Costs of Engines

Hello All,
Trying to way up prices here,
I am going to do a engine in conversion my 99 ek1 hatch.
I want to know how much these half cuts go for these days.
b16a
b18c5
b18c7
h22a
I want to build my car for top end performance.
Which do you think will be the best choice?
I just want to know your guys opinions
This may have been covered before but i think there has been a lil bit of price change between then and now.

I am also having a lil problem with my car.
Sometimes when i start it up it will idle at like 1400-1600 rpm until i tap the accelarator and then it drops to 900. It really only does this when its cold is this normal. Also sometimes it will idle very roughly at like 700-800 rpm when its warm. Is this normal? common sense would tell me that when its cold it would but just checking to make sure.

Nice car :thumbsup: I've got the same one ;) 'cept of course the weight reduction of a missing window. I was lookin into doin the same thing to my car, & I decided on a b18c. IMO more torque, still more fuel effecient than 2.2L... Sorry, I don't know prices tho. Which b18 was from the integra type r?

c7 is from a typeR
c5 is from a vti-r

Go with a b18c (of some variant).

Or think fresh.

?? 2.2 has more torque than 1.8 ............

C5 is not vti-r.

C2 is vtir.

C5 is JDM b18c or also known as just B18c on teh block.

C7 is AUDM B18cR.

thanks anyways, so the prices wont fluctuate much on the age of my car? thats what i am worried about finding a 99+ half cut or will it be more difficult to find? yeah i am thinking of eventually going down the forced induction route but not for a year or so. Weight reduction is my first priority.
Is there a difference in the weights of the b18's and the H22? will it make much difference in handling?

h22a will **** up the balance of your hatchy, good if you want to build it to go fast down a straight line but not practical for circuit or even just daily driving. Cornerings a bitch.
b16a, or b18c are your best bet. But really b18's can be hard to find.

apparently not that much diff
not much weight difference either..

and if that is the case u can always stiffer front springs in the front to counter the weight problem

any engine mounts needed for b18's of all variants?

if u have an EK, you can use the EK4 mounts which will accomodate for b16'a and b18c's

No direct knowledge, but today I was talkin to a Honda mechanic & he reckons vti or vtir engine mounts will fit... (We were talkin about b18's)

vtir = dohc b-series

d seriies mounts wont fit b-series engines.

^^ what mounts are needed then? and how much are they?

for your car, ek4 mounts will fit in b16a, b18c itr/vti-r

thanks a bunch, if you bought a half cut of a integra vtir or r are the brakes going to work with my drums at the rear or will i have to do a conversion there aswell?

you can reuse some of the vti sohc vtec mounts when putting the b series motor in your car. what you will need is the rear engine bracket and the passenger side mount from the vtir civic. this is when putting the b series motor into an EK.

or if you bought an integra type r half cut then you can swap over the crossmember. this will eliminate the need to purchase the rear bracket. once again this is for the EK swap.

if you are getting an integra half cut and putting that into an EG then you dont need to buy any mounts the integra mounts will fit.

if you are going to replace you drums with disc brakes. then you will have to upgrade your master cylinder as the brake pedal will become slushy if you dont.

No, that means he was right, doesn't it? I meant I wasn't sure which one he said, I think it was ek4, which is vtir. :) I think he's done engine transfers before, he was tellin me about a twin turbo civic he was workin on a while ago...

where did you get these prices from?

if anyone here has put a b18c type r or vtir into a ek tell me how it went? come across any problems?

B18C1 - US spec GSR (VTi-R)
B18C2 - AUS spec VTi-R
B18C3 - Spoon SiR-G / JDM
B18C4 - UK spec VTi
B18C5 - US spec ITR / some sources refer to exist as JDM as well
B18C6 - Euro spec ITR
B18C7 - AUS spec ITR

B18C - JDM ITR and JDM SiR-G/VTi-R only way to tell is if you look at the head and inlet manifold

Lots of different variants as you can see

what about hybrids(i think that is the right term) like a b20b with a b16a head? any special mounts needed for those or will ek4 mounts be all that is needed because its b series

Spend the money on boosting your D :) you'll be much happier with the performance gain vs cost

dont get me wrong i want to go fast, but i want a vtec engine in my bay looking really nice well presented and sounding tuff tuned with some nice n/a goodies. if i want a turbo i will go nissan.

i want an itr jdm in my 88 crx =)
no matter what cost
my current goal..
btw if u put h22 into a crx..i know that it wont be located where the original engine is..
therefore disturbing the weight distribution across the car..
u might come acrossthis with ur car.. so yeh.. ask online performance.. they've played with h22a conversions..

Well if you want vtec do a mini-me then boost! win win! Besides having a tiny little engine still. I personally think it's a waste of money doing a swap. But good luck with the path you choose man. Be keen to see it when it's up and running :)

stay with n/a, there is nothing like seeing a n/a car embarrass a turbo car

sorry to bring the thread up again. But i want to know the difference between the top end preformance of a b18c2 and a h22a. I cant decide between the two? i am looking for more straight line preformance. Is the weight difference that much, or could some suspension work fix up the weight over the front wheels of the h22a. I know this isnt going to mean much in a straight line but i dont want to go into a wall driving through the streets. PLEASE HELP ME.
