CL9. Car feeling sluggish and better fuel econ?

I think there's something wrong with my car but I don't know what it is?

So about the car, its a 05 luxury auto and its sitting on about 85,000km and it's only ever been filled with bp ultimate. Owned since new.

The problem is that recently (past few weeks), the car has been getting more out of a tank than usual. Normally, I'd get roughly 420-430km before the indicator comes on but now it goes up to 450-460. I've also noticed that the car feels abit sluggish, lack and power and the car taking longer to rev than usual, this is much more noticeable when I'm going up hill. Nothing's been changed on the car recently so not sure what's going on.

Any ideas?

sounds like your ecu has made some kind of change to suit the weather or something

how sluggish are you talking about? Can't race it? Can't keep up with a bus?

It's not completely slow, it feels like its 'slower' by 20-25% if that makes sense?


When I was going uphill on a steep incline yesterday, it sat on second gear at around 70km/h and it barely rose at all.
I did it again the second time and it went as it would usually, went to around 100/110 at 6-6500 rpm on second.

Not sure if its back to normal or not now, any idea if there's any particular type of maintenance or parts replacement I should do?

sounds like ECU.

All you have to do is reset the ecu to restart the cycle.

how do you reset the ecu?

disconnect battery for 10m, reconnect.

brb... lol

If I have a aftermarket head unit, would my settings for that be reset as well if I disconnect the battery?

yup......

Okays, I resettled the ECU and went for a drive earlier. It feels like its back to normal, I did a pull to redline on second when I went on the motorway and it rev'ed fine.

Good advice there, thanks. I'll post again if the fuel econ is still off.

Yes if you disconnect your battery, always disconnect the negative (black side) first, and reconnect it last.

yeah, no point. just do one (negative terminal), 10-15 mins later, come back, done and dusted.

negative on cu2 is easier to take off too lol

I read from the tsx forum that you can get the ECU updated with the latest honda's firmware by a dealer. Have anyone requested for this service to be done to their accord euros and if so, at what cost? Some firmware update will recalibrate the engine performance or the transmission according to the tsx post.

Guess I'll just have to ask them dealers

Ooft, the problem is still there :( The fuel tank is abit above half and its on about 270 k/m on its current tank, whereas it's normally sitting on like 210 at that point. And again power loss is most noticeable when going up hill.
Should I just get it checked out at a mechanic?

We have just installed our 3rd ECU at the dealers.

Our car, an 2005 Accord Euro luxury, was running poorly over a long period, lacking power, acceleration, and had difficulty pulling a small box trailer.

Then the dealer found ants in the ECU. I thought this was a joke but there were quite a lot of ants.

Apparently they are attracted to the resin that coats the circuit board.

We installed a second ECU but it only lasted two weeks and the VSA stopped working, and the MIL came on. Dealer pulled the ECU and it had more ants in it.

We've just put the 3rd in and sprayed the inside of the car with ant spray, also the ECU case and around where it is mounted.

Still don't think it's possible? When I bought this 3rd ECU (I had the 2nd one already) from Honbits Todd told me they had sold several already, all for the same problem.

So check inside your ECU if you are having problems with performance and economy. It only takes about 10minutes and is worth peace of mind.

A new ECU from Honda - $2,500 installed. Even a used unit is about $400.

The ECU is mounted behind the centre console, held in by two 10mm bolts, behind some plastic trims pieces on both sides. The driver's side you have to remove the footrest - it just clips off.
