Can anyone recommend a place who will pull gearbox off inspect, and replace what ever that needs replacing for a decent price? Was quoted a starting price of $650 with GPC.
Can't really afford it ATM coz car is already at GPC getting HG done and thats min $550.
If you pull it off, reco everything.....
if you can't afford it, drive it till it breaks, then fix it.
throw out bearing isnt in your gearbox - its the bearing located in the clutch housing , depresses the clutch pressure plate in n out. Its also known as a release bearing.
Is it this ? Or something else (like input shaft bearing) ?
Benny, car makes weird noises when I depress the clutch or leave it in neutral after a short drive.
Another thing is when I start the car from cold put it in first accelerate and when I take my foot off the acc and let the gears do the work the tranny seems to be noisy as hell..
So what you people reckon my problem is? YouTube vids about how clutch works do not seem to indicate my symptoms are throw out bearing related.
I just spent an hour on YouTube and I reckon of it's to do with clutch I should be able to do the complete clutch change myself plus a mate to help lift gb back in place. new pilot bearing, throw out bearing, flywheel, pressure plate and friction material amazing what you can learn on YouTube.
id say more likely input shaft bearing - common to fail on D and B series boxes , the small casing fails and puts metal crap thru the gearbox. Can give a light grind noise at idle or driving - disappears when you press the clutch in. (as in transmission stops moving)
Gets louder as it fails and falls apart , can make a terrible grind/whine as you accelerate.
if you leave it till it breaks, it will rape your gears... i left it and my 1st gear blew... had to drive on the other gears and sounded like they were on there way out too
sorry to hijack thread...ok guys i have those exact symptoms described, the loud whine is definite there when im in first gear, but when i press the clutch or leave it rolling not in gear the whine is gone.... should i be worried at this point? :S
Im gonna replace my clutch soon as well, so before i go ahead, whats needed to get rid of the noise indefinite, cheers :)
^ your isb is gone.. sounds the same as mine, clutch in and rolling no sounds,

any guess as to how much it will cost to just replace the isb? im guessing around the 500 mark alone?? :(
just swap the gearbox dude, i picked up a b16a gearbox for 300 after much trolling and lowballing lol im sure you can find it much cheaper on a d series.
yeah my mate done exactly what u done, replaced the whole gear box, but what if it same problem comes up again is what worries me :S
But anything 2nd hand is a gamble lol...
Is the isb the one attached to the flywheel and at the very end of the input shaft? Or is it in the gearbox?
isb (input shaft bearing) is the thing that the input shaft spins on, kinda hard to explain without pictures lol. Seems its a common problem on alot of older cars.Quote:

Just go to Honda . Note they often will take time to order in.
IF you have time to drop the box open urself - I would take out the old bearing/a , note the serials and go to a bearing supplier and order them in. Honda IS exactly the same but more expensive

i actually made a thread a while back for the supplier of this bearing in aus. worked out really cheap too :) i got Bennjamin to do mine for me, i highly reccomend him to any one, however you are in vic :(
doesn't matter what you do your gonna be up for the labour of pulling the box out and putting it in.
Don't cut corners, or you'll end up puling the box out twice.
The most expensive part of doing a clutch etc is pulling the box out.
if your only reading youtube i'd recommend you stay away from doing the clutch unless you have someone who knows what they are doing with you.
I've done 3 boxes, on different type of cars. Basically the same on most cars.
BUT Its a dirty job and i actually get other people to do it nowadays rather than doing it myself.

had the same problem with my B gbox ..
took it to Hanis for a quote to replace all 3 bearings only was 650 drive in and drive out.
so i said ill shop round for a 2nd hand ...and there was 1 but they were asking 600 for it ...so i said fk dat shit (FDS)
shopped around for a rebuild/reco box.. one place was asking 1k ..FDS again ..and rang outside of NSW and got a FULLY RECO box ...all synchros, bearings, seals, new ...got it for 650 delivered to my door.
funny thing is my box seems or might have LSD which they had no idea of. lol ...bonus for me.
now my old box is sitting in the parts room collecting dust. but i think ill get the 3 bearings replaced and use it for spare as there was no other problems.
unfortunately bro...there is no other way around it you'd be spending at least 500+ incl labour costs etc.
but i would not recommend a 2nd hand box unless u knw who the previous driver was ..you just dont know the condition of it.

Definately Input shaft bearing. It'll require the gearbox to be removed and open up. Very least all parts will need to be cleaned due to input shaft bearing failure.

bad bad news, besides the isb which had 3 missing bearings, 2 more other bearings were on there last leg, syncros gone and the final drive bearing gone >_<
all up, it was gonna cost around 900 minimum!!!
So im out with no gearbox and no car lol..... fml....
Go B series... if you search hard enough can pick up b18c2 for like $1500-2000
