Dyno test - Buddy club Pro-Spec Exhaust

OK guys, just came back from a session at the dyno to test the Buddy club dual Pro Spec exhaust.

Here's a before and after dyno test performed in shootout mode on IS Motor Racing's dyno tonight.

I suspect exhausts have to bed in and potentially more gain would be had if we dyno tested again in a few weeks. Although some people are very particular about dyno reading accuracy, and would prefer to see dyno test performed at the same time on the same day, from feedback I have gotten from Chris at IS Motor Racing, you could put a car on their dyno now and 6 months later and only get 1kw difference.

A healthy gain! A/F is a bit crazy now with the exhaust, some tuning would be good down the line.

Want a before and after for when I put the Invidia Test Pipe in too.

Doubting I'll get much gains. Good to see some can be achieved though for more than just sound....

This is the only dual exhaust in the range. The rest are singles and much lighter because they are single. Having said that, the stock single piece exhaust is so damn heavy that I've saved 10kg with the Buddy club dual! That's a very decent weight savings. Anyways, more pics and full review tomorrow. I'm going to test the silencers that came with the kit too (2 of them of-course).

Yes I checked the Spec IV. One piece and it's ridiculously light. A lot lighter than the dual Pro Spec I have (I love light weight so I was a little upset it wasn't insanely light lol). The Spec IV's had mixed reviews on the sound. How do you find it? Apparently it's more of a raspy sound whereas the Pro Spec is super bassy and deep.

I've got a fair bit of in cabin drone coming from this exhaust. It's pretty loud from inside the cabin, you can drive it in a way that you don't get much drone... something I will perhaps get used to. But the gains made are great. I suppose gains come at the cost of noise.

I think all aftermarket S2000 exhausts have that drone... dependent on how loud the drone is varies from exhaust companies.

I find if you hold the V3 at 5500rpm, its dead silent, but as soon as it moves either way, esp into vtec, its exceptionally loud.
100km/h about 4000rpm, drone, no matter what.... I'm used to it though.

You can use body deadener to decrease the drone sound though.

Well the genius of it is in the muffler as I'm sure your aware :p

upto 5000rpm it's the same as stock when you drive normally(roof up), even with the roof up in VTEC on the track the engine sound still overpowers the exhaust in car, roof down it's all exhaust, it really opens up (sound wise) when you get into VTEC...

For example, on a track like winton or calder, the you can't hear the exhaust when the car goes past you on the straight, unlike most other aftermarket exhausts!

BTW the sound is good, I've only heard compliments about it, honestly! haha maybe some people from cruises I've been on can vouch for that lol!

It's definitely not raspy, a stock exhaust w/o the resonator is raspy! I've heard the Pro Spec, definitely not that loud, it's hard to explain but I love it, too bad mines falling to bits from crap build quality :S

REVIEW:

Make: Very nice welds, love the symetrical design more than anything else. Really nice piece that splits the mufflers. Fitting was easy and perfect, ISMR guys said it was a pleasure to install, plenty of room to get hands in and around, perfect fit. Strange then that Rix had so much trouble with the DC2R design, perhaps they've picked up their game? We'll soon find out when we install and test other exhausts from the range.

Sound: Sound combined with the Injen CAI is just nuts at WOT in VTEC. Overall, a nice balance of noise coming from intake and exhaust now. Hitting the START button is a different experience too as the exhaust growls when the engine's started. The note is far from raspy, instead a very deep bassy tone. Really nice on idle. I've driven it around for a couple of days now and I have to say it generates a lot of in cabin drone. It's not that loud from the outside, but inside the car it drones a lot. You can reduce the droning, depending on how you drive it, and what gear you're in, but it's definitely not for everyone. I've fitted the silencers that came with the exhaust today and instantly noticed a lot less noise but there's still a fair bit of drone. I'd be curious to see if cutting out the main resonator and putting in a bigger hotdog would help to reduce drone, might be something I will look into in future. I'm also curious about doing a dyno run with the silencers on.

Performance: All the noise the intake and exhaust is adding makes the car feel 10 times faster, of-course, it's not 10 times faster though. Taking off at the lights and 1st into 2nd gear at slow speeds is a lot smoother, less hesitation.

doesnt look good with silencers in imo. but i guess it would help keep your sanity when driving lol

I too am looking at getting an Ingen CAI. Then a new exhaust later on.

The problem is I just love the CAI sound, on my CRX the exhaust killed that awesome noise that comes from the CAI :-(

This is what happened to my BC exhaust! Bad design resulted in the exhaust sticking out from the bottom of the car and consequently scraped every speedbump/driveway I went over.

Maybe you should tell people that you work for BC Justinfox..

Regardless, I had to get this fixed at my OWN cost even though, it is less than 1 year old and yet was not covered under the warranty...The best BC could do was to try and sell me Justin's exhaust at a discounted rate. pretty poor.

This is the repair job. I was lucky to have the exhaust checked out in time because the crack was about 2cm from going the whole way around the circumference of the resonator.

ROLLED. The way it's hanging down so low doesn't seem right at all.

I've just spoken to the team at Buddy club. Buddy club suspects an installation problem as the exhaust design really should not be hanging that low. I have a stock cat, and will fit a brand new exhaust, Spec IV (exactly the same as yours) TOMORROW. If the exhaust hangs as low as yours in your pic above, Buddy club will cover your repair costs. :)

ROLLED: Can I ask if you have an aftermarket cat, or headers? And have you ever been hit from the rear?

We took the time out this morning to take my exhaust off and to put a brand new Spec IV on (very nice looking exhaust BTW! I'd say it looks nicer than my dual!) and the exhaust is not hanging as low as yours at all. AND my car is lowered quite a lot. This is leading us to think that your mechanic has installed it wrong OR you might have been hit from the rear and something has been bent, forcing the exhaust down lower OR you have an aftermarket cat/headers which have forced the joint to be lower.

Please reply with more facts. Our pics of this install will be up shortly.

Nope never been hit from the rear, the exhaust was installed professionally by an exhaust shop, I have the stock headers and cat. This exhaust has been scraping since day one btw...and as far as I am aware there is only 1 way to install this exhaust?

The only thing that really comes to mind is that it was manufactured incorrectly as I can't imagine any company designing an exhaust that would deliberately sit this low!

I am more then happy to get it checked out by any one of your certified mechanics in Melbourne. I was also told that you had no BuddyClub Spec IV exhausts in the country???????

I think that Buddyclub should replace the exhaust entirely because this is the second problem I've had with the exhaust. The first one, was from a hanger that broke from the exhaust, I was then supplied with the hanger for a WRX exhaust which needed custom fabrication to work on the S2000, which I paid for out of my own pocket. I am going to PM you my number.

It's a tough call - many aftermarket headers hang down a lot lower than stock headers do and people scrape these aftermarket headers on things. It's a give and take in those situations as the aftermarket performance parts are usually a lot bigger in diameter than stock parts.

It's true that this model of Buddy club exhaust does hang down lower than the stock item but it makes more power and it's a lot lighter than the stock part too.

If you did scrape this exhaust for a good part of a year then by all means it will get damaged. Whether or not the damage caused by scraping is covered under warranty is what I am looking into right now. If it was a manufacturing defect, there would be no questions in a replacement, but this is the way this exhaust has been designed (you could argue it's not a great design, that is another story).

It's clear with a rim, that if you were to scrape it on a gutter, that warranty would not replace your rim. The same could be applied to this exhaust, in that if you were to scrape it on driveways and speed humps, then you are damaging the exhaust yourself and thus it wouldn't be replaced under warranty.

ROLLED: I'll talk to the Buddy club team and do the best I can to offer you some sort of resolution, as you're obviously not happy. Thanks for the PM. I have your number and will call you with more news ASAP.

2. That had nothing to do with the exhaust/exhaust mounts

I know for a fact that all Buddy Club Spec 3 exhausts for DC5R's are built with the design flaw of having the top of the b-pipe sit lower than the rest of the chasis, hence why most DC5R spec 3's scrape around the neck.

Everyone I know who owns one accepts this fact and will more than likely scrape their exhaust even with the stock AUDM DC5R ride height, however if Buddy Club are handing out free exhausts, show me where to sign up...

the guy that did the paint work on ur car at motorware did work on their widebody chargespeed s2000. which was in autosalon magazine.

yourfather, If you remember the pictures you'll also remember that they did not affect the exhaust mountings nor did it have any structural damage. It was purely superficial damage.

and please don't get me started on the guy who painted my car from motorware, I am quite aware of what cars he has painted, I can show anyone in real life how "off" my bumpers are, not only are they off, Motorware did not fully sand back my bumpers and now they paint is cracking and falling off on both the front and rear bumpers...I have been advised by professionals that this is due to too many layers of paint on the bar. They charged me prices for a full respray of the bars, yet they only painted over the existing yellow.

Do you plan on putting on the Buddyclub AP1 Headers on aswell and reviewing them?

I would like to hear a review on them. I've recently purchased a AP1 and would like a bit of info on these headers Buddyclub have to offer, as well as combination with the buddyclub exhausts!

I though that you got an AP2 bar for the rear.

from the buddy club products I have on my car though, I haven't had any issues with build quality.

I have the AP2 front and rear bars, from a 2006 model painted originally in yellow, the bumpers had only been on the previous car for 500kms/3 days...

geez. well...

I guess if you come down to a cruise when I have mine done, you can have a look at the job they're doing on my front and rear bars at Glen Waverley panels.

I didn't get to choose where to send my car because of Just Car. which is bullshit....

Yep same here I am with Just Cars and my S2K is getting repaired at a place called Sheens. And like yourself I couldn't choose a panel shop.
