a pod filter is the circular type filter you see people replace their airbox with entirely. They do this because it can breathe better than the airbox as it's (shall we say, vented area) has more surface area than a flat panel filter (which is found inside your airobx). I choose K&N filters because they breathe really well, but others use brands such as blitz, i dont know about their performance as i dont have one. On my car I have a K&N pod filter, it cost about 150 to buy all the parts, which i fitted myself. An alternative to this is buying a panel filter to replace your factory panel filter inside your airbox. This is not only cheaper, but also more 'legal' lol. Because the civic gli is low hp, wether you choose to use a pod or panel filter wont affect it greatly.
