Hey guys, some people say hondas are not good motors to turbo charge as their hi compression motors and theyl detonate, and others say that honda motors love turbo if youve got the right setup and not to much boost. what do people think, because im confused and i dont no who to listen 2?
wow, i am surprised no one has jumped on this topic. Franki, plenty of people will tell you plenty of stuff... stuff that they have read off other forums and stuff that they have heard.
Listen to the people who turbocharge hondas everyday of the week. There are a few on this forum, knowledgeable down to earth folk. I am no turbo expert, but in my opinion a turbocharger in a honda enhances the characteristics of an already excellent stock engine - at low boost with no internal mods it can be a good way to source some extra kw, without blowing the budget on a NA path.

Well one thing is for sure, Honda Motors were not designed to be boosted or they would have been turbo charged out of the Factory. However they are excellent engines that are very durable and carry some of those qualities which are desirable for a turbo engine. To start off their are some low compression honda engines and their are some high compression engines. The desirable quality for turbo is low compression. The detonation does not come instantly with a turbo charger being added to a honda engine, its a result of several factors.. (combustion chamber temps, timing, Octane rating in fuel) If you have the right set up you can have lots of boost or a little bit, thats really up to you. Ive turbocharged close to 15 hondas and have 2 more in the works. The fact of the matter is, if your educated on the stuff and motors and general, you know which factors need to be improved strengthened on a stock honda motor to prepare for boost. It is not unachievable by any means

i have a dc5r, would turbo charging with AVO'S bolt on running 8psi damage my motor as it has stock internals. what do people recon :honda:

keep in mind though that the more power you try to get out of your standard engine the more susceptible it will be to premature engine wear, as the parts will be working under more strenuous conditions, but thats not to say that it will blow up in 10 000kms. do it right the first time and you shouldnt have any problems.
AVO's turbo kits are designed 2 be run on stock internals and modified internals. Whatever your request is they will deliver. You should be able 2 run approx 8-9psi safely on stock internals. Mine was on 9psi. Best part about this kit is that its completely legal and has been EPA tested and past. No other kit sold in AU provides this documentation.

*looks around*.. wow way to prove me wrong i would have thought at the mention of the word "hondata" would have brought out world war 3.. but anyway.. honda'c can be boosted reliably and safe and still give really good fuel economy.. its not so much the kit its more the tuner.. ecu plays a part in it.. but tuner more important.. ie even if you got the most expensive mofo of the ecu out there and still have a bad tuner your car wont perform or run well..
i personaly like the idea of a turbo dc5R.. sounds wicked!...
just go with safe boost like 6 or 7 =P. thats even 5 psi is enough with the right tune to give you a heart thumpin =P
I have plenty of DC5r customers running 13.5 and 13.8 all around Australia with just Intake, exhaust and headers, and Hondata k100. So add on a correctly designed turbo setup to the equation and you will be much faster. As for reliability, I only know 2 DC5r turbo cars currently in Australia, and at least 100 overseas, reliability and boost prove to be no issue as long as everything is designed and tuned correctly

People say run a safe amount of boost of say 6-8psi, but what can u do to the internals so that you can safely run more like 12 psi? :honda:

You can do anything to the internals ! thats what I design and do each day ;-) for clients around Australia.
Like iv said before i wanta build a 600kw k20 engine.... running stupid amounts of boost.
if i can get 450kw+ out of a b16 engine.... 600kw out of a k20 should be a nice challenge.
Remember 9psi on one turbo setup makes different power and has different stress on the engine to 9psi on a different setup !! psi is't just psi.... call me n ill explain in.. kinda hard concept to gasp via the internet !
The problem is once you go past the limit of stock internals… your forced to build your engine. Build it correctly and don’t cut any corners and there’s no reason why you can’t run 45psi of boost !

ive boosted up to 1.3BAR on my k20a2, uhh that wasnt safe though, stock internals and all, i normally run about 0.7Bar max nowdays, engine is fine for now, hopefully it dont blow anytime soon..

now:
.7 bar = 10.1526416 pounds per square inch
thats a fair bit of boost ay. im definately goin to look into the AVO kit next year. boosted dc5r's are unreal, :honda:

LOL yeh google works wonders, anyway it was quite alot of boost, the mechanic i took it to couldnt believe that my boost gauge read 1.3 bar Peak, and he was shaking his head at me.. :rolleyes: lol i got advised that about 10psi or 0.7 bar peak would be decent and safer so thats wat i got it set to nowdays.Quote:

yah, well i bought the car from dealer he had told me it had internals done, but when i took it for service, they called the tuner who tuned my car and they said it had no internals, so, i prefer to be safe, just incase i blew my engine. lol ill investigate further when i get chance, need some drivetrain mods next though, flywheel n clutch.. lookin into the toda ones atm.
