Honda Civic B18C

A fellow forum member and a friend of mine is thinking about buying the following car off a friend. what do u guys reckon? should he buy it?

93 Honda Civic GL

pros:
B18C engine with front brake conversion from a vtir integra
new metallic black paint with a gold pearl
gold 17' neo lenso rims
full body kit including sideskirts, front and rear bar. (not too outrageous,
looks subtle. really nice and clean)
crx bucket seats
full 2.5' exhaust
4-2-1 headers
pod filter
microtech + controller
gold 17' neo lenso rims
alarm system with window lifters, engine warmer.
black window tints

cons:
rear drum brakes
no air conditioning unit
the interior was a mess, dodgy green colour painted terribly on roof and all plastic moulding

the engine has travelled under 80k kms
odometer reads 160k km.

the price... cheap as dirt $12,000

this is his situation:
He has little driving experience and is worried that if he damages the car he wont b able to pay the repair bills.
comprehensive insurance is out of the question as its unreasonable priced.
having no a/c really bugs him. and doesnt want to pay too much to get one installed.
If he doesnt get this car, he will most likely get an Si civic or an Si prelude to the value of 10k anyway.

i reckon this is a heaps good deal.
taking into account he can source interior parts for very cheap.

and would any1 know how much an a/c unit costs to install?

When I bought my teg I was contemplating whether to get a type r or vtir, I was positive I wanted a/c and a sunroof so I went vtir. I don't even use a/c, since these jap cars have little torque, slows them down quite significantly so I hardly use a/c. Sunroof on the otherhand I use even at night :)

Is he gonan use the car as a daily driver?

If so just get the Civic Si, i think teh civic b18 will cost more to maintain than the other cars.

Also is this your friends first car? I wouldnt suggest to get a car thats got a swap till he learns more about it.

I would rather buy a nice Civic Si over that GL. My 2 cents :)

its not a bad deal but make sure ur mate knows that theres going to be minro probs with it, that will start to shit him up the wall in the long run

Get a slow car for your first car. You will thank yourself (and your wallet) later.

Fast cars are expensive to run usually and if u typically have a fast car its usually gotta look good too. so if you're at the shops and its get hit its far more expensive than mummy's Datsun :)

Yeah, he will be using the car to get to and from work.

Its also his first car.

I would have thought that a dohc vtec engine would have been better in the long run as it could handle much more of a beating than the d16 from a si. And as we have friends with all fast hondaz, the car will get an occasional beating.
I sorta just see this car as a really fast integra in a nice looking civic shell :)

Maintenence wise mechanically, what would b the difference between this car and a vtir integra?

My friend is also a wannabe ricer + racer. haha
so if he was to get an si civic, he'd be thrashing the shit outta it! and he'd prolly get wheels and springs which will bring the total spending price to close to that of this civic.

you could always install the ac later, and re-paint the interior... rear drums arnt that much of a problem either... plenty of stock cars running around with them lol... look at the pro's list compared to the cons list.... neg a bit and youll prob get the price down a lil more as well :D not a bad deal overall though.

Either way i really wouldn't bother. As Ben - i think it was - posted in the other thread regarding this, unless you're certain of the condition and history of the hybrid car it's really not worth your while buying it. Too many problems and possible black hole to pour your money into fixing.....

Basically...any car with an engine and other parts not designed for it is going to run into problems prematurley regardless of "care taken" etc. As simply as "b18c 's bolt into Egs " etc... you are taking twice or more the risk of just buying a clean stocker car.
How ? For one , one chassis of one under-stated car plus over-powered engine that (no doubt) came from a life of hard work , another is the "new" braking package to go with , the next is teh fuel system and ofcourse computer etc. While each can come from an entire halfcut - each being usually from a different car ( and entirely diff. model sometimes!) is of diff. age, diff. spec and diff. condition. NOT to add , the high risk of accident damage , IE from a written off car etc...

With a 2nd hand STOCK car though, everything is working in union and has for the entire life of the vehicle.It is easy to check one part, and work out if it is in need of replacment etc.
There is no way of telling with a Hybrid car.

When you buy, for example, a DC2 VTiR with a B18C stock from the factory HONDA has fitted that engine for you. WHen you buy a hybrid/engine swap.... umm.. WHO'S done your work and labour? And where has everything come from? lol... just increases level of dodginess. And as Ben previously mentioned alot of the time any viable (or sometimes NON viable) shortcuts are taken.....
Just my opinion. no hard feelings. It'd suck for anyone to buy a nice car then have it break down/need hardcore maintenance due to shite prior workmanship. Good luck in assisting ur mate in his car search. :)

The eg civic and dc2 model integra's are built on the same platform. The underbody construction for both cars are identical, only the integra has a sturdier upper structure due to its aerodynamic design.
With the integra, engine and transmission side mounts are positioned on the front longitudinal frame members. The civic also share these similar engine mounts.

now this i really need u to explain. Because this is all that i could put together from what u've said... it is that by modifying any car to improve its braking system, or fuel system or computer is taking an extreme risk as they do not work in "union" with your other stock engine components.

im assuming u mean that with a completely stock car, u know when to replace parts according to the kms on the odometer. Such as the oil, filters, clutch, timing belt, brake pads, etc.
well i dont see how its impossible to tell with a hybrid car. clutch slips, change it. brakes alarm, change it. filters dirty, change it. Roughly estimate kms run with the new engine and change the timing belt accordingly.

Agreed. If the engine conversion had been done properly (which should be the main deciding factor in the purchase of a hybrid vehicle) any problems which may arise with the engine or transmission etc. would be to the same occurance as those problems associated with a vtir integra with a similar engine.

do a rear disc conversion, (few hundred), upgrade the interior cheaply (up to 2k) get part of the car resprayed if necessary (up to 3k), sounds like a pretty mad deal especially if it's b18c, if it wasnt for that motor no chance

i fixed the entire interior cost me $2400. The whole interior including dash,seats etc is a complete soft Tan leather
and i installed the aircon, cost me $470

Ive just put out an extra $3500 for the entire sound system. Getting it installed next week
right now the car flies
i chopped a 200sx series II the other day
i think my car is fastest n/a on the road at the moment
any1 wanna go for a run for their money.

forged internals and had to resleeve the piston chambers coz the blocks aluminium

i got
new extractors, i threw out the old ones and got mugen 4 into 1 headers.
forged pistons, forged rods.
port and polished the head.
bore and stroked the block to a 2.0L
