Hey buddy,
IMHO, having driven 91 SX a fair few times and seen the "power" of a GLi EK hatch, i'd have to say you'd get well and truly chopped.
Assuming you're both around the same level as drivers, you'd get minced both off the line and down the road....
THe SX's are pretty heavy cars, but 2.2L and around the 105ish kw mark at the very least... they've got plenty of kick off the line and do decently at higher revs too...
AFAIK however your Gli has very little power, and although considerably lighter, i think won't be able to keep up. :(
Best bet, try and get a great launch first up and rev out each gear with smooth gear changes...... u never know... but mid 3rd u still might be close even with him........

but i have chopped a stock 91 celica in my slammed ek vti-r hatch at a set of lights :D i only have a air filter!
ek gli 96kw stock :P not sure bout the celica

Yep the VTi has 96kw Stock, GLi 88kw & the VTi R around 115 Kw
All i know is the 1989-93 Celica SX's are slow asssssssssssssssssssssss.
My mate got an auto one and he lost to my other mate wich was a '92 Toyota Pasoe. Those celicas are only for look i reckon. However, GT-4 different story...hehehehe
But I don't know anything about ur Civic Gli EK sorry... :(
I dunno mate... my friend owns a 5spd 93 SX...2.2L with plenty of torque IMO...
DC2 VTiR would definitely beat it... but they really got some go....
Not sure about the auto versions, and have never been in a Paseo, but those SX's are definitely not "only for look i reckon"...... lol
hi ppl ! i finalli got the chance to race my friend and it was a draw ! we had 2 races ... up and then down the strip ... he had 1 passenger in the car in the first race and he lost ... and then the passenger jumped into my car and he won ... guess that weight counts alot ! :) well ive been thinkin' about getting an exhaust system for my civic ... heard 2 1/4" are good for non turbo cars? any suggestions ? thx 4 ur contribution :o

Yeah joneblaze... I really do think that you overestimate these Celica's man... no offence aight? I just really think that they're not that quick. And the engine displacement doesn't count for anything as a 1.8L can beat a 5.0L. Don't be fooled by the engine displacement. :D
And I thought that the EK VTi were SOHC VTEC??
hehe.. oh no no, the displacement wasn't the main arguing point for myself. Just the fact that when i drive the SX, it feels alot torquier than my GSi or VTiRs i've driven....
But i suppose the Hondas need to be revved :)
I still can't believe a GLi beat an SX...hehe...sorry not meaning to bag ur car buddy. If you beat him then well done and well driven! It's always satisfying to beat cars which are "rated" and touted more than yours. ;)
You should race the SX again, which no passengers and see how you go!

EK Vti isn't SOHC VTEC. They stopped putting the SOHC VTEC motors in the EK models.

Just to add......The Celica IS Torqy, but torque isn't everything.
That said, i've raced my friends ~94/95 model Celica (same Camry engine) and he kills me off the line (about 1 - 1.5 body lenghts).......but after that he doesn't pull away much more.
Win, Isn't an EJ (sedan EK) a SOHC Vtec, as is the "ek" coupe Vti....
THe EK Vti coupe is SOHC-VTEC (98kW if i remember correctly), but the EK vti Sedan isn't SOHC VTEC.

mmmm from experience celicas are slooooowwwww.theyre only 100kw i think.. but toooo heavy. ive run so many in my teg LS.. B18A (96kw).. ive never lost... same as the v6s camrys which are even faster than the celicas..

his just got exhuast
funny thing was that in 1st i was already down 1 length and then after 2nd i started catching up bad and once in 3rd...he was half behind and then 4th i was more than 1 car
i dunno why but we did 4 more runs and the same results kept happening..
