tyre rub

Hey I own an 93' eh9 civic, according the the last owner it has kingspring lows installed & the rims are just stock items. Whenever I hit a bump at speed or have more than one person in the car the tyres rub :eek: (depending on how much weight is in the car it can happen to every tyre) It also happens when I turn full lock occasionally, I have taken the wheels off and it appears that it is rubbing directly above the tyres on the wheel arches. I want to know how to stop this from happening? Is it possible to keep the same springs? any help is muchly appreciated...

Roll the guards? or get some stock suspension and put that on?

tires may be to wide for the stock rims... shocks might be giving way and not holding weight and "sagging" meaning there going soft and not hard to stop the bounciness..... springs wouldn't be the problem... go to pedders or something like that to go a safety check and see if the shocks are any good

if its rubbing directly above the tyres, you might still have wheel arch covers on - take them off

raise it or get used to it. removing the plastic covers will just expose the metal. and on the front theres a pinched looking bit directly above the tread of the tyres, which ive been told will chew them to pieces (at least on DC2/4, which being sorta based the same at EG civic im assuming its the same)

Look into new shocks and if that doesn't work get springs with a higher spring rate.

lower your car more.

that will definitely stop the rubbing.

The pinched metal bit was doing some serious damage, what you have been told is correct, was ripping strips of rubber off my tire every time it hit, I did my best to flatten them out they're not as much of a problem anymore. So you don't think new shocks will solve the problem?

what sorta sussy you running?

would fitting coilovers solve the problem?

Its stock other than the springs as far as I know, I didn't do the work I bought the car with them already installed

You probably have worn out shocks. I have had an old Toyota corona sedan lowered all round by just 30mm and I had the same problem with rubbing and especially when carrying friends home from tafe.

could help alleviate it but i doubt it will 'solve' it.

running something stiffer will deffinetly helo tho.

agree with lukey stiffer springs will stop the wheeel from travelling as much, hopefully enough to stop the scrubbing.

Cheers for the help! Would the cost of stiffer springs and new shocks be pretty close to a set of coilovers anyways? I've spoken to a few people and they think that coilovers are the ideal option?

yeh it would be, coilovers are pretty much just dampers n springs (with some tie rods)
so yeh just get new coilovers at least that way you know the springs will be right for the dampers.

but are the dampers actually wrecked?

id suggest adjustable coilovers, simply cos they are adjustable, and easy to adjust.

Im not sure whether or not the dampers are rooted, from what I've been told if the car has been lowered and its rubbing its either the spring rate being too low or the dampers being shot...

Is it worth getting them inspected? or should I just put the money towards new items?

Also what brands would you suggest for coilovers? I hear buddyclub are quite ok?.... any input is appreciated lads

Trying to stiffen the ride and reducing the travel isnt the right plan of attack.
If its only rubbing the wheel arch then as said previously just roll the guards.

your right, its not tie rods. but ive forgotten what they call those linkage things that come with coilover sets.
i just went out on a limb and called them tie rods :P

if its not rubbing on the outside rolling the guards wouldnt do anything?

Lukey is right, the rubbing is occurring on the inside of the wheel arches not on the outside of the guard itself, flattening the pinched bit of metal out made a noticeable difference, I think stiffer suspension is the solution, I suspected this would be the case but was afraidof the costs involved in replacing the stock items, I think a decent set of coilovers will be worth it on the long-run however...

i need to do that myself, what did you use?

i got some bc racing br type coilovers and i think theyre quick good for the price i got $1250.

if possible go for some rides in cars with coilovers and see what you think
