Hi peeps,
Has anybody got a right up of procedures on how to do a full car respray?
I have the time and effort to put in. Would like to give it a go at home as a little/big project.
Pictures, prices and steps for a backyard job.
How would it look like without an oven to bake it in?
Any info would be a great learning tool.
Is it possible to get a decent finish?
Many thanks in adavanced.
Or even anyone who can do resprays cheap please let me know. Willing to do some prep work myself.

It's a specialist skill (in my opinion) so you should take a good look into any information you're given.
Yes it's possible to get a decent finish.

An oven isn't required since you will be using Acrylic paint. Or you can hire out a booth and spray 2pak which is more expensive and requires more skill.
Basic run down of what's required:
Colour of your choice 4L = $150 - $500 (depending on colour)
Acrylic thinners 4-8L = $100~
Various sheets of sandpaper [wet/dry] = $20~
Sanding block = $1~
Air Compressor (Super Cheap Auto has these on special quite frequently with kits) = $150 - $300
Acrylic Clear 4L = $80~
Acrylic Primer 4L = $60~
Masking Tape [few rolls depending on how much you use] = $5 - $15~
Drop sheets = $5 - $10
Wax & Grease Remover 1-5L = $10 - $30
Optional:
Spray putty/High Fill = $15~/Can (Fixing small imperfections)
Bog/Filler = $15~
Applicator = $5~
Guide Coat 1L - $20~
Time: 1 Day ~ 1 Month
Weather - 24-30 degrees low humidity low wind

i recommend you to use acrylic paint rather than 2pak
if you make a mistake using 2pak you can't really fix it cos you paint once and plus you need an oven spray booth
on the other hand with acrylic paint if you make a mistake i.e paint and it's drip shows you can use sand paper to fix it before using the final clear coat
also acrylic paint is cheaper

electric pump usually burn out quick because your house power point does not have correct amp rate.
these electric pumps usually need 12-15amps, regular power point in homes usually have 10amps.

You can get a professional paint job in the backyard. it's not hard. you just need to take your time.
- Use 2pack paint if possible. the quality and durability is far superior than acrylic. despite what many say, 2 pack paint is no more harder to spray than acrylic nor is it any less forgiving with paint errors.
** if you get sags or runs in your clear, just wait until it fully cures and block sand them out with 1500 grit, then 2000, after buff. same procedure with fine dust or bugs.
** use a tack rag to catch dust and over spray between coats
- Buy a decent spray gun. 1.4mm tip for base/clear. 1.8mm for 2k primer. buy gun regulator and set to 35-40 psi.
** difference between low end and high end gun is bigger spray pattern, durability and spray quality straight off the gun.
- You can get away with a small compressor for backyard jobs. you can get the job done with a super cheap auto 2.5 HP 40 LITRE TANK. all you need to do is split the job into 2 or 3 parts. for eg. spray bonnet, fenders, bumpers today. tomorrow paint doors and trunk. then day after paint rest of body.
** just make sure it's the same batch of paint, same mixing ratio and similar temperature when spraying. or else the shade of colour may be different.
** Frequently drain the water out of compressor. use a water/oil filter, best spot to mount is 7-10 metres at the end of air hose.
- Base coat mixing ratio is always 50:50 or 1:1. for eg. if you have 1 litre of base, then you mix 1 litre of 2k thinner which then makes 2 litres of sprayable paint.
** Clear coat may vary. but usually 2:1 ratio. add 10 - 20% 2k thinner.
** Don't forget to use a paint strainer.
-When spraying 2pack, make sure you wear a respirator. NOT A PAPER DUST MASK!!! very toxic paint. use brand such as Sundstrom or 3M. make sure you don't have people around or any neighbours.
** check with your local council if spraying 2 pack polyurethane paint is allowed.
poison in urethane paint can be absorbed through skin
and it will pass through your 3m half mask cartridge filters
need to have full face mask with positive air pressure, feeding oxygen to your full face.
was told by blackwoods salesman in vic. 3m mask distributor.

who said anything about a half mask? you should be wearing a full mask with A2 organic vapor cartridges with a compulsary particulate filter and a pre filter. limit your work to minutes not hours. and spray in a well ventilated area. if you have access to air supply respiratory system then by all means use it.Quote:

Hey buddy I'm a spraypainter by trade and I do professional respays after hours all work gets done at my house than The car gets taking to a booth to get painted pm me If interested I change half the price a smash shop would =)

Etch primer would be fine to spray over.
Wouldn't hurt to give it a once over with normal primer though.

FYI I have personally contacted the EPA NSW on 3 occasions about spraying 2pack urethane at home. they advised me they do not regulate residental areas unless your running a business I.E painting on a daily basis. that i have to contact my local council to see if painting is allowed. So I called up my local Council, they told me painting is fine however if any of the neighbours complain then you must stop.

Most DIY'ers at home should stick to Acrylic either way as it's easy to fix mistakes with.
If you want to paint 2pak, hire a booth and oven and do it properly.
I have contacted EPA aswell I guess I got someone else on the phone as 2pak urethane has pigments which **** you up silly.. So spraying it in an uncontrolled environment with overspray possibly seeping into your neighbours house and causing damage to their lungs will be in your hands to deal with.

If you read my first post. i said NOT to paint near neighbours or family members. For eg, If your little sister is in the backyard playing, would you start spray painting? i wouldn't think so regardless whether it's acrylic or 2pack paint is all toxic either way.
At the end of the day it comes down to common sense and proper judgement before spray painting. If you have access to a booth or proper saftey equipment then by all means use it. I'm only merely giving an alternative point of view.

But please; Don't compare acrylic to urethane as being 'all toxic either way'. Urethane is toxic in it's own class and I've experienced the effects of it first hand.
I would rather stick to advice from my teacher who taught for 55+ years than some guy on a forum. No offence by this either. I think it's clear cut.
