First Pics - Prototype Intake

Well after some more/final testing today I can bring to you the first pic of the intake Adrian has been painstakingly working on......

This is still the prototype and the propper one still needs to be finished off.

We did a back-to-back run against the OEM box (the car remained strapped to the dyno the whole time to get figures as comparable as possible) and we saw an increase of a bit over 5% at the wheels. OK so it was only about 4kw or thereabouts, but it's not half bad for what will be a simple bolt-on mod.

A fair amount of dno time went in to getting the length spot-on. It's amazing how much difference 1" in length made.

For all those worried about pods making you lose your low-end...fear not. This setup does not lose out anywhere in the rev range.....

I will post up dyno readings once the final product is ready.....

Sound is good...probably a bit louder than the A'pexi...

It's not that hard to get at the filter...the front bar pops off in like 2 minutes! Plus how often do you need to get at the filter? We went for maximum gains and because the filter is enclosed you shouldn't get hassled by the cops and you get a nice cold air feed.

That filter was just something being used for the dyno testing. The actual filter used will be different, though it hasn't been confirmed what type yet. It all comes down to cost so that the overall kit can be viable and competitive....

Gasper, not sure what you mean by "is there any other position can feel more cold air?" It's not going to get much colder than in the wheel well as it is virtually cut off from the engine bay, and it receives cold air via the factory duct in the front bar.....

I had previously looked at getting an enclosure made for in the engine bay, but the size of the engine bay is very restrictive and unless you go something like the ultra expensive carbon fiber Gruppe M I can't see much else working in there (I'm talking fully enclosed options)...

It all comes down to the length of the pipe too. It wasn't just a "make the pipe to go into the wheel well and see how it goes" type effort. With an extra inch in length, that setup makes virtually the same power as the factory box!

Thats great stuff Jus. :thumbsup: Btw, whats the diameter of the pipe? 2 1/2 ?? Sure feels great with the Apexi pod!

how long is that pipe? it would cost a fair bit for whole kit? $450?

CarBoy - Yep that was me!

JazzR - Haven't seen any specific details on the Gruppe M. One thing is for sure though, it will leave you with a very light wallet - they are about $800-900! On DC5Rs the Injen intake (similar concept to that used on my car) makes more power than the Gruppe M.

Muli - I'm not 100% sure on the final length as there was still some cutting and trimming being done today to get the length spot-on - the production model still has to be made up. As for price, that hasn't been confirmed yet as there is still some decisions to be made regarding the filter to be used. As far as I am aware, all attempts are being made to make the kit competitive with the A'pexi unit (price wise).

This will be a 100% bolt-on kit though.

This won't be/isn't a "custom kit". It will be a buy it off the shelf kit. It is only "custom" at this stage because the kit is being developed as all off the shelf kits would start out.

I don't think there is any place cooler....as mentioned, the filter is shielded outside the engine bay and receives direct air flow from outside the car. You can't get any cooler than that. Did you have any any other thoughts on it? You need to be creative with the limted space we have!

Hey Jus,

Are u selling these things? They looked perfect and damm good. I`ve just got myself an Apexi cone with a customised rubber big belly elbow, but the engine bay heat is too much for it for local temperature, think that your solution is most convincing and neat for its space constrain, and best using by Apexi pod. Issit possible to shipped it to Singapore without the filters( Apexi ) after U finished R&D it?? Hehehe.... :D :D :D

Looks great. I just would like to know about water intake, I doubt any water would get into the engine but is there a way to stop any water or condensation pooling at the lowest point of the pipe?

not the engine bay but water into the filter

Just my $0.02 cents,

If you carefully sealed up the intake area from bottom to sides and front with somekind of sponge material, and then DIY a ram air flex piping into the area for feeding some cool air from outside, think thats should be safe enough, thou not 100%. If in case encounter floods, definately have to turn back lah.. :D

Make a button in the car so when u press it, the pod moves to a different position so water can't get to it :D

good idea mate
coz my front bar is not OEM so it may not be as seal as the stock one. So seal the pod with a plastic box and have CAI pipe link to it will be good for long term maintainance

Adrian is the one who deserves the credit. He (and Ruf) arer the ones that have been putting in the time to get things right.

GD1 Jazz - I don't see any reason why the intake couldn't be sent over to Asia. Obviously there is a much bigger market over there so I am assuming that would be something Adrian would be looking at.

As for the whole water in the filter thing, On a stock car it shouldn't present any problems. On a car like TypeG's that has a different front bar and the filter is overly exposed, it may be slightly different. Adrian would need to be the one to give a more correct answer in regards to that. On a car with a stock bumper, the filter is essentially sealed within the wheel well and has the cold air feed from the factory pickup in the front bar. The only way water will become a problem is if you are driving through a foot of water!

where is the factory pick up in the front bar anyway??? i have taken out the front bar before... is there any??? can u take the pic of ur car jus10.... i am just curious.... ur bar is out anyway.... thanx

FIT - price hasn't even been confimed yet, but I am guessing it WON'T include instalation. I don't know of any brands selling intakes with a "fully installed" price, though no doubt it can be arranged if you wish (it's not an overly difficult job - 30 minutes).

Yah loh...tho this kinda setup are common in the market, but this the first and only ones i`ve seen in a Jazzie manz :thumbsup: . In Singapore, some workshops done that also in the Jazzies & City`s, but uses flexible heat resistance hoses( cloth type mat`l with metal ring coils around it ) as a substitute for the alu pipe, some kinda freak innovations! :thumbdwn:

I have tried both and I rate muli's pod intake setup higher than my Apexi pod intake. I don't know what makes the difference as I only know very little about intake pipe design.

We tried the intake on an auto Jazz, but it doesn't fit. (It fouls on the gearbox as you guessed)
Rather than attempt to make a universal intake, we'll make a dedicated auto version soon after the manual is released.

The 1st production run of the new Jazz CAI intake is now completed..
The production model will be available later this week. (Wednesday)
Hopefully Justin will post some pics when his is fitted. (Justin... Call me 0401869524)
They'll be available in the OZHonda Trader's section.
Once the 1st production model is fitted to Justin's car,
We can then finalise our desision on filter choice & tell everyone the finished price.

I think the price is reasonable for 4kw gain on the wheel, too bad I've already got a Apexi Kit.

With regards to resale value, it's really hard to judge an aftermarket performance part that way. You buy the intake and you use it and get the enjoyment out of it.. To me, the value is in the enjoyment not in the intake itself.

err 4kw atw sounds not bad on a jazz but can we really feel the difference on the road...????

I paid bit over $300, $100 for filter i think and bit over $200 for pipe work, steel would of been alot cheaper.on mine a bit over 4kw gain i think its well worth it for the money, plus it does make the engine sound so much better, actually dont think i could hear it before.

Are you after Jap brand names or dyno-proven performance gains? Oh you can't even see the filter once it is installed so no one will ever know what you have anyway. Bottom line is, the K&N works. To use an A'pexi filter will probably add atleast another $60-$80 to the price of the kit.....

K&N is not in my top list of filters also not due to performancegains issue but it`s dust filtration capabilities compared to the Apexi paper based filter, & my bottom line is you get a dirty engine very quickly, & that also means an unhealty engine, providing oil changed at intervals shortened by few thousands in KM.

I do also agree with Jus that u need to fork out additional $$ cos the Apexi needs an additional adaptor to couple it to the pipe line, which also means that u pay $4XX for it definately! Maybe should have options of filters for this genius induction kit so that customers will have various choices of filters for their needs.

BTW, how come still no product pictures yet, then how to buy??? :rolleyes:

i would like to see the performance diff b/t K&N and Apexi on the same air intake though...heh.....even just minor, personally think its interesting to find out.

Jap product is not just all about "brand name"~i think they are better in some aspects. Not all people are stupid just buying the brand. Well, of course, value wise, K&N might be really the one to pick. but i think Apexi is relatively cheap compare to rest of good Jap filter. (Don't even talk think brand like ARC~:P)

i agree with GD1 Jazz, since it's not a manufacturing product (i meant, not like Blitz or Apexi kit), it might make it more possible and add value to customers to have various choices.

i am not bitching this CAI here, in fact i really like it a lot, but just have some suggestions~:)

We chose the K&N air filter because it is the best air filter for this application.
In case you were not aware, a K&N air filter offers the following:

• Washable and Reusable
• Will NOT Void Vehicle Warranty
• Lasts up to 80,000km before cleaning is required depending on driving conditions
• 10 Year / Million Mile Limited Warranty
• High Air Flow with Excellent Filtration.
• SAE J726 pass

Further, the filtration provided by a K&N air filter is nothing short of excellent.
K&N air filters are tested to deliver 97~98% efficiency - SAE J726
This is a testing procedure developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers identified as the SAE J726 procedure.
This test demonstrates the ability of an air filter to protect your engine.
In this test, the air filter is subjected to particles ranging in size from less than 5.5 microns to 176 microns.
Studies have shown most engine wear is caused by particles 10 to 20 microns in size.
K&N air filters, like most quality disposable air filters, provide excellent filtration of these particles.
The result of the above test procedure is a specific air filtration efficiency number.
This efficiency number represents the percentage of test dust retained by the filter and thereby kept out of an engine.
K&N air filters achieve maximum airflow while achieving an overall filtration efficiency of 97~ 98%.

Regarding the Jazz CAI
We have developed an intake system that is tested & proven to work.
Further it is priced fairly too.
An alternative to the K&N air filter selected will not be offered or discussed.

If you think filter comparison testing etc would be interesting...
You're welcome to purchase an intake and go for your life.
Or if you or your mate, think you know better...
By all means, develop your own CAI.

Wheras here you have a product designed from scratch and proven to work. Beats me why you would want to spend your money on something else that hasn't been proven.

k&N will be good enough for street use

That is correct. All parts required are included except for tools.
We'd be more than happy to fit the intake for you.
Fitting time should take the average punter no more than 2 hours.*

* I have not yet officially released this product as, currently we have only have only produced a text draft of the fitting instructions.
I still need to produce step by step photos to be included in these fitting instructions.
The intent is to produce fitting instructions that are very clear and easy to follow for home handymen & mechanics alike.
