DSG to Civic Type-R
A modern transmission, competitive engine and sufficient demand from Australia are set to boost Thai assembly prospects of Honda's flagship compact saloon

Asian Type-R would produce around 220hp.

Honda is set to assert itself as a drivetrain specialist by becoming the first Japanese carmaker to offer DSG (Dual Shift Transmission) in a production model.

Slated to appear in the forthcoming Civic Type-R to be sold specifically in Asia-Pacific markets, the advanced gearbox will be similar to that developed by the Volkswagen Group.

Such a move will boost demand for the Type-R in this region including Thailand where motorists prefer to do away with the conventional clutch pedal.

And as revealed for the first time in Motoring (Sept, 22), a plan to build the Type-R in Thailand alongside the mass-selling Civic has become even sounder as Australia - major export market for Thai-made Civics - is showing demand for it.

Unlike its rivals (see sidebar at right), Honda wishes to make the Type-R as competitive as possible around the globe by building it at four different locations namely the UK, US, Japan and Thailand.

most asia-pacific drivers prefer saloons to coupes or hatches, its the US drivers that prefer coupes and the japanese/euro drivers prefer the hot hatches.

here, we get whatever the rest of the world does not want.....lowly specc'ed cars.

hmm dsg, good on honda but im still a fan of the old clutch pedal! im willing to sacrifice a clutch pedal just to get a ctr in australia tho. i guess time will tell whats going to happen. could you please provide a link to the original article. thanks

DSG is a good thing - saw this in BMI where Tsuchiya (on manual gearbox/clutch) got beat by a DSG auto.

Still, nothing like the feeling of driving with the good old gearstick and clutch.

DSG, hmmm can't make a comment or have opinion because I never drove a car with DSG, but if it feels good and makes car faster I wouldn't mind one

yes dsg is that good.

like everything the germans engineer, it can be a lil bland but its precise and the shifts are scary fast. ur fun comes from using the gears not changing them, as opposed to a manual where a part of the enjoyment is getting that gearshift just right

Get the gearshift just right? Isn't that a given if you have been driving manual?

While I prefer a manual, that DSG with no lag and being a true manual without a torque convertor should give the driver a serious advantage over a manual.

duno too much bout the DSG xcept for the two clutches for each odd gears etc.

but how would upgrading clutch and flywheel work on the DSG? do i have to buy 2 clutches? i assume less wear and tear from the clutch? how the box gona adjust to harder clutches...o man technology :S

The DSG is patented. So you won't be able to buy aftermarket clutches for it. You wouldn't need to replace the clutch anyway since you can't be an idiot and ride the clutch unlike noobs on a manual.

smg is a manual gearbox with one clutch, not two. theyre pretty rough wen u shift gears at low speeds

Obviously you missed the ":p " at the end...

Though a DSG will not downshift as quick as a SMG box though ;)

I think it depends on the software. Depends how aggressive the downshift and throttle blip is. But from the DSG vid, there is almost no lag upshifting, unlike SMG and SMGII

Well, if the DSG design can handle the 420hp of the Audi R8, it should be able to handle 40-50hp gain over stock. It's not at the limit like CVT trannys where there is a limit to the torque it can handle before the belts start slipping or snapping.

we've got +50hp and it handles it fine.

cars like the golf gti have 147kw stock and there are many chip manufacturers who allow the car to have 180-190kw when their chip is applied and is also approved for use for the dsg box.

so the dsg design may prove to be durable enough for a 220hp engine which is na without the torque of a boosted engine let alone a chipped one at that.

btw this is assuming that honda is applying a similar technology to that of VAG

DSG was designed by BorgWarner. So if Honda decides to license it from BorgWarner as well, then it will be a similar design. Which means they will have options that will handle at least 184kW, 320Nm as used in the Golf R32.

I read that Bosch is making their equivalent of DSG as well. Wonder how will they get around patenting issues.

ecu reflashes. we've got on in our gti and it moves it to 188kW and 410nm. theyre pretty common now. dsg is used in a lot more application too, including the bugatti veyron, so we know it has the capacity to handle some power, especially any power a modified civic will make and if ur really concerrned, the uptake on the DSG box by a few manufacturers will result in some aftermarket stuff pretty soon.

ECU upgrade chips. Their ECU can just be rechipped with custom software to enable some special features. But the main reason is to increase the pressure limit for the wastegate and richen the fuel mixture to compensate so that more power is made.

chips are pretyt effective on turbo cars coz they can wind up the boost. otherwise they change things like ignition timing and fuel deliery.. trying to get the most out of the factory engine which is usually not tuned properly. our was like 2k so bang for ur buck is there
