WRENCHIN' WITH TRAV - Clutch Fluid Change

Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself, OzHonda nor Underground Imports take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim: To change clutch fluid on my eg5 HB.

Time: 10min

Required:
- 8mm Ring Spanner/Ratchet
- Bleeder Tool
- DOT 4 Fluid ( OEM honda brake fluid is fine )
- Old Fluid Container

Info:
Um this much be the easiest fluid change to do on your car, yes even easier than the window washer fluid LOL. give it a go, u car actually might need it doin. well mine does, been at LEAST 90 000ks on same fluid!

Step 1:
Ok pop bonnet. Take off Clutch fluid resevoir and feast and the soya sauce that is ur clutch fluid!!! lol Then remove the lil bleed nipple cover, and attatch bleeding tool line. (located near ur exhaust mani btw)

Step 2:
OK heres the tricky bit lol, undo bleed nipple and start pumping! make sure the resevoir doesnt get to low as to let air into the system, keep topping it up. Keep pumping until the resevoir is cleaner and all bubbles and contaminants are out of the system and in your container.

Step 3:
Ok tighten nipple, remove bottle of poop, reinstall cover. Wipe under the resevoir cap and reinstall. now jump in your car and check the pedal is firm.

Your done.

ok the point of this is relatively small but its does get rid of any air, contaminants and moisture. I found my pedal slightly firmer, i havent driven it yet but i imagine not much of a differnce in performance BUT least i know now its changed and it gives me peace of mind, which is justification enough for me.

hahah sick mofo. Anyway i ahve done this to by eg civic before i felt the clutch padel was a little firmer. but the benifit i found was gear changing seems a little smoother.

for the amount of time and money u got to spend doing this i think it worth it big time.

Where do u get the bleeder tool from?? And can it be used for the brakes as well?? Oh yeah and how much do these cost??

ok $15.00 from super crap auto. and yes its for brakes too.

Quick question: Is the fluid that you have removed meant to be that dark? I assume the new fluid is clear right, so why would there be such a dramatic change?

and man fluid that comes out looks like soya souce, dot 4 fluid is yellowy stuff sorta a lil bit thicker than water but not as much as honey.

should be yellowy sorta :confused:

in STEP 2 you said, keep topping up.

but wont it run down new fluid in this way??? or keep topping up till it will start draining new fluid??

Yes...it will run down the piping ofcourse. The idea is to keep pumping, until all old fluid is pumped thru , and ann airbubbles are gone.
Once you see the fluid is clear / new in the pipe , retighten up the bleed bolt and that shoudl be fine :)

u have to 'flush' the old shit ouy buy puttin new stuff in the top and pumping it out.

man the bleeder tool is that, a bleeder tool. its basically a tube with a valve in it.

u can use some pipin if u wish cept it wont be as good LOL

egSi, just asking because i have one small siphon pump in garage atm :)

thought may be that will do the same job, but if it wont, then will better go and buy bleeder from bigw. saw last night in bigw for $12.

yeah man just get the bleeder tool, can be used for brake fluid as well, it takes the worry bout gettin air in the hydraulic system away, makin it a lil less stressful and more enjoyable.

higly recommend replacing all fluids in your care regulary :thumbsup:

just done now, took me 10 mins to do it. Here is mine, it looks real filthy :)

Note: to pump it quickly, when pumping let clutch padle come back fully, basicaly its flushed out at that time when clutch padel comes back.

Trav, clutch is too soft now, i think it needs little bit adjustment to make it but tight. where would i find its adjustment? thanx.

You cant adjust it , Its run via a hydraulic line. Maybe , excess air has gotten into your line during this flush - try again and take care not to let any in !

Or...you are jsut used to such a stiff wonky clutch pedal feel ehe.

lol softer? mine was slightly firmer on depress.

adjust? im sure ur manual 'should' have something on clutch pedal 'travel' adjustments.. maybe :confused:

u need to bleed it again..

Just did my clutch fluid and the oil looks like dirt water.
Pedal feels firmer now :thumbsup:

but I was suprise by the peddle droping to the floor when I pressed, had to pump it manually with my hand.

so just keep filling up while its being drained from underneth?? just making sure dont want air in it thats all.

u have to pump the clutch to get the old fluid out while keepin the resevoir full of new stuff so it can be sucked into the system, hence replacing the old shite :thumbsup:

went to buy my bleeder today. cost me 3 bux...hope it works lol came with a magnet too for me to stick onto my metal car bits.

ps. can you clear this up for me.
Honda break fluid is for the clutch also as well as break.
Honda MTF is for the gearbox ?

YES :)

Honda dot 4 fluid is for brakes and clutch hydralic system (both are hydraulic systems:))
And MTF is made for the manual gearboxes...

when im pumpin the clutch pedal, the pedal just drops and doesnt spring back

yes its meant to be like that.
push to flush out the fluids n pull to grab more fliud, do it a few times, and close up the nut !

Its best to have TWO people doing this - one pumping and the other topping up and watching the drain , wiating for the fluid to be soild flow and CLEAN.
Once it is clean , pump the clutch a couple more times and hold the clutch to the floor THEN re-tighten the 8mm slave nipple. Top up the master cylinder if need be and thats it

did mine today, yay... man this is so simple!

the worst thing about it is the price supercheap wants to charge for a lil piece of hose and plastic clip :eek:
just bought 50c of clear hose from bunnings :thumbsup:

i have to say though my pedal feels softer too and i know i didnt get air in there. but at least it doesnt squeak anymore when i push it in :)

and tomorrow, the brakes!

after doin this change at 80000km i luv the clutch as it was so smooth to use.. along wif mtf fluid changed also....

awesome write up, thought I had done a master/slave cylinder in my Integra. Turns out there was just some air in the system :thumbsup:

i didnt do this 2day ran out of time but i bought what need though.

i went to repco and they wanted $19.50 for a el cheapo plastic bleeder kit.

so i drove to east coast auto parts and got a bleeder kit with a metal valve for $9.50.

that looks like a hecktic bong bottle =P

i did this diy and my fluid was like tar black.

yet to drive my car...

very easy job...

just done mine , shifts slightly smoother but i very much doubt it

was easy all i did was remove the bleed valve nipple and then pumped the clutch and just before it went to low i put some more in , i flushed out the system used up 500mls

i think i did very very very bad

all i did was removed the bleeder valve completly and kept pumping the clutch pedal didnt let it go below lo then put the valve back on and drove

now my clutch is rooted aka lots of air i think

i havnt bled my clutch yet. but my bleed nipple doesnt seem to be tightened all the way ( i can still see alot of thread ). is there a reason for this. btw my car was seriviced all its life at the honda dealer before i bought it. thanks in advance guys
