B18C-swapped EM1 (12k) or DC2R (11.5k)?

Thought this would be the more appropriate sub-forum for the question, probably just need someone to relay back my thoughts tbh haha

Looking to pick up a car soon and two cars have caught my eye, in particular a 99' EM1 (Body 190, xxx kms, engine 120, xxx kms) with a J-spec B18C DC2R engine and a 00' B18C7 DC2R (200, xxx kms). Both cars do in fact have comparable mods (intake, headers, exhaust, coilovers) with the EM1 having a few extras (sway bar, short shifter, s80 w/ LSD). The asking price for the EM1 is 12k, whilst the DC2R is 11.5k.

Is the EM1 really justifiable at this price range that it's more beneficial over the DC2R in terms of performance?

Sorry in advance if I'm not asking the right questions or provided enough information, will do if needed.

Mind you the EM1 currently has no rego

Performance wise you will find the EM1 will be faster,


no rego may be a concern, I'm not sure of the NSW laws regarding unregistered cars getting re registered.

its iconic car for Honda.
and i think its gonna be future classic.

I seem to still be siding with getting the EM1 atm, is the difference between the B18C-R and the B18c7 really that much?

Does 12k sound about the right price point for it? Or does that sound quite a bit for what it's worth.

it's a bit expensive I think
for a few extra grand you would buy other cars like ep3r, wrx, mazda 3 mps, golf gti, silvias

Realistically, the dc2 is too cheap. And the em1 is not registrable, unless you're willing to fork out lots of money to get it mod plated and what not. Unless you know a person to chuck it over the pits in a very dodgy fashion, of which would get you defected hard if found out.

Not good examples, if I've ever seen them (based on price and brief description)

Also yes, 12k for am em1 with a b18c is stupidly expensive

Wait around and get a dc2r, alot better then an em1.. can find dc2r for cheaper these days with low k's

lmao you're foolish to think an em1 is worth 12k, just cause it has a b18 in it lol.

if the em1 is out of rego, 12k is even more ridiculous. if its been out of rego for more than 3 months its gotta get blue slipped and thats a whole bunch of costs you dont want to pay if you dont have too.

either way, both will cost money, both are overpriced (dc2r is acceptable in a way, em1 is just grossly overpriced), it all comes down to how much you really want to spend.

Honestly both cars are overpriced, Dc2rs' have been getting away with it cause they are very desirable amongst the P-plate community/fan boys (which consists of about 80-90% of DC2r owners).

Save up a little more and get a s15, or even a clean s14-a can be had for less money and has more potential. These kind of turbo cars are cheaper, due to the population that has demand for them cannot drive due to being on their P's; resulting in a lower demand and lower value.

A 14+ year old car with 200,000+km is not worth 11K+.

Yeah my thoughts exactly, might have to give it a miss. I wouldn't mind it as much if it was at a better price point but the owner must obviously feel like that's what his car is worth. Actually asked two others about their B18C-R swapped EM1's - both with rego - one quotes his @ 12k as well and the other @ 7.5k (PPSR check showed it had finance owing, listed as a 'security interest') :/ I may as well try and gun for the B16's at this point haha, should probably just learn to be contempt.

Except that cheap silvias are all rooted and have been flogged. You need to know a lot to be able to gather if a car is ballsed. And I doubt op has those skills/ that knowledge. As said, drift tax has hit anything drift worthy hard, as well as they have mostly all been flogged to within an inch of their life if they are stock.

Dc2rs are still worth between 10 and 15, due to that being what people are willing to pay for them. The p plater law aided that. Whether people think they are worth less or not, won't change anything. Market value is between 10 and 15. 10k for a crap ones. Market values don't change with words, they change with less interest and maybe selling cars for less than they are worth. Which nobody will do. They want to sell them for as much as they can


As for the em1, b18c civics with a fair few upgrades go for around 8k~ em1s probably around that too. Non rego and non rwc/ blueslipped? Even less.

Your right it is about supply and demand, this goes for non-turbo silvias and skylines as well.
There are a good number of s-chassis that are in good stock untrashed condition; I have had a few.

However, every single dc2r or vtec equiped honda has been trashed within an inch of its life, because they are designed to make power right at the redline. In all my years I have not seen one that hasn't been trashed, i have also owned 2 Dc2rs'; that also doesn't mean that the car will be badly looked after.


Op, if I was you I would go for bang for buck or $ to performance. Unless your on P's, then you are stuck with over priced cars.

DC2R any day of the week.

It's a true sports car.

EM1 is a grocery getter with a few extra ponies, even with a B18.

But considering shes unregistered and your willing to pay 12k. I think you shouldn't buy a fast car. Spend that money in getting professional help.

I only bought a DC4 because it was a cheap daily run about that cost me $5k and it had 75k kms on the clock. $12k on a Honda is ridiculous, $12k on a Nissan gets you any amount of fast Skyline's or Silvia's. P plate laws mean NA cars are worth more than what they should be.... Just buy a Silvia or a Skyline, even a JZA80 for $12k.

Well, no.
12k will get you a nissan that's either had work done to it, and has been flogged to an inch of it's life. Otherwise it'll get you close to a 'stock' nissan.
12k SHOULD get you a decently built converted civic (normally 8-9k) or a decent dc2r.

Don't worry guys of course I didn't go for the EM1 haha. More so I wanted a valuation of it, and still at the end of the day for that money it's still an EM1 regardless. I would be better off saving for something with lower KM's and of the DC2R/DC5R variety. Just sad maybe not being able to own a proper EM1 (to my specifications lol: black, sunroof and has a spoiler).

Well that's wrong.
<15k and rwd is 786, which includes vans, utes, suvs, etc.
Manual brings it down to 415 with still vans, utes, suvs
coupe brings it down to 265, which is pretty much what all the good rwd nissans are (bar the few hatches, which by the way there is only 25 of. and 15 sedans)

hondas sub 15k:

Not really a need for body type, as there is some sedans, some hatches, etc. Different to the nissans where they are 80% coupes, 12% hatches and 8% sedans. very very very rough percentages there)


But yeap, there is a few, no doubt at least half of those nissans have been flogged within an inch of their life, drifted, etc. A small group have no doubt been written off. Some were modified poorly/ dodgily, and were brought back to stock to sell (some bits still being dodgy), etc.
Not saying honda is exempt from that, but, those nissans being rwd, and drifting being in right now. Not hard to tell a fair few are ex drift pigs, despite looking clean. A pig doesn't have to be damaged
