opinions?

Hey guys, im just after some quick opinions!

I currently got 94 civic sedan gli, dont know the engine (i think its d15 something) - non [acronym:5c6a614048="Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control"]VTEC[/acronym:5c6a614048]

Now i want a bit more speed but which way to go? (not for track racing, i just want to go quick off the line at lights - so its pretty much straight!)

Should i
(a) do engine conversion, get b16a, or b18c and turbo it
(b) get a civic coupe vtir and turbo that

which would work out cheaper and more effective?
Are the coupe vtir's only [acronym:5c6a614048="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:5c6a614048]?

Will there be much performance difference between [acronym:5c6a614048="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:5c6a614048] and [acronym:5c6a614048="Double Overhead Cam"]DOHC[/acronym:5c6a614048] and relating to turbos, which engine will like it more?

Coupe Vtir's are [acronym:d07a6da9e1="Double Overhead Cam"]DOHC[/acronym:d07a6da9e1] vtec

There are some [acronym:26776b3097="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:26776b3097] Coupes floating around too - it threw me for a six when I saw one a few years ago. But they aren't VTiRs - that's where the confusion actually comes from.

i tink sohc coupes have rear drums and the rear indicators are orange.
i oso tink that soch vtec engines are 3 stage vtec which are tuned for efficiency and economy rather than power....just my opinion so dun flame me

Yep, that's right. Plus they've got steelies and no body-kit (front spoiler and side-skirts), though I'm pretty sure the latter is available as an option. Also, auto transmission is available. VTi-R is manual only.

Basically, the coupes come in three variants: GLi, VTi (I've never actually seen one of these on the road) & VTi-R.

turbo is your best modification as far as price / straight line performance.

its a debate. a d61y1 will cost u around 6-800 \w everything needed for the conversion, and budget around $3000-5000 for a 13 second turbo kit, DIY.
On the other hand, a b16a +turbo as more potential, u will probaby be looking at atleast $4000 above what the [acronym:893302a5ca="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:893302a5ca] (conversion+turbo total) aill cost u because b-series parts ar more expesnive - but it will go faster!!

Cost vs performance depends on many MANY factors. Are u capable of DIY? Do u have hookups in workshops? Cheap labour? Cheap parts? 2nd hand parts? and the list goes on and on!~

i thought by turbocharging ur engine u actually decrease it's life by 130k kms or somethin

You can't put a specific amount of kms or time to the life of an engine..... it is all dependant on how you build it, service it and if you have the nessecary supporting components to make it all work together, efficently and reliable.

Knowing how to drive the thing also helps a great deal.

Wow, im so suprised you guys are suprised bout the [acronym:e2e2e49c38="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:e2e2e49c38] Vtec coupes.... here in SE suburbs in melb... thats all i EVER see ... ive seen a GL once in my life and was shocked.. and never knew they existed! :P..

I got 2 mates with coupes... one VTIR and its just a sweet ride...
The other got a green vti [acronym:e2e2e49c38="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:e2e2e49c38] turbo charged off his bro in law... he claims it beats SSs and Skylines at light drags.. so if thats ur thing.. then go for that...

You seem to be pretty intent on turboing it, the [acronym:e2e2e49c38="Single Overhead Cam"]SOHC[/acronym:e2e2e49c38] vti will not be as stronger base as the [acronym:e2e2e49c38="Double Overhead Cam"]DOHC[/acronym:e2e2e49c38] vtec VTi-R but you will save alot theres about 5k price difference in them (last time i checked carsales anyway :P) ... It depends how much money you have and how much ur willing to put into the car...

As muthafutha said, the rear brakes are drummies... so if your lookin at turbo charging u might want to think about converting them as well as turbo will give u some high speeds and u want to be able to stop adequetly...

in terms of strength, both engines have thier weaknesses. The b16 has higher compression (and higher pricetag), which means less room for error in running gear and tune. But u get more power per psi. On every engine there are weakpoints, for hte b16, im sure its the ringlands, for the D, its the rods.

Well i dont think i will do the conversion in my current car, simply because the coupe is so damn sexy!

Due to the fact that the sohc has rear drums, how much to convert that?
Also, would the dohc be 'stronger and last longer' due to turbo conversion compared to the sohc?
Also is it required to replace the internals after turbo conversion - some say yes u do, some say no u dont, its quite confusing!
