DIY S2000 start button into 97 Prelude

This DIY shows how to install a S2000 start button to a 5th Gen Prelude, you can use this method to install the S2000 button to any other Honda or Car. You dont even have to use a S2000 button.

If installing to any other car other than a 5th Gen Prelude, Check the wires for yourself to make sure you have found the correct wires. DO NOT GO BY THIS DIY COLOUR CODES.

MAKE SUR YOU HAVE YOUR STEREO CODE, as you will be needing it

AIM: Install a Start button


Required:

Test light
Multi Meter
Philips head Screw driver
File
Double sided tape
Soldering Iron
Solder
Electrical Tape
S2000 Start Button
Automotive Relay
Automotive Relay Base
Wire
Floppy drive power supply connector
A cable tire or two
Brains, at least some.


STEP: 1


If you are unsure or not very confident handling live wires, DISCONNECT YOur BATTERY prior to working on your car.



- need to remove the stereo facia

Grab the facia and pull it out towards you.

STEP: 2

remove the stereo, 4x screw. 2 each side of the stereo ( see red arrows bellow ). Pull the Stereo forwards and unplug the antenna and conector, you may also have to unplug the CD changer if you have one.

STEP: 3

Remove the cancer stick lighter, turn the back of the barrel clockwise if your looking at it the same way as the photo. It actually gets undone counter clockwise, depends how you look at it while turning. ( see red arrow bellow )
also unplug the connector for the lighter.

STEP: 4


time to fit start button to the cigaret lighter housing. Start by making a template of the switch. DO NOT RUSH this part.

outline the switch on some hard paper, then cut it out as show in the pic bellow.

make sure the template fits your switch before you butcher your lighter housing.

mark out the housing with your template, make sure you have allowed for the grooves the switch has. as shown below by the red arrows.

now this bit is IMPORTANT

file out the housing in order to fit the S2000 start button, keep test fitting the button to make sure you dont overdo it as you file the housing away. Also do not apply to much pressure to the housing as it not very strong.

you want the switch to fit in to the housing snug. So it does not move at all and is as flush as you can get it on the front. This is the way the switch is mounted and sits there.

DO NOT RUSH this part.

STEP: 5

Time to do some wiring up. Undo the bottom dash cover, and locate the conector that has the start signal and constant power.

look in the direction under the dash where the two red arrows meet in the Pic bellow

you want to find this

this connector will have two wires

a white wire ( wht )
and a Black wire with a white trace ( blk/wht )

unplug it and lower it down so you can work on it under the dash area.






This is how we are going to wire the S2000 Start Button

get out your relay and relay base

unsheeth the sheeth of the two wires and expose the wires so you can work on them


NOTE : if your car has an aftermarket alarm or Immo and they have cut the starter wire to imobilise the car you must wire the relay after the immobiliser relay.

do not extend the wires from the contact side of the relay base, as they are heavy guage and you do not want to create a weak point in the start system,

- wire pin 30 side of the relay to the white wire, solder the wire well and when it has cooled down, wrap it up well with good quality electrical tape.

- now wire pin 87 of the relay to the Black/yellow wire. solder the wire well and when it has cooled down, wrap it up well with good quality electrical tape.

- if you want to disable the ignition switch from starting the car, cut the wire that goes from the switch to the yellow wire from the relay. for example in the picture below cut the blk/yel wire where the yellow arrow is pointing to it, above the join. This is between the relay and the IGN switch. You do not have to disable it, what ever floats you boat, its up to you if you only want the S2k button to start the car or both.

if you do cut it make sure you insulate it with electrical tape at both ends.

time to wrap up the yellow wire from the relay base and your connections up to make them look pretty.

Now its time to wire up the relay coil to the S2000 Switch

locate the IGN wire. its Black with a yellow trace ( blk/yel ) and a good ground.

look at you under dash fues box and locate the IGN wire. ( right red arrow on pic bellow )

- now join a wire to that and run it to the lighter location over by the stereo.

- now you have to find a good ground point. ( red arrow in pic bellow )

- and wire it to the white wire on the relay base pin 86. make sure you solder joint is neat and then wrap it up with a good quality electrical tape.

- also wire a ground wire over to the lighter location over by the stereo.

- run a wire from the last wire you will have on your relay base. pin 85 white wire to the lighter location over by the stereo. solder it to pin 85 of the relay base. Again good solder join and wrap it up with electrical tape.


you can now wrap up as much of the relay wiring as you can and cable tie it up under the dash out of the way.


Now you will have 3 wires you ran to the lighter location over by the stereo. see pic bellow.

get your floppy drive power cable connector, find out the best way you want it to fit in the back of the s2000 start switch and wire up the wires to the wires you ran in the following order. see the schematic above


pin 3 of the S2000 Switch goes to Ground
pin 4 of the S2000 Switch goes to the blk/yel wire IGN
pin 5 of the S2000 Switch goes to pin 85 of the relay.


the floppy drive power cable colours dont come into play at all, just ignore the colours.



STEP: 6

make the lighter hole a bit bigger, dont over do it

STEP: 7

add some double sided tape as shown by the red arrows in the pic bellow

now press on the S2000 switch in the lighter housing. Also plug the floppy drive power connector into the back of the S2000 switch making sure you line up the pins corectly to how they are ment to be wired.


now fit the stereo and the dash facia in revers to how you removed them.

reconnect your battery if you disconnected it. Test your car starts from the normal ignition switch if you did not disable it.

now test the S2000 start button

Your done.


You will notice at nigh when you turn the IGN on the words ENGINE START will illuminate with out turning on your parkers.

this is by design.

Since it takes over the start position at the key, I would say that you have to hold it down til it starts, just like the S2000.

If you have been in an S2000, you do the same process to start the car. Put the key in, turn to "on", and then press the start button. So this DIY makes your prelude exactly the same. Yes.. it's for wank factor.

It would be nice if it were next to the key entry, but hey, nice work too...

Just out of interest, does turning the key to the next click work too, or do you need to press the button now?

yeah mounting it near the key would of been better, ( like the S2000 ) but there is nowhere to put it on a Prelude on that side.

you have the option to disable the factory start signal from the key, this is described in the DIY on how to do it. you can have both if you wish.

my comment earlier man was why have the engine start down there when u can replace ur current ignition barrel with just the button looks more pro that way

Now i want a visual start button.

like CRXer says, it poses a major security risk, you will loose

ignition lock of the steairng wheel,
factory immobiser


you will have to install a switch for the ACC and IGN,

just a quick question la, the wiring you mention, tis the same in a 4th gen lude i take?

its not my prelude preludacris, but your right its a very nice ride.


as for the 4th Gen, the schematic will work on any car, the colour code is ment for a 5th gen but you will find its a Honda standard, just test with a test light before you commit to a particular wire.

just installed mine based on ECU-MAN threat + some advise from him directly through pm.Thanks dude.

for Civic FD can use JDM civic type-r engine start button and panel.
yes, direct bolt, no modification at all, guarantee !!!

my bad... they are working now

i have my integra running completely keyless. the car unlocks by either proximity, when the remote is close to the car it unlocks, or i type in a code on the touchpad on the front windscreen, then get in and push the engine start button to turn on the ignition, then hold the engine start button to start the engine.

Sáll rather basic DC wiring shit realy, Clint I was going to do that type thing to with close prox readers for entry but to take the factory immobiliser and ignition out puts to much at risk imo, Im even putting in a removable key for the ground on my starter so when I leave it somewhere dodgy i know for a fact the thing aint going anywhere!
Clint post up a pic of your windsheild keypad! it intreags(?) me how this could be at all hidden!

my integra didnt have an immobiliser to take out.. i guess the earlier model hondas didnt have much in the way of security, no factory immobiliser or remote entry. so my car as is is much much more secure than it was out of factory, and in addition to that i have several immobilisers at various different points and security devices, and an alarm.

when you say you're putting a key on the starter ground, do you mean the starter positive or engine ground? cutting the positive would be effective, but the engine has multiple ground straps so you would have to isolate each one of then, but i would be wary of doing that as potentially you could damage something. is there is some small piece of metal going between the engine and body, or maybe a engine sensor that is grounded by both the engine ground and a wire ground going back to the ecu, you will cause big damage. for example the second one i mentioned, if you disconnect the engine ground, and there is a sensor which is grounded both by engine ground and a ground wire running to the ecu, when you crank the engine over, instead of pulling 300 amps from the engine ground strap, it will attempt to pull those 300 amps through that sensor, its wiring and the ecu.. very quickly melting or smoking something. so i would be very cautious about doing that, placing the key breaker on either battery ground or starter positive would be fine.

this is the keypad on thew windscreen, its not as noticable when looking at the car as it is in that pic. when the car is locked the centre of it alternately flashes red and blue.

hahah Boy george u went to town on that board lol, yeah your right I had drawn it all up in a schematic and forgot the point that the starter is somewhat grounded via the block then through sensors and smaller ground cables, Ill do it via the starters pos terminal or similar.. whered u pull that keypad from?? I might just look in to it muchly! is that resin the PSB sits on??? gotta hope nothing goes bang in there! lol
that from a kit or are u an electro head?

thats no kit lol, cant be purchased anywhere or anything like it that i know of. i had to design it all from scratch. i started out with a list of things i needed the circuit to do, to mention a few, turn ignition on when button pushed, ignition off with button pushed again, starter turns if button is held down. from there worked out in my mind how all the requirements were going to tie into together with the one button and realistic circuitry, wrote that down, and then started at the first requirement designing the circuit to meet that need, and then continued thru to i think the 9th thing, by the end, a few nights later had a working model on a breadboard, then soldered those components onto a circuit board, tested it working and then placed the circuit in a special non-corrosive, non conductive resin for a few reasons, protects everything from shortcircuit, corrosion, the lack of a PCB lol, it stops any components from moving and either shorting, breaking from vibration/stress and whatever else, basically freezes the circuit, if it works now it will work forever once in resin (other than normal component failure after a few hundred thousand or millions hours of use :p

the keypad is part of the immobiliser/alarm system i installed recently, that immobiliser also is the one that controls the proximity so that the car unlocks when i come within range it.

bit of both, was from a young age a hobby, then as i got into cars at 17 when i got a licence it became a hobby/business making total closure circuits for the windows on opel cars with a circuit i designed (which i had no intention to sell, as with this i just made it, but then got heaps of people asking for me to make them one, and before long was making them and selling worldwide) and now i have a jon doing an electronics apprenticeship at a gps/laser shop working with and selling/servicing laser levels, gps euipment for land levelling, road construction with graders/dozers etc, autopilot systems for tractors and other things to steer them in a straight line to name a few things.

Sorry to bumpan old thread, but anyone got ideas about where to get an s2k starter button? my local dealer wants $160 for one! its going into my dc2 so any sorta kit would help too

I should post a photo of my button, looks like a factory button, it's just next to the ignition in place where the dimmer dial was. Fits perfectly and moved the dimmer to the blank place on the left of the steering wheel. Button was about $50 off eBay

if i wanted to keep the key working and have the button do the same thing (just for peace of mind lol) is there much work? or am i better off getting an auto elec to install it

Dead simple u could do it in minutes.. Just connect the 2 wires from the button to the loom going to the ignition barrel, one to constant 12v the other to the starter wire.

Civic dashboard with engine start button

thinking of doing this mod on my car soon. just wondering if i can connect the ground wire from the relay to the handbrake switch ground wire so that only when the handbrake is applied can the car be start (circuit is complete). Is this possible and do i need to put a diode?
