How do i get an exhaust for Ek4?

Hey guys, as some of you know i own an EK4, and nowi'm saving up for an exhaust... basicaly i know wot Cats are, wot extractors are, wot mufflers are, and what piping is... thing is... i haveno idea what "CatBack" means or nething like that...

basically if i was looking to get an exhaust... thats 2 & 1/4"" (want performance and a LITTLE noise, not defect style) could i get the parts separately? cos i really hate the stock exhaust i have right now, makes no nice noise to speak of...

Like can i get a muffler first, then a high flow cat, then extractors? (and of course piping in between)...

Or does my civic come with a stock 2" exhaust and i have to get the whole set otherwise i end up with stuff thats all for 2" an di would never be able to go 2 1/4?

First off "catback" means the piping/exhaust from the cat back hence the name, if u know wat the cat and all the other stuff is u should be able to work out that u will just be getting the piping from the cat back and most prob the muffler as well. The order i would go is get the catback system first then the extractors and then the high-flow cat if there is any use. And i would think ur civic would have a smaller exhaust then a 2" and yes it would be a waste getting the muffler and all the other stuff to fit ur stock exhaust when u are better off getting the catback and working on from there.

any particular reason why you want to go 2.25 inch and not 2 inch?

you will notice that mugen only make a rear muffler for the EK4.
Mugen believe that the stock piping is good for around 200hp before it becomes a restriction.

I believe 2 inch mandrel bent piping is a good system, any higher and you'll end up losing response and low end torque

I paid $160 for my 2 1/4 catback... got a fair bit of low end out of it... lost a little up around 6000Rpm but yeah low end is awseme. I use it more than top end so it was a great move :D

Before my car used to lag up until 3000 now it kicks around 2400-2500 mark.

It will pull from 1500RPM to 3000 fairly quickly... in 5th gear. I very rarly change out of 5th ever since i had it installed.

Thats why i'd go 2 1/4. If you want more top end back get 4-2-1 extractors.

sikcvc: what exhaust did you have before??
usually when going larger u lose low end and gain top end but your is all backwards :s

I had the stock 1.5 or 1.75 what ever it is...

The exact same has happened to my mates VR, he went from 2 to 2.5 and he has HEAPS of low end and same top end. worked well for him.

are you sure about this? this is the first time I've heard of losing power at the top end by going up to a larger diameter.
also do you know if its a mandrel bent system or a press bent system? for the price I think it might be press bent.

a general rule is, get the optimal mandrel bent system, or go a quarter inch more but in press bent.
I think the mandrel bends would be better tho as it gives a smoother gas flow.

Yeh kit i heard about the mugen thing... they're big advocates of "keep it stock" piping in this area...

well i thought 2 1/4 inch would be good compromise between noise and bigger top end... any bigger and i heard that i'll start losing too much bottom end...

but yeh... 2 1/4 or 2... was going to speak to a professional about...

how much am i looking at? (for catback, + muffler) .... presuming i want some quality brand but not Spoon or nething like that... extractors i;ll get brand name... normal piping i mite just get a Lukey or Genie or something

its mandrel bent... and yeah i'm sure... my low down power has definatly increased. my high end has deminished slightly... That or its mearly expanded the points at which it gets major power... eg kicks in lower.

I'd say thats what could have happend since it does pull earlier than stock and maybe because of this it doesn't feel like it pulls as much as it did up high.

I cant explain it any other way but that.

as for the costs, Dads mate doesn't pissfart around when it comes to exhausts he knows his shit and gets stuff for the price its worth thats why i got it so cheap. Think about it... theres only one way for the pipe to go (down the channel in the chassy) its $10-20 worth of steel and with a jig mandrel bending isn't hard nor expencive... once of bends cost a fortune... Hence low price...

I want to know how you guys can justify paying such high prices.(ie $900 etc) even for headers I'm getting Tune length mandrel bent Polished 4-2-1 headers for $500ish fitted for my new engine.

anywhoo... I'm ringing the guy tomorow I'll ask him see what he says... he's been doing it for 25odd years so he knows what he's talking about.

noise is largely determined by teh number of resonators you have and what kind of muffler.

but you will find that 2.25 inch will drone a lot more than 2 inch.

i don't think you will be sacrificing any top end by going down to 2 inch over a 2.25 inch.

but anyway, get what you are comfortable with. no use getting something u dont want cos someone told you so. then later thinking "damn, i should have gone the bigger piping"

if you can afford it, always get a japanese brand name exhaust. the quality is a lot better. CUstom exhaust makers just whack some piping together and weld it.

once again, exhaust tuning is much more important in NA cars than turbo cars, and doing it incorrectly you will lose power.

Vti-R came stock with a 2" exhaust, i only changed extractors,cat and rear muffler becuase those were the most restrictive parts. Out of everything the most restrictive part was the cat

Ummm i read a huge write up on cats... the power difference between a cat and no cat on a 200sx was like .1hp or something. I mean it could be different with NA but how much different.

the s15 200sx came with a very good cat straight from the factory.
changing to a high flow cat gave minimal gains cos the stock cat was very high flow. power gains will depend on what brand of cat you change it to obviously.

i would imagine that running no cat would give a more significant power gain as that restriction would be totally removed.

Hey yeah kit sorry mate your right 2" mandrel bent is better than 2 1/4 mandrel, ross said that 2 1/4 mandrel was overkill.

I asked him if i should bother upgrading to 2" mandrel (remember more money in his poket) and he said no. 2 1/4" press bent seems to work better(i say better but i'm sure its exactly the same) since it has the flow but the restriction where its needed.

And yeah the extractors are $550 mandrel bent in polished stainless. From what ross says they're as good as any other bolt on brand... I cant judge but i trust someone whos been working with exhausts for 25 years and learnt everything he knows from someone who was sort after in the aftermarket exhaust industry.

ahhh ic. xforce eh?
do u know why he said xforce extractors work just as well as any other bolt on brand? cos they don't design and test their products themselves. Xforce copy the brand name products.
E.g. the xforce dump pipe is a direct copy of the HKS dump pipe.

they are a good price tho, you should be able to get a bargain.

I dont mind if its a direct copy... so long as its high quality/perfomance. I'm sure if it looks dodge ross would send it back.

The theory behind the design seems to work well. hope it does in practice.

Morkz,... thakns for the info... hey so if its 2" (and i've been asking around) ppl say thats way enough for a 1.6... so basically if i do muffler/extracters/cat... it'd be good? wouldnt be ne difference if my PIPING was from a cool brand name?

i'm thinking of going Lukey, but i found a mugen muffler going for 250... so might go for that

if you found a genuine twin loop mugen muffler for 250 bounce on it!
but check to see if the condition is OK shake it to see if theres anything loose inside.

I would say get a high flow cat, and cat back piping for now, and then wait around to see if there are any brand name extractors for sale on the second hand market.
its very important to get good extractors.

it all depends on what goals you have for the motor. If you eventually plan to drop in cams and other internal mods dont hesitate to go 2 1/4.

my mate has a ek4 b16 with a full ITR exhaust. and he eats other vtir civics by two car lengths. i know this cos im a victim. we did a stop start and a rolling start. the rolling start was way worse.

Get a 2.25" .....90% of aftermarket catback's are 2.25".

I feel like i lost a little low end - and gained a little high end (dunno wot ur talking about SIKCVC).....but thats the nature of the engine....why would you wanna work against its dynamics?

why? find one in the flesh and have a look at the welds. then have a look at the pipng inside, very rough. not good for making power
