[DIY]NeRV: Refresh your old and tired strips!!

Aim: To make your old and worn out door window strip, look new again.

Time: 10 minutes y0!

Required:
1x Scissor
1x Screw Driver
1x Roll of Cloth Tape (BLACK)

Info: Well I was bored and remembered that Chris (Chris_F) did this to his car, to hide the chrome bling… so I thought it was a good idea to give it a crack and see if it can make my door strip look clean and new again. So I popped down to my local Autobarn where I grabbed some Cloth Tape, which only cost $7/8 bucks. Well enough with the chit chat and lets get going with this poor mans door revival DIY style.

Step 1:
Open up your door and inside the door you will see 3 screws (EG HATCHBACK)… undo these three screws… and make sure you put them in your pocket or else you could spend quite a bit of time crawling on the grass looking for it.

Step 2:
Now once you finished unscrewing those three little screws, remove this plastic piece.. once that plastic piece is out, lift up the door/window strip and take it out *Caution* be careful when you remove it, because theres these little plastic clips that can easily break off.

Step 3:
Find yourself a nice little green patch of grass to sit your arse upon, and lay the strip on your lap… whip out the tape and slowly place it on the strip and make sure that its lined up… use your spare finger to press down the tape as you go, so it doesn’t lift up.. once the tape is on… cut off any excess tape on the edges… woot!

Step 4:
Put the strip back into the hole, once again be careful of the clips and make sure that they line up with its allocated hole. Once the strip is on, place the plastic cover back on, and screw those 3 screws back in and place and WAAALLLAHHH!!

Wasn’t that easy and cheap?? Why go and spend big bucks on replacing them, or spending time sanding them down and re-spraying them, only to get the paint peel again. Now if your after a even bigger bargain, why not get a few friends who has the same problem and get everyone to chip in for the tape! LOL… I have basically a whole role left… since it doesn’t take much tape, unless you keep screwing up and re-doing it.*which you wont* ;)

I assume the door strip is rubber right? or else you wouldve spray painted it?

there hasnt been any peeling or flaking or any signs of wear or tear on the tape, its been on for almost a week now lol

yeah the tape will peel off if you want it too, so if it gets any fading or damaged you can always peel it off and give it another fresh layer of tape.

Im not exactly too sure what the door strip is made out of, but my one has some sort of hard dry compound that i couldnt really sand off easily before painting, so i just did this instead, its basicaly the lazy mans way imo :p

I know what you mean about the paint. I painted them on my eg but could never get all the old paint off. In the end I did enough coats to even it out. This looks like a much simpler method and looks great.

My sister's Tuscon uses some kind of tape on the window trim so it isn't such a crazy idea. I've heard of people using black vinyl sticker as used by sign makers, so maybe give that a go if you want something smooth and shiny!

Paul i think you can still get brand new ones from the dealers, but i heard it was a stupid amount of money, im not too sure how much it is... i went to wreckers to find these, but like my car none were in any better condition and remember cars from wreckers are F**kd and they have most likely sat in the sun rotting away for months or years.

i just use meguires plastic restorer. Apply it after a wash. Always keeps them black and shiney.

mine are silver, down to bare metal (or whatever it is, didnt pay attention lol). There's only a little bit of black and cracked rubber left on them.

I wanna get new OEM side skirts and these at the same time from the dealership. I will put them on after a respray. Car will look like new :D

The DIY was useful for me because now i know how to pull the window strips off :D
Would have taken me a while to figure out the screws on the side. lol

Very unlucky for you. Just remember, whatevers on the car, keep it like new. There's a product for just about every part on your car. Mine have some scratches from when i bought it, but yeah, look after what you got, and make it better!!

:thumbsup: glad you enjoyed it, taking the strip off is soo simple, yet if you dont know what your doing it could be hard, i remember when i didnt know how to take it off i spent quite a bit of time crawling all over the door and un-screwing any screws/nuts or bolts in sight, but eventually learnt that it only took 3 screws for things to come apart lol

I would have used black (or Carbon Fibre lol) Vinyl wrap personally. Cloth tape seems like it wont last too long

oh its lasted till now, only problem is due to heat it shrunk abit at the ends.
