Hey guys i just got a new mechanic, who does most his work at home during the nite and with renault during the day. anyway he suggested that a bang for your buck improvement to car (after i/h/e) was to have the car ported and polished and/or get a new heavy duty clutch that transmit power better through the drivetrain...
is he being honest here?
have the car ported and polished will result in larger displacement
size.. e.g from a 1.6lr to 1.8lr. Generally, the displacement tells you something about how much power an engine can produce. Therefore, larger displacement equals more power. Correct me if i'm wrong.
Dude, having a heavy duty clutch won't transmit power better to the drivetrain as your clutch isn't currently slipping.. Uprating to a heavier clutch will only assist power delivery if your car is making too much power for the stock clutch to handle.
about the port and polish, i wouldn't recommend it just yet.
a P&P won't increase engine displacement, it just smooths out the delivery of unburt fuel mix, and the exiting of exhaust gases as the stock head is quite rough. on an almost stock car, I wouldn't recommend it as the gains are marginal.
Its a big(ish) job, and you'll be without your car for at least a few days. cos the head needs to be taken off for the P&P to be done. a P&P also costs alot of money.
Probably a replacement or piggyback [acronym:8bd5a534aa="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:8bd5a534aa] would be the better choice as it will give you more gains and will probably even be cheaper.
perhaps a better bang for buck mod is to change to stiffer engine mounts. Stiffer engine mounts will mean the engine will rock less and power will be delivered more efficiently to the wheels. However, Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) may increase.

if u have I/H/E on ur b16a, the next step is lightened flywheel & [acronym:e4cfc9fd36="Engine Control Unit"]ECU[/acronym:e4cfc9fd36] (like hondata). U will get a fair increase in performance.
get a new mechanic man that knows hondas.
Port and polish doesnt change anything in displacement.

P&P = enlarging tb diameter?

pnp depends on where u pnp, and i u meaning getting bigger displacement, its called boring!
Not saying ghost is anythingm, but if ur mechanic recommend a PnP, seriously get another mechanic. for those mods...
I assume your running N/A, so I/H/E is good but about port and polishing is a tricky bussines. Smoothing out your your ports and chambers disturbs the turbulance required for the proper mixing of air and fuel. This is not the issue with turbocharged cars as the mixture is force-fed and the presure is usualy enough to mix things up.Quote:

My understanding with any engine is that you are trying to smooth out the entire flow of air comming into the engine, within the engine (cylinder), and air going out of the engine and reduce turbulence as much as possible.
Turbulence for required for proper mixing of air and fuel???
Sorry but I still think that the spray pattern your injectors produce at any given pulse is what really matters in mixing the air and fuel up.

That statement is not entirely BS...im sure it is a topic which could be brought up , and argued indefinielty - mostly due to the fact that some manifolds are designed for a certain amount of turbulence to atomoize fuel particles....BUT then again MOST manifolds are designed with $cost$ in mind from the manufacturer...thus , ANYTHING smoothed out will increase flow.
Myself too...i am not a pro at all....(still waiting for Chuck or Dave to come on and properly inform us :))
And...before anyone asks again...."port n polishing" refers to the inlet manifold and head work only...."boring out" refers to enlarging the actual piston sleeves in the block , allowing for larger bore (surface area) pistons ( such as 1.8 pistons in a 1.6 etc)
start launching at every traffic light, wait until you clutch frys and replace your clutch and flywheel =D

thanks for all the replies guys, its a great help cos i was suspicious that he suggested a port/polish b/c it means 900 bucks labor for him... like i never thought it could do my car any harm... but yeh. Otherwise the guy is a top mechanic though.. charged me 50 bucks to change all 3 fluids ( i provided fluids) and like 80 bukcs for timing belt...
sounds dodge, and the thing is, anything goes wrong with that, and say ur belt gives, u screw ur engine, his not liable..
i'm pretty busy man, you have to come around and see my new toy sometimes soon, it'll blow your socks off
