lowered civics with big wheels: do you all have the same prob as me?

got my eg lowered, its got 17s.. now everytime im cornering, the wheels would rub the guard. Been searching on the topic and saw that camber kits are the only way to fix the problem but are also expensive. Can anyone give a rough estimate on how much a kit will cost for the EG hatch. Im not exactly sure what a camber kit does and why it helps, can anyone explain that also. Ive got some idea but i need a better discription in my head :)

also what are roll guards? and how does it compare to camber kits including price.

Im not sure a camber kit will help here. A camber kit is a piece that allows you to adjust the camber if there are no camber adjustments that were on the car. Ie on an ek you can't adjust the front camber so a camber kit is sometimes needed.

Rolling the guards pushes back some of the metal on the car so that wheels etc can fit.

rolling guards is when u literally roll the guards and give more space for the wheels to turn..

i had this problem with my civic and 17s......

this might be due to ur wheel offset making the wheel hang out afair bit.

i dont think a camber kit will help in ur situation since this will only deal with negative camber!

u could roll ur guards or change ur rims to some that are tucked in nicely under the guard!!

are you sure its hitting the guards and not the inner wheel arch? ive got rolled gaurds,17's and had koni adjustables with king springs,did the same thing.The rear springs are too soft(body roll) im using Bilstein coilovers with swift 10kg rear springs now,it doesnt hit at all,very stiff ride tho.

Depending how much you lowered your Civic... what you also need to look at is wheel offset and wheel width.

Hondas 'usually' like EF, EG, EK have a 4 stud wheel with 40-42 offset (distance between the inner edge of the wheel and the edge of the holding plate). If you use wheels with an offset smaller than that your wheel will stick out past the car, if you use an offset bigger than that - it will rub the inner guards.

Wheel size (width) comes equally as important in that. You don't want to get anything wider than a 7inch. so a 17x7, 16x7 once you hit 18s you're battling having a wheel thats too wide even at 7inches because of the height.

Lowering of the car is probably the biggest issue here, If you go too low even a 14inch wheel will rub.

So - in conclusion: LOWering and Wheelsize/offset all needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a wheel.

Tell us how big your wheels are, whats the offset, and how low you have taken your civic and we can work out what seems to be the issue... generally

u can cut the inner wheel arch out if u really want......or raise ur car

i have the same problem and i am still trying to figure it out. I'm thinking of getting my guards rolled back to see if it helps. I think the guards is the hard plastic that sits above the wheel, under the arch. Correct me if i'm wrong. Apparantly it protects the car body from rocks or dirt that flicks up from the wheel.

Guard is refered to as the actual fender arch - guard rolling refers to rolling the edge of the fender guard.
If you run your finger along on the inside of the actual fender arch you will notice that the metal is horizontal - when a wheel is fitted that is too big or car is lowered too much - the outside wall of the tyre will rub on that edge - causing damage to not only the tyre but also the wheel.

Inner wheel arch is the black painted stuff begind the wheel... sometimes wheels rub on that.

i suggest u get your guards rolled, it doesnt cost much!
if u know a panel beater, even better! get them to do it for free.

So lets say if it rubs the inside area (dunno what its called), cant u get spacers to make it not as "inside" u know what i mean.

Spacers are illegal - you can have them but if they find out at the pits you do - be prapared to have to take them out.

the best way to avoid rubbing is: research wheel size/offset and car height and you won't have a problem ... if you still get wheel rubbing on the inside then just don't make a full lock! - do a 10 point turn instead of a 3 point hehehe!

I had the exact same problem. All I did was cut the black plastic back a bit, and now the wheel only scrubs when I hit a bump mid-corner. I haven't rolled my front guards either, but I am looking at getting the guards pumped a bit.

yep i had the same problem when i had my 18's on my EG, it was mainly getting rubbing on the inner arch.

I went to get the guards rolled but was told by the panel beater that it wouldn't make too much of a difference, so i didn't bother. instead i replaced them with some 16's and my car sits alot lower now, looks great still and doesn't scrub.

Sorry to hijack, but hypothetically, there is this car which i willl buy rght, its stock wheels are 15x6.5 with 38-40 ish offset but the new wheels i want are 17x7 with +30 offset. Its a nissan maxima. Will I have any problems in terms of rubbing? I went to this website and it said theres 1mm less on the inside and an extra 16 mm protruding..cant remmeber exactly.

Yes, i have that problem as well. I went to roll the guards but it did not fix the problem. Every time i corner hard, there will be a little rubbing sound. Well, i work out a way to fix this problem. ...Rub it until it is not rubbing any more! ... Now when i take my wheels off, i could see there a hole in the inside part of the wheel wall. I think soon i will have no unly rubbing sound. ...hahha

Are you planning on lowering the car as well?
I think your best bet would be to see what other owners (with maximas) put on there cars. That at least gives you some guide to what wheel to put on.

The other thing to mention (which I didnt see discussed in this thread) is tyre size.

note: it only started rubbing when i got it lowered

i got 17s and pretty lowered .. and nope i hardly ever scrape my tyres on the guards, i got hard springs.. even with a full load in the car..

i have the same prob, i have 18" by 7.5 lowered btween 3.5" to 4" adjustable springs) standard shocks though (yes dodgy) the only rubbing i have is at full lock, scrubbing on inner gaurd and a bit on the outer.. oh my gaurds are lipped.. theres not much u can really do unless u wanna send huge amounts to customise shit.. its just a thing u have to put up with to look good hahaha

haha ur 17s got issues, i got 18s on slammed bilstein coilovers.... lol well its the misses car but i drive it since sh got no licence,

u gotta rev the car up reversing and cornering coz the whell rubs so hard it stops that car

How does your cars even move? with 17 or 18 inch wheels?

i got 205 width tyres and there the wrong profile so they sit IN my rear guards. BUT coz the wheels are the righ proflile (there fat fives) they actually sit comfoartably in the guards with no rubbing... even with threee people in the back

Im gettin 18's which are worth 2k for 800. new with new wikid tracks. these fit a datsun 1600 and im wonderin if they will fit my 94 eg. unlowered... please oh god pleasee tell me yes.... if you are god say yes)

roll your guards and it shouldn't rub

Depends how wide the tyres are and if they share the same stud pattern...other than that, it shouldn't be a problem.

i've got 17s, and the only rubbing i get is when i corner.. They are 17x7.. I think it may have something to do with my front shocks.. they suck!!! its lowered 2" at the front and 1.5" at the back.. I heard Pedders offers a free 14 point suspension check. Is this true???? Might have to get it checked out.

Just accept if you want a low civic with 17's/18's you have to do 6 point turns from now...
You will get used to it..

If you want to free up a little more room take it to a panel shop and get them to pump the gaurds out..
