On my run around (1990 2.0L Camry)
3rd gear crunches a lot, to the extent I have to double clutch to downshift and go into 3rd slowly
Now, I realise that it'll never go away, but is there any oil to at least make it a bit better?
I have ATF Dextron III in it now which is recommended for that car
It crunches less when it's cold/more when hot
So, should I get thicker oil? Or just leave what's in it and deal with it?

your using atf dexron 3?
that's for autos? who recommended that?
dexron 3 is Auto box oil.
Most manuals use a thicker oil like 75-85.

Drain that fluid and put Toyota MTF in there (buy it from a toyota dealer), and if it still crunches then its likely the Synchros are gone and need replacing.

The factory recommended 'oil' for at least some manual boxes is ATF.
i heard putting engine oil is good.
my mate put mobil1 10w-30 in his b16a civic GB and it shifts like a dream
how many k's on the current clutch ?
Check ur synchros. Mine are gone and crunch like ****. It's fun.
+1 to some manual boxes needing ATF.
If it crunches worse when hot i would be putting all my money on your synchros being shagged and changing the oil wont do diddly-squat.
I used engine oil in my civics 5MT tranny - works fine, no probs.
I believe Honda MTF is quite similar to Honda engine oil anyway.
yeah, honda used to use engine oil for the gearbox too.
but since then, they have changed that.
even for the older models.
check your master cylinder and your slave if there is any leaks that can course it to crunch..
It's only 3rd that crunches
I do assume it's the synchro for it
Though the gearbox was rebuilt 70,000km ago. Clutch is strong
Like I said though I realise it wont fix the problem, but maybe an oil that will help?
Also, the ATF is recommended for that car
redline light shock, or you could even try automatic transmission oil for a cheaper alternative which also work great from what i heard.
isnt ATF recommended for manual corrollas not camrys?
Is GM Syncromesh compatible with the camry?
Fulli Sik 12" sub woooooofaaaa will overcome crunching problems. just crank it up yo!
once syncrho is gone theres no oil to stop it from crunching.
time for 2nd hand box... or rebuild :p

i dont know how atf can be recommended for a manual gearbox.
id rather stick with genuine honda products for everything.
IF you think what ATF does, it lubricates gears and bearings, but is also formulated to work with clutch packs etc. There's no reason why it won't work to do a good job of lubricating the gears and bearings in a manual box, the only issue being if it will work with the synchro rings properly. Some synchro rings are designed to work with ATF. I woudn't use it in a box where it isn't specified.Quote:
