Ive been reading a DIY on transforming the auto gear shift to a manual lookalike gearshift. the link given below

would this classify as a defect if i did this for my mates teg?

Not worth the $80 or so bucks worth for the shift knob and shift boot. 3rd gear in park and neutral when driving? Look like a poof man. Then there's also the dangers of not having the safety button on the shifter and not being able to see what your shifter is sitting in
Save the money, at the end of the day, its still an auto -.-

i say do it - but ONLY if you can keep it as clean as the setup in the link
Gotta think about resale too. No one wants to buy a 'manual lookalike'... but then again you could just revert tit back to legit auto gearstick
... ^ i don't thinnk that would be a major factor in selling the car, if anything, it could even be a point of sale, buyer might think it looks cool, he/she is buying auto anyway?
It covers the indicators on the gear shift area, so it might be defectable.
yeah i would be worried about it not indicating which gear you are in - maybe a digital kit next to it? or on the dash?
most/ a lot of auto cars have a 'diagram' of what gear you are in. P R N D D2 D3.. etc. whatever gear you are in, it is highlighted. it shouldn't be a problem.
its detectable when u change a gear knob in a manual car to one with no gear diagram, as there is no reading anywhere else of what gear you are in
in a manual it doesnt really matter as most of them are the same pattern with neutral being a slide in the middle
some autos different gear positions - hell our mazda is a column shift lawl
as long as theres a diagram on the cluster im sure it will be ok - some cars dont have this though
yeah i know that, your missing the point but. if a cop wants to be an ass cause u got no gear diagram on ur gearknob or anywhere else close, you can get defected.

A good thing is to just change the actual auto shifter and not cover it up, ur not gonna fool anyone with that :)
I think its best to replace the oem with a razo like in the link, razo's knobs look uber cool, and adds more bling to the interior
As said, despite it displaying on the dash, legally the shift indicators must be displayed where the shifter is, just like a manual with there shift pattern displayed
afew silly comments here.
1. It's not dangerous if you get an Automatic gear knob with a button because it locks just like the oem knob.
2. A diagram of selection pattern needs to be placed near to the shifting console. (next to it is easiest) for it to be legal.
Yes, but having the shift pattern visible on either the shift knob, or next to it is a very well known, and well versed defect. Its normally the first thing a cop will look for.Quote:
