Just wondering what everyones opinion is on b16 series powered eg's...
i went for a ride in a 92 with this conversion yesterday and i was suprisingly dissapointed :(
it was a jap import b16 ( which correct me if im wrong has more power )
when i jumped in and went for a drive i was left a bit let down
anyone else find this?
in what respect were you let down? My friend had one in which he converted himself and it was really quick in a straight line and around the track..
but my friend's one also had extensive mods to it like coilovers, ECU, LSD, Integra brakes etc.
I'm pretty (ie very) happy with mine...what expectations did you have of it?
It would have been one of the fastest N/A 4 cylinders youve been in ..am i correct?
I don't think the jap import b16a will be noticeably faster to be honest. Don't let the idea of JDM fool you.
And you gotta keep things in perspective, slow as compared to what?
Have you sat in a faster NA 1.6?
well i currently drive an eg with d15 non vtec stockie with exhaust and intake....
i was expecting such a big difference in performance compared to this
.....yes it does go better, there's no denying this, and yes it did rev out hard and smooth....its a great motor dont get me wrong... i was just expecting more of a "fark this thing moves" reaction..
like the first time i went in my mates crvetec turbo in an EK4
i got out of the car and i had the biggest smile and im like....i want new motor.....lol
and i wasnt comparing the performance of the b16 to this... i know this car has some serious money spent on it...
...... the comparison was between my d15 to the b16... i was like is that it!.... i would have thought that it have pulled a bit more.... espcially straight line stuff
especially after hearing great feedback on these motors.. i was i little dissapointed
im kind of glad that im choosing another option over a b16 transplant

Im sure the B16A doesnt have much more torque than the d15.....but its all about the power.
well i'm happy with mine... but i get ya point..
for all the hype with VTECKKkkkkkkkkkK it shoulda been faster... but i'm pretty sure its not meant to be compared on the straghts man... take up to some twisties, downshift into vtec,,,, thats what a b16a is
nah not the fastest n/a 4. ive been in...
ive got a lotus super 7 that runs a N/A 1.6
runs low 13's and 0-100 in 4.5 ish secs
im not bagging it by any means....... maybee i read into this conversion 2 much and over reacted what the performance was going to be!
it did perform quiet well... its kinda hard to explain but i was just expecting more...
it was a bit of a rice car..with all the additional weight extras Big chromies Big stereo install overboard weighty kits etc
maybe if all this was gone it would have had more "punch"
I have to say tho, a b16a civic in in a poor state of tune, is pretty ordinary, maintenance is very important. even just getting the basics right makes a big difference.
the EG6 should be quick though... basically cos its so light.

I don’t get why people want to do this all the time. You have defeated the reason why these are great cars. You will get sick of traffic light wars very quickly. If you want more displacement get a VTI-R Integra engine (or a type R if u can afford it). This is a much better engine than a H22 plus the issues with installing them. I believe that I saw a post on her that said the VTI-R Integra engines were only 500 bucks more than a b16a conversion cant remember what place that was but it was like 5,500 installed. To me that’s a much better option.
However it’s your money and you are allowed to spend it anyway u feel.

Dont do it! its too heavy! it wont be able to turn! u need arms like arnnie to turn it!
meanwhile my mates h22a ek4 is owning some fast itrs.... but then again studley park, mt dandy, they are all straight roads!
i know that im going to be changing the characteristics dramatically by putting this engine in!
but.....my car is definatley not a track car...and never will be...so im not too worried about cornering speed...im also in a town where there aint to many twisties...
and im also after something different....

i already have made lots of parts for this conversion already....
and have researched and organised everything from engineering to insurance.... it seems a relatively straight foward swap.....just its a bit toight in the engin bay!....

it seems that everyone thinks h22a is way to heavy and if your gonna spend mad cash then consider all alternatives?

What's with all the "H22a is Heavy" crap. They aren't even that much heavier than the B-series motors, and yet ppl still say, that it will effect their handling. The only down side of the H22a is the lack of high revving.

Get a K24 instead.
B16A is a nice motor - but is seriously dated nowadays. 160-170ps in a JDM motor seems to be below the spects of an average new hot hatch. I can't say I'm impressed with the power output or delivery anymore compared to a B18C

i was originally going to put a b16 in...... building up matts block and putting a few hot up bits on it etc
yeah i have thought of other motors but it does end up being quiet expensive ( i realise that the h series conversion isnt going to be cheap)
i had originally bought the car for a h22a conversion in December last year and was keen as to swap the donk in asap
but then i started doing research and as everyone has said its a heavy motor....and i kind of shy'd away from it.....
then after being in matts beast it was like....i want power......hehehhe as you'd know after being in that rocket!
recently i went into the details again of putting the motor in etc
and the prices are actually quite inviting.... not as expensive as i first thought
so how much do ya reckon it will end up costing then???

Half cut h22a : $2000
Engine Mounts: $ 200
Springs ( to suit new weight) $ 500
Drive shafts: $ 700
Engineers Cert $ 490
EPA test $ 30
( to engineer i must use standard ecu)
But probly run aftermarket once complied
$1500-2000
Exhaust $500
Install myself with my old man
this cuts cost heaps...
insurance at Just cars quoted at $630pa with all above mentioned and Lowering..Tinted Windows...exhaust.. and Wheels... not too bad i thought
Where do you get half cuts for that price? I'm interested to know because I'm keen to get a spare D16 engine to run lots o' boost :)

Engineering should be cheaper also, im paying $350. Just go and get an aftermarket ECU at a performance shop and they will hook u up with an engineer at the same time
yeah as weq said...i'll be using the brakes off the half cut most likely....althought the engineer told me that i shouldnt need to upgrade the brakes.....( i found this hard to beleive personally ) but until i actually do it,,, im guessing that it would...
yeah the $30 was a charge to cover all printout material and to receive a cert saying that it has been tested etc all that crap.... ie make the engineer happy and vic roads etc thats what the guy told me over the phone....
i realise the conversion snowballs in price when ya start adding things up coz once ya tinker with one bit ya have to upgrade the bit next to it to match.....and so on..... but its just a toy and i dont mind spending money on it if it ends up being fun to drive....
i know it will be a straight liner..... but im not fazed about that...

Cos its Just that simple isn't it. And I'm speaking from experience... 3 long weeks which culminated tonight at 1.30am. And that Wasn't a h22a. Have Fun Installing it with your old man :D If you LOVE mechanices and could do it as a Job you'll enjoy it. If you love mechanics and how stuff works, you'll enjoy finding shit out and then lement the fact that you have to put it all back together again.
yeah should be fun.......theres 3 mechanics in my family!...... and we've done some pretty tight conversions.....so it should be good and yeah i reckon there will be a few late nights...half the fun!
and yeah the half cut is reasonably priced....that was paying cash though ...
:thumbsup: on the DIY. Fair enough you werent impressed with the b16a/EG it was prob stock and riced out. What do you expect bro? try another EG with a b16a with I/H/E/HFC/VAFC tuned on light weight rims and gutted :D :D :D
