgy on things that relate to life and death.

And for scratching the coloured wheel nuts, Its usually just a wear and tear thing. I highly recommend you using a breaker bar and a deep socket of the right size for your extended wheel nuts though.
the factory one in your boot might not be long enough to reach all the way down the wheel nut.

Is there a way to find out what type the wheels are besides just looking at the hole? From the picture i can't really tell. I'm assuming the stock ones are "Flat" type.

What sort of wheel/lock nuts do you recommend? Don't wanna cheap out on safety... but dont wanna break the bank either. Was told duralumin ones from JDMyard are good but like $200 :S

Its hard to find nice lock nuts for the flat type wheel nuts ( that I know of )

Your best bet is to wait for your wheels to arrive. Double check what type of wheel nut is needed then go from there =]

For those wheels you might need skinny barrel nuts. They sit within the holes and you need a hex key to reach them, like this

I think i got a whole set from bob jane for like $60 but they rusted after like a year.

By 'whole set' you mean you got the skinny barrel nuts as well as the hex key to open them?

So i can't use aftermarket coloured nuts from traders on here ya? :(

not for those wheels.

go to big name tire/wheel places. Melbourne equivalent to ozzy, tempe, etc.

$2 or $3 or $4 per nut, they should give you the hex key too.

Make sure you buy some "hub rings" for your wheels too.

google hub rings to find out what they are.

Would the tyre place be able to supply me with hub rings specific to my wheel/car as well?

The guy selling me the wheels said he didn't need hub rings. confused!

you only need hubrings if the center bore of the rim is bigger than the hub part. if its too big the rim wont locate onto the hub properly and wont center itself.

I saw your old thread where you had trouble with hub rings lukey. End up solving it? Or did you just change wheels

nah i didnt, ill need to get custom ones made up. but the tyres are nearly unrwc so i havent bothered with it

What's the problem? Is it just the wheel has a weirdly sized centre bore?

yea, and it only need the hub ring to be about 5-6mm thick

Doesn't need to be perfect fit.

close enough is close enough. The plastic ones will expand and contract, so yeah, just get it as close as you can.

Charlie. Get your nuts and rings from the same place.
Just go to a wheel/tire shop.

Yes 16 nuts and a hex key for like $60. You cant use them colorful fat ones they sell here unfortunately.

As for hubcentric rings, you might experience vibration if you dont have them on. Get them they are cheap anyway.

Ended up buying 16 nuts incl. 4 lock nuts for these wheels that the seller used for $30. He said just attach the key head things into a lug wrench. The nuts just need to be longer, hence why stock ones won't fit. I'll give them a wash/polish tomorrow then slap them on and see if i need hub rings.

I've got a quick question... the tyres load rating is lower than factory. Stock is 86H, but the tyres on are 84Y. Is this an issue?

Also what would i pump these tyres to? I've only ever done 36-38psi on my 15" fat fives but since these are 17s, lower profile and lower load rating, would it be higher? like 40+

id only worry about the load ratings if your in a crash. lol

Pump it to 36-42psi. I usually do 38 front 36 rear

Check your door jambs for the cars load rating. The tyres on your stockies might not even be accurate.

Alright chucked the wheels on today, the guy who sold it to me said he's always ran them at 45psi... and he wasn't lying lol they were rock hard and i went to petrol station to reduce them to 38.

The lug seat is conical and the lock nuts i bought (12x1.5) fit great. Only problem now is the centre bore doesn't match up. So i called up 'super tyre & auto' and they said to bring the car in for them to have a look at and to deduce what size hub rings i need. This seems like it's gonna break the bank... fml when they start charging me for a million things :(

hubrings cost like $15 a set, just show them the wheel.

They might sucker you into installing it there and charge you like $60 to put it on all fours. haha

Yeah well the guy on the phone said "bring in it and we'll have a look" which means ill probably have to pay for them to take off my bolts and measure the holes lol

I know the hub size of my car (dc4) is 56.1mm (i think? can anyone confirm), but i dont know how to measure the wheels hub diameter. Can't find the info anywhere on the net as to the exact hub size of these wheels (osaka rs5 17x7)

Rather get some off ebay or some shit, hate going to these tyre places... worst customer service

Wheels look good. What size are the tyres? I ran 34PSI on my 17's.

205/40/17. Raises the car by half a cm, closest diameter i can get to stock with 205

Yeah I had 215/40/17 on my Civic and put them on 34PSI which I thought was perfect. 38 too high IMO. 36 is alright.

Would there really be any significant change in ride between 34-38?

Up to you, how it feels cornering, road noise, fuel economy and whatnot.

i remember having to get hub rings for my rims i went to one place they measured up and said i would have to wait for them to order it in blah blah blah, i just left and i went to another tyre place and asked for a set then the dude gave me a box that was used for a 22" rim and it was overfilling with the rings lol and he said if i can find the right sizes then just take them lol so i borrowed their jack and took the wheel off and sat there trying all the different sizes lol
