P Plate ek engine swap

just the other night i blew my engine on my 97 ek1 its still drivable keeping revs under about 3k, pretty sure its the rod bearings. mechanic said it could cost up to 1800 to fix the whole engine if there is block damage and what not. that being said id rather spend some money into a project. being a p plater just want to know ur opinions on b18 or b16 regarding police and legality. also if someone could link me to an ek b18 build thread will be greatly appreciated.
p.s i know i can buy a d16 cheap and install it but i really want some more power and torque.

if the engine never came in the car(of that series) then you need it engineered and P platers cant drive engineered... legally...
so B16 is your option as for B series

but hey wht cops going to really look for engine numbers.. B18 would probably pass the popped bonnet.. :) but doubt a k they arent that ignorant.. :)

haha i really want to do the b18 but cant the cops when they check the rego see that it has been engine swapped or is that not known to them unless they actually know a honda? also any proper build guides of b18 into ek all ive found is eg swaps...

a lot of cops are pretty clueless when it comes to swaps, they just see honda on the valve cover and don't suspect shit.

its the exact same, swapping something into an ek as it is into eg.

ohh okay thanks for clearing that up trism. much appreciated. any mods i should do to the engine before it going in that will make it easier for me now then later? nothing too major just dont want headaches later on and higher costs.

id probably replace the seals and gaskets if i were putting in a used engine... best bet.. :)

Best bet i say is to get a B16 and get some cams and work the head cause they cant see them anyway and you will have saved money instead of buying a B18. Remember that if you get caught on you P Plates with a illegal P Plate car its 3 Demerits considering you have 5 its a big risk. I am having the same dilemma myself and cant decide

i wouldnt waste my time with a b16 unless its because you are scared of defect.. b16 arent that quick.. go b18 much better option. but isnt legal so weigh up pros and cons and make your decision..

I did a swap and I'm on my red Ps. Got the engine rego to the car and only got introuble for having mods. Never had any problems with regards to engine swap

in nsw if you are caught with an illegal p plate car its 7 points...which is all the points a green p plater has. im hoping when the b18 goes in i dont get into too much trouble with it :D only reason im leaning away from b16 is lack of torque compared to the b18cr is it very noticeable? never driven a b16.

B16A is a fun engine. The torque difference between B16 and B18 is noticeable but don't go thinking the B16 isn't enjoyable.

The first thing you need to do is determine your budget. What are you going to spend? And remember that your car is running sh!t already so if you don't want to fix it for $1800 you surely aren't in a position to spend like $6000 on a B18C swap...?

No insurance company will cover you if you don't inform them of an engine swap.

B18 is legal in NSW with p plates since it falls under the up to 15% engine capacity increase rules.

All you need to do after the conversion is get a blue slip (adjustment of records) and also you need a receipt for the engine.

oh wowww grifty thanks for the info. i found a b18c2 half cut for 2800 soo thats great to know will go ahead with that asap. will i need anything other than what the integra half cut already has or will it all bolt up using the dc2 parts? also do i still need to have it engineered and what is the cost of engineering it?

No need for an engineering certificate in NSW, other states may differ.

Go b18c2 if your budget can't go for c7. Later you can change cams and the gearbox or whatnot.

B18c to ek you need vtir loom and wire the vtec solenoid and knock sensor. You gotta change headers and cat to fit.

Legally you need eng cert to rego b18 to ek but sometimes depending on vicroads you can get away with it. Good luck. Ive asked before and the guy said as long it's a 4 cyl to 4cyl it should be ok. Shows how much they know

If your not 110% sure, go check it yourself on the website or call/interview them personally, to be satisfied.

It has been done many time, you will just need a blueslip and your fine

To get it fitted in your EK
You need the following parts:
Ek4 rear bracket
Ek4 Wiring Loom
Mayb Ek4 power steering pump
Passenger side Engine mount ( 2 hole not 3)

Everything else will be plug and play

so can i not use the wiring loom from the half cut i am buying? integra vtir?

Theres no need for a brake upgrade to make it legal, but most people will reccomend changing them since you have a more powerful motor.

This is most likely a noob question but if you have a mechanic you trust not to rip you off, can they order another engine for you and install it (Considering that a D16 to a B18 swap would take a fair amount more knowledge than just installing the same engine again when the old one has died)?

Yeah illegal. I don't think you're supposed to modify anything at all as a P.

In Victoria the only engines that can go into cars is the engine it comes in with different models.
Say for ek best motor youcan put in is b16a
For eg is d16a
Dc5 is k20a

In saying this it's only the motors in audm cars. So if you have b16b you can't put it in ek. Only with eng cert you can. Which goes for any other engines swaps.

they wont know the difference between b16a or b16b :p 1 letter difference. just paint the b16b rocker cover black and voila

They can register b18c in your eg or ek. It's just how lucky you are cause I went there before and they said if it's 4 cyl to 4 cyl it's ok. So they obviously don't know. I'm just telling you whats on the paper

qld cant drive a car with an engine mod plate., but you dont need a mod plate if the engine is 0.2L bigger then stock motor there fore b18c/ b18cr is legal :)

P platers can drive anything in Tassie,common to see red Ps on R32/3 s with big turbos etc.The only P platers driving 4 cylinder Hondas are girls.

in regards to the first page comments about popped bonnet inspections by cops, i have a mate with a stock eg (i mean faded paint and steelies+hubcaps and stock height) with a k24 built by dr honda. Cops pulled him over for a "rbt" and asked if he had any mods, and my mate responded with "oh just a pod filter closed off in an airbox. Coppers took a good look at the engine bay, k24 in your face, and told him "looks fairly stock otherwise" and let him go. LOL. shows how much they knwo about the honda scene haha

if that engine didn't come with the car from factory or was an option, you have to mod plate

dc2r with b18--->k20 = has to be mod plated.

my mate has a 325 with an m3 motor. we took off the m engine covers and the morons didn't know the difference.
so it had individual throttle bodies and ac snitzer lumpy cams. the cops had no idea. even called down 2 highways. no idea at all... ull b fine with anything that says honda and doesn't have a turbo

dam thats shit lol what did you buy and where from? and mine is all done just needs a tune could be done in a week or 2 :D

bought a dc2 front cut from sydney auto dismantlers dont think he could have know but i should have been smarter and had a compression test done oh well its at the mechanics now decided gonna fix it and probably sell up save for either an ep3 or buy a shit box and wait half a year to buy my 33 gtr <3

also congrats on finishing it up man if i do get an ep3 wanna set it up for some track use maybe ill see you out their ;)
