semi slick advice

im looking for some advice on semi slicks. its time to get 4 new tyres so im looking at semi slicks this time round. i own an ef8 with 15' mr5 wheels. the current tyres are yokohama C Drives in 195/55/15. so far i havnt had any grip problems with these tyres except they havnt lasted me more than 5 months before being defectable. then again i havnt had any other tyres on the car so i have nothing to compare them to.

the car is a daily driver and i am looking at some track time in the future, both circut and drag. not looking to spend a huge amount just yet but any advice and feedback would be appreciated from those in the know.

semi's won't last you long at all driving daily. hit edward up for a set of Advan AD07's if you want some gansta street tyres that'll last longer than semi's.

Spare set of rims with Semi's when you go to track is the best idea. If your car is a Daily, then as Barefoot says its not worth it Getting Semis. Semis are much softer so will wear much quicker than Street tyres. Plus the tread depth on Semis are very little compared to streeters.

Have a look under the Traders Section, "Max-Hondapower" for the AD07's. :thumbsup:

if u had no probs with the c drive

id suggest the a drive in the yokohama

or bridgestone g3

if u hardly go on track i prob wouldnt suggest semis coz they will get "hard" over a while of no use... and they will "dry" up. u wil end up havnig to rape them hard to get use of them again...

or you could even get a semi compound street tyre

toyo ra1 ?

similar compound is ok but again you will shred them up fast if u use heaps.. coz they are a semi style compound.

Do you mean the A048? If so, they are proper semi-slicks, and from what I've heard, they are good. Not really suitable for daily driving.

I believe the RT215's are no more, and replaced by the RT615's.

I am getting some Falken sports azenis semi slicks for my car and plan to run them everyday
They aren't that expensive, the rear ones wouldn't really get worn out and I would just be changing the front ones every say 20,000km which judging by how much the car gets driven means every 2 years! yay!

i saw the ad07's for 200 each from max hondapower. they have some good reviews and are recommended by a fair few in the tyre review thread fairly often.

spetz, what sort of price and where abouts are u looking at these falken sports azenis from? if its local here then perhaps we can but 8 at a good price. i dont really wanna have to call you, u know that right? i think i need a spare set of rims to keep 2 sets of tyres..

you may want to very careful using semi-slicks on the street, they can be dangerous and i personally dont recomend on the street for safety reasons.
They still require a bit of heat to be effective compared to a street tyre, and if the road is greasy or wet they wont be good at all.
From past experience not a good idea unless you are smart about it and responsible

A friend uses bridgestone semi's and it's fine in the wet

Even though I would not recomend semis in the wet. Semis are fine in the wet and I was surprised in how they good griped. The only problem is when you have puddles or sheets and sheets of water on the road. Aquaplaining becomes a problem and if you hit a puddle the car grips to one side. This is obvious to the tread design (or lack of it to shed water). And instead of dispersing the water, it is trapped (damed) up in front of the tyre. :thumbsup:

remeber there are different types of semi slicks. SOme are for drag racing, some are for track (Like alot mentioned in this thread) and some are for just a general better feel.

i bought them in january and by august they were probably to worn to pass rego here in the act but definantly were not causing me any concern so i would say they would be good for 12 months. i would have driven approx 8000km off the top of my head. that said they were an excellent value tyre in terms of grip etc for the money (i paid 175 each, 2 at the front).

The C drive range and the recently released A drive range is the new generation of tyres from Yokohama. The A539 series is an evolution of the old and legendary A509s. A few frens of mine have C drives in their cars but none drive too aggressively but they ride very well and pretty quiet and they are all v happy with them.

I have a set of BF Goodrich G force sport in 195/50R15 in my EG Si on a set of fat fives and they are great. The tread pattern, sidewall stiffness and breakaway characteristics are v simliar to the Bridgestone RE711s which they don't bring in anymore. Not dissimilar to the BRG GIIIs but much less flexy in the treads esp when the tyres are new. They are made in Thailand, $139each I paid and won't hesistate to get another set. The BFG's used to be the bogan choice of tyres in the bad old days, but now they are wholly owned by Michelin with right up to date R&Ds and know how from the parent company.

As for semi-slicks, I whacked on my set of race tyres (BRG RE540s) from my old BMW2002 racecar onto my E30 3 series for fun for a week. They were horribly noisy ie they rumble, grumble and resonate the whole car but of course much more grip than the BRG S02 tyres I normally had of the same size. Aside from the noise issue and a lot less gentle breakaway on the road they are a lot more puncture prone as they pick up every little rock on the road and of course other debris. With so much attraction to debris on the road your fenders behind the tyres would get a good sandblasting as well.

If it's possible it's best to buy the best hi performance road tyres you can get and another set of semi slick DOT legal race tyres and use that for track work and the occasional fast blast on the streets. They work the best after a trackday wihen all the tyres are nicely scruffed up so why not leave them on for the week following? I'm sure you'll have lots of fun doing that.

i had no problem finding them back in january this year but im not sure about getting them any more. not sure what the A539s are either.

I was tossing up between the Falken 452 and the Falken Semi slicks.
Both are supposed to be great and both are really well priced.
Qstoria, if you don't want semi's then the FK-452 would probably be awesome as well.

Only issue is from what I read the 452 have stiff sidewalls which is bad for traction :(

Check out FK-452 from Falken
They are apparantly very sticky and very good
They are Falken's best tyre and is ultra high performance (before going to semi's etc)
And it is cheap as well, probably around the 200 mark as well

Visit Pats Tyres in Fyshwick. Or call me we'll go together cuz you can bargain the price with them too

NSW ppl can try AAA tyre factory at Guildford in Sdyney, they claim to have the cheapest Falken tyre anywhere in oz. For Azenis RT615, 205/50/15, they quoted me 140 each fitted and balanced. You tell me if that's a hectic price or not.

you can also get toyo proxes r888 for $130 each from the tyre shop next to tempe tyres. these are semi slicks too. i'm running toyo proxes t1-r in 195/50R15 and they seem to have awesome grip too. and i only paid $140 fitted and balanced at Blair's tyres.

this is in sydney.....and i just checked....the toyo r888 in 195/55R15 is still going for $130 each fitted & balanced. (i previously thought it was 195/50R15....but i stand corrected)

thing is if everyone starts buying them from here...they're just gonna jack the price up.......

and r888 is not as soft as re55s

I don't know about $130 for 195/55 R15's R888.

I just rang the guy I go to where I got my Toyo T1R's 205/45 R16 for $174

He said the price for the R888 in 195/55 R15 is $275 each.

$130 sounds fishy, watch out. :thumbdwn:

yep!!!!
going to be gettign a set most probably tomoz. going to bite the bullet and continue saving again for coilovers.

cheapest price iv head for the falkens is $220 if thats a good price im getting a rippper of a deal:)

Matthews tyres in Campsie.

Everyplace I called had them for 195-200.

btw the RT-615 is not a semi slick. It's in the same class as RE01R, AD07, MX etc.
