Hi everyone, i wanna put a rear sway bar in my ek to get rid of some body roll and give the front a bit more grip but is doing the front sway bar aswell necessary?? I wanna go for the 22mm ctr rear sway bar. My car is completely stock btw..:eek:

You'd need a subframe brace if wanting to run a ctr rsb on a stock ek1 or else you'll end up tearing out your subframe.
fsb not necessary, your car will just tend to oversteer a lot without one.
If your car is a CXI then you don't even have a front swaybar. would recommend getting at least a GLI swaybar 22mm (you'll also need LCA's)
Yeah my car is a cxi. Dang, this is getting expensive now thought i could get away with just the rsb. Besides the ctr rsb are there any other ones worth looking at i.e. whiteline... etc? So for braces should i just be looking at the asr or something? Im not gonna go to the trouble of changing LCA'S in the front for just the gli FSB, what FSB should i be looking for i.e. brand, diameter.
hey man. if youre trying to get rid of body roll why not just lower the car. itll look nice and reduce any major bodyroll if the springs are stiff enough. then just get a set of ek4 sway bars and you should be okay for daily driving.
I recommend getting an entire front swaybar and control arms off a ek4 or em1.
Op , you will need front lower control arms from a ek4 , em1 or later ek1 that has a front swaybar- these have mounting points for a front swaybar.
Then , invest in an ASR brace and CTR / ek9 rear swaybar setup and your car will handle a lot better. A lot less body roll and e ride will not be affected.
Total investment = around $500-600 for a great boost in handling , much more than lowering springs , coil overs etc.
I was looking under my car just to make sure the rsb will fit and also noticed that all the bushings (lca, suspension etc..) look very brown, old and were really firm. While im doing the sway bars would it be wise to redo all the bushings aswell. Right now i obviously have neither a front or rear sway bar but find myself getting much more understeer then over. Wouldn't just doing the rear balance the car out enough to not warrant the front?

Yeah its not a bad idea doing front and rear, i want my car balanced obviously. wheres the best place to get everything i need i.e. fsb, rsb, lcas, subframe brace, a new set of bushings etc.. I want to try stick oem thou so idk maybe ctr rsb with ek4 fsb and lcas as people have suggested. That should probably do the trick :p
year if you want to go oem try find an ek4 wreck, get all your parts off there. if you want to go ctr swaybars, might as well get ctr front swaybar as well, a lot thicker than ek4 ones. you can pick up a set of gli or ek4 front lca and they'll fit ek9 swaybars. just get a rear subframe brace like asr or function 7 or whatever and you're good to go :) . dont put ek9 rsb without rear brace, will tear your subframe apart!
The EK4 front LCA's are also beefier to compensate for the thicker swaybar which means you'll also need EK4 forks.
If i go gli fsb and lcas i wont need new forks will i? And will they balance alright with a ctr rsb? And out of curiosity whats the diameter of the gli / ek4 / ctr fsb?

OH yeah, i can see why they don't do it anymore...would've been horrible...hahaha
I can see it sliding back and forth bending the u-bolts once the bushes get a little bit of wear on them.
Btw guys eibach also make a f / r kit 17mm rsb 26mm fsb and i THINK it comes with all mounting hardware and i assume you don't need any extras like lcas and what not does anyone have an experience with the eibach kits, or no anything about them. Yhey seem to be quite good.

just to correct your post alittle - the eibach kit suits EG/EH/DC/EK/EM/EJ chassis (92-95 for Eg/EH , 96-00 for EK/EM/EJ and 93-00 for DC2/4) and is 26mm front and 17mm rear.
Just to add to this, Standard EK1/EJ8 all use a 22mm fsb, where as ek4/ek9 is 26mm, so if u go 22mm rear swaybar, i think its gonna give un easy handling if u decide to go 22mm fsb
IMO if it works out cheaper to get a swaybar thats already made for the car get it, and less hassle n parts to remove.....
Ive yet to decide on a bigger sway bar as im running 22mm fsb and 20mm white line rsb
AND remember white line is solid swaybars, so they are 50 percent rigid than the oem hollow bars so that also has to be factored in.
Im going to try stick with oem stuff, but mainly at the end of the day, i want a car thats fun to drive i.e. sharp turn in, little body roll grippy and neutral and this is also on a budget.
And now can someone clear things up. I've been reading and everyone seems to go one way or another about sway bar effects. As an example ill use the rsb. Some people say that increasing size of the rear sway bar helps get rid of oversteer i.e. more grip at the back, this would mean that you tune the rear sway bar for the rear of the car where as some say it helps get rid of understeer i.e. more grip at the front, which would mean you tune the rear sway bar for the front of the car. WHICH ONE IS IT!!!
Thicker rsb means more over steer, BUT! depends also how the front end of the car is setup... just because its a thicker rsb doesnt mean its gonna over steerQuote:

But with our cars, ek 1996 - 00 Having a front 22mm swaybar and rear 22mm means more of a over steer nature, but u can always counter that with tuning or buying a set of coilovers to combat it... but prbs easier to just get the correct swaybar size for the coilover as they are cheaper than 1.5k coilover setup.
at the end of the day its down to how u drive and how u setup the car.. Some want over steer car some prefer neutral feel to the car
Just to add -
(on a road car / non race car) The most influence on a cars handling comes from upgrading F/R swaybars.
A car on standard height and shocks/springs with upgraded swaybars will be a much better ride and better handling than any coilovers

Im almost there, i've installed the lcs (really easy actually), and now am wondering how to get the sway bar in. Is it supposed to go over the exhaust i.e. i need to take the exhaust off so i can fit the sway bar? And should i be using lock tight for any of this like putting the lca mounting bolts back on or just cranking them up really tight without lock tight.

Yes need to remove A-pipe of exhaust
And torque the bolts to spec
should b fairly straight foward bolt on job, and try to re torque the lca bolts to correct specs, if u got a torque wrench, the workshop manual in no way states to use lock tight liquid, so i wouldnt lolQuote:

Ok. Im finished, its in and everything's back together. Cars running nicely but yet to give it a real flogging but so far i've noticed body roll has dropped ridiculously and the front end feels much more planted. Just want to say thanks too all of you for helping me with the install, you guys really helped me out!

Yes i did. Gli front lcas and sway bar. So far the difference is huge!! Definatly a worth while upgrade for a cxi especially when you install it yourself not to mention the satisfaction of doing it, im addicted now!! I was quoted $500.00 to install the stuff :eek: AND nothings fallen off my car either :thumbsup: Now im looking for a rear sway bar where i don't need subframe reinforcement so what around 18mm.Quote:
