Are 17" Rims too big for a DC4? + more questions

^^ main question and...
I've finally saved up some cash to kill the hub caps (members forum pics thread) :thumbsup:.
Today I went to "Motorsport Wheels & Tyres" (In Melb) and saw a good set of 17" wheels with Kumho tyres fitted/balanced for $900

Just wondering whether these prices for these type of rims are reasonable and whether there are any other places that might sell for cheaper.

wot u pay is wot u get.

$900 for 17s with tyers IS cheap.
personaly i dnt think 17s r too big for tegs as long as u hav the right height.

but depends on the rims ur gettin, it will effect ur handeling aswell. i had an old set of 17s on my car be4 and the handeling felt shit/hevy as. but with the new set of 17s ive got on i cant feel the difference with the stock ones

I got 17s on mine and its lowered roughly 1inch to 1.5inch all the way around, when I have a car full of people the tyres scrub on the guard when turning nearly every corner.

Thats very cheap, but the tyres are crap. I would get the rims only, then buy decent Pirelli/Yoko/Dunlop tyres

This is what I am personally worried about.
Will double check the tyre size and quality when I head there tomorrow =)

Also, do you think lowering the car after putting new bigger wheels/tyres is a must?

the handeling will b different depends on the weight of the rims...
should run 205/40/17 on ur teg

Btw, can anyone give me a approximate price for lowering. Looks like more $$$ needs to be spent :(

I got mine lowered and new shockers put in for about 400 bucks, but i only got my springs chopped coz im a cheap bastard, im sure if you got tougher springs or coilovers you wouldnt have the problem i do of scrubbing.

I got 215/40ZR17 Toyo Tranpath SW tyres, so having the wider rims and tyres would also be another cause to the scrubbing.

You get what you pay for. I got TE37s with RE55s for just a touch over $5k. Couldn't imagine what you get for $900 with tyres. It's all about budget though I guess.

Hmm a bit of progress from my decision on whether to get 17" wheels for a DC4
Heres some info:

"i've read that 1 lb of unsprung weight saved is like 6 lbs of sprung (regular) weight saved...so 12 lbs saved would be like taking 72 lbs off the weight of your car...that roughly correlates to like an extra 10 hp or so..."

Now I'm not sure. The main reason is that they were selling the 16" for the SAME price as the 17"! So now my brain is really confused :confused:

I'm running 17s on my car and they're fine at stock height and with King Spring Lows. Although the splash guards to scrub a bit under braking/turning. Mine have been worn away.

You could cure this with getting a lower profile tyre. Although it's better to keep the stock rolling diameter.

17s. The tyres were cheap. $1200 for the set. The wheels were pretty much standard Rays pricing. $38**. I'm upgrading to CE28s 9s front, 8s rear once car is ready for track again.

A quick update:

Today I ended up purchasing the 17" rims these are the ones that I got for $990 with 205/40/17 80W HP101 Zeetex tyres

What are the possible problems involved with "cutting" the springs (another cheapo version?)

Please save money to do it properly. Cut springs can be dangerous. They can sometimes fall out on rebound thanks to the shock travelling further than your spring. Cut springs are also poorly matched to your shocks and will see a shorter lifespan for your shocks. Just do the job right the first time. Save up money and get a decent spring/shock combo or coilovers a little later.

Eibach aren't cheap by any stretch. They're a premium European brand. If you want cheap springs get King or K-Mac. But remember, you get what you pay for.

definatley lower it first, it will look so much better with the less gap between the wheel arches.

i have 17's on my teg and lowered around 3.5 inches and i think it looks and feel great. some work had to be done to the front inner wheel arches (bashing and removing of areas) but its all good now :)

Those wheels are 5 stud.... Arent DC4's 4 stud?

I got my springs cut, noticed afterwards that it makes alot more noise, like clunking and shit.

They are multi-stud so fit pretty much all stud types (I believe)

Does the drive quality deteriorate after cutting springs?

I havent noticed a real difference, just gotta go up gutters, driveways and speedhumps slower than i used to.

hey man if the rims are five stud and multi fit the will only fit 5 stud cars just with diffrent 5 stud pattern , so if u have four stud i dont think it will fit unless it is 4 stud multi fit , i had 19'' on my teg for about 2 weeks until i got defected and almost ripped my front bar off. The car use to scrape and rub everywere. im going back to seventeen or eighteen , i think 17'z is the way to go cause they are not to big and still handel quit well got for speed as well.
with cutting the springs it really depends on how many coils you take off to how bumpy it will get, i have cut the springs in a few cars all seems to go well no problems . JUST MAKE SURE YOU CUT THEM ALL EVEN IF YOU DO DECIDE TO CUT DONT WANT CAR DIFFRENT HEIGHTS. good luck

With cutting springs is it actually legal? So I can go to a local suspension place and get it cut?
I only wish to cut as much so that there isn't that noticeable tyre gap
How many inches would you recommend it be dropped?

depends how low u want to go like i think mayb one an a half to two inches wuld look good , not sure if a tyre place will do it , dont think it wold be to legal aswell. well not for insurance purposes it may not be, but if the car is higher then 100mm at the lowest point then it should be fine

cutting springs is illegal man and if u wanted to do it then u'd have to get someone to do it as a backyard job.. i think why not if u'r only gona do it temporarily but over the long term ur better off getting aftermarket springs.. also have u thought about resetting ur springs instead? its safer than cutting them..
