my car sounds like a rexy...normally idles about 1100 but now it drops to 500...
i come to a stop and exhaust smoke is thick...burning oil obviously...
and the water temp goes above halfway...but my coolant level hasn't changed...

Sounds like a headgasket.
Sounds like ur car is running on 3 cylinders or less..
sounds like bad detonation 2 me, motor could be on its way out.
is dat repairable???
headgasket yes. Anything is repaireable.
gonna end up costing u more than the car man... time for a new car...

its piston ring :p my car do the samething but only SMOKE on high RPM
the wrex sound should be gone after awhile.. but den the engine is screwed up.. either u rebuild ur engine / recondition or just get a new engine with lower milage..
CHECK your sparkies.. if they are dipped on oil or oil arround it..
Fuel consumption is getting worst and worst.. den ur car should retired.
symptoms :
hard start when the engine cold
black smoke come out when u start the car
running on few cylinders when u start ur car.. until it revs up and all normal..
eingine recond would cost about 2k... well thats how much my mates car cost...

try to see the sparkies first. and ur spark leads see if any oil puddles on it.
ur car wont last long. and u gonna paying more fuel den u have too..
i suggest u to get a low millage engine. and put it in.. instead of rebuilding it.
rebuilding will cost you more..
if you are not thinking to keeping the car for long just swap engine.

my camry did the same thing.
sits hi and low on idle. poors out smoke ramdomly while on idle. chewed oil like no tomorrow.
got the head gasket fixed..
and still munched oil. and idled up and down and still blew smoke.. then 2 weeks later it was a camry but sounded like a rexxy. changed the leads and spark plugs thinking it was that since the head gasket was fixed. but then realised it was piston rings. one cylinder seized up then sold it for $400.
running on 3cyl.. then GG for the motor. then i got a civic

do u's know if honbits have whole motors or just parts?
take it to a mechanics and do a leak down test might be a quick fix or an expensive one..
U may have been referring to the head.. if thats gone, then yes itll be expensive
but u said head gasket which is just a rubber gasket that stops the oil from leaking between the block and the rocker cover = cheap!

yep head gasket... no point doing any tests... you described all the symptoms already
i can do a compression check for you (not a leakdown test) and prove it.
excluding a full rebuild, labour of changing the head gasket (pulling the head off) and milling the head flat again is worth far more than a 2nd hand motor and half the value of the car... sell it... unless glen wants to pull it apart at mates rates

people say its the head gasket which it probably is aswell..
but i say piston rings. as its happened to me.. got the head/gasket fixed machined cleaned flushed.
but still blew smoke and idled funny then 2 weeks later after the fix.. the cylinder seized ran on 3 cyl.. and then gg..
and thas with the head gasket fixed reco head n all.
yea i had the money...but some 'stuff' came up...

OUCH ... thats gotta hurt wen ur car just give up on u .. well.. get something to run arround while u going to fix ur car :thumbsup:
go to whreckers just find the engine u need.
JUST engine with out any gearbox or other crap.. coz u gonna use your own gearbox and stuff that u already have in ur car. and try to do DIY as much as you can :) that will save u money.

well its best to take it to mechanic if u do wanna get it fixed. or a better diagnosis.
coz if ur gonna take everyones word here and say its a head gasket then ur gonna run into the same shit as me.. gettin the head gasket and head fixed when it could also be ur pistons and piston rings aswell.. not worth the hasslle IMO

if it does.. im sure the rings have already shat itself and u have a seized piston..
or maybe the sparkies/leads may need a change which i doubt.

if ur car struggles heaps, well comparing to how it was running before. then im sure ur only running 3 cylinders.
coz my car felt fine and normal speed just when taking off it sounded like a rexxy... i was still hooning with 3 cylinders. when i got to steep hills GOOD GAME
or even easier.. while ur car is on idle.. pull out a lead and see iof theres any noticeable change in the idle.. if there is a change like the engine shaking more when u pull it out that means that cylinder is ok.. but if one of them doesnt make a difference then thats the one that shat itself
one at a time though. pull one lead out ---> notice a change?--->plug back in---->next lead until u find the one thats working
(but not sure if this is the LEGIT way of checking)

hahaha...i remember my car feeling like this about 3 yrs ago but worse...i couldn't get any power at all...and the car would begin idle at 3000 then work its way down to 1500 after about 5 mins...
all they did was clean out my carbies...

the mech confirmed it...head was pretty much fkt...would cost atleast $1100 to fix...
anywayz i ended up gettin a replacement motor for the time being...
500bucks...
