boost in power lol
I would be checking if the High cam is actually engaging.
if the high cam wasnt engaged would the vtec still scream??
Clean the vtec solenoid mesh screen.
Always a good start and with high kms its probably filthy.
Also oil change/filter and sparkplugs if you haven't already done it.
Its probably A ok. Can you hear it cross over? Do you feel an increase in pull?
It definatly opens up, but theres no "sudden boost in power"
Vtec has a bad sterotype.
Probably has old plugs, old oil and old fuel filter.
why do u you two treads on the same thing?

=P
stupid question.
but is the vtec crossover at WOT (wide open throttle).
or gradually rising rpms.
vtec is engage by oil pressure, correct me if im wrong.
throttle position
exhaust manifold pressure
oil pressure
travel speed....
what else lol
i think some people might have a lack of knowledge about VTEC
assuming its like turbo... must be those VTEC pictures that get around lol
LOL yeah..... When the engine is crossed the vtec point, then the engine is working normally like designed. Below the vtec point, the engine is in a fuel economical grandma mode. People think that vtec is like turbo and if they can make it come earlier. LOL
the engagement of the hi cam will be more noticeable depending on throttle position vs road speed too..half throttle going up hill into 3rd gear will feel ¨less¨ pokey than full throttle on flat surface :)
vtec engages at 5800 rpm , full throttle , id suggest getting it serviced timing could be off as well.
That's quite wrong! I could feel the cross over point more, when it was stock, than when I had my PFC installed. The Dyno graph explains it all. This was the case for other 10 or so stock DC2R I have driven.
But yes, you should be able to feel the cross over. Nothing like boost kicking in (yO!), but yeah, you should definately feel it.
As stated previously, change oil, filter, and spark plugs.
Also high cam is slected not ONLY, on Full throttle. You can be touching the throttle rolling down hill, and once it hits 5800rpm, high cam will be selected.
You should feel the car pull when VTEC engages, it's not drastic, but it's there. Sound-wise, it's not obvious on a stock setup. I added a CAI and now the switch over point can be heard pretty well.
when i had mine standard the "kick" was more noticable.
once tune the crossover point is smoother and the dyno graph was more linear
2 videos you should watch this shows how vtec works
vtec working
and this one shows what vtec should sound like on a 100% stock itr
watch from 40s - 50s for good example
vtec in an itr
VTEC engagement depends upon:
rpm
engine temp (temp sensor)
throttle position (throttle position sensor)
oil pressure
vehicle speed (speed sensor).
good luck hope this helps
agreed, that whistle sounds awfully like my CAI at certain RPM's
pretty sure the stock box and the whole arm intake on stock models muffle most of the vtec engagement so it's barely audible.
but on the other hand i've never actually driven a ITR - maybe they're slightly different?
he as the mic in the engine bay i think
check your oil level
The sound you hear is not a vtec sound. It is the sound of an engine with lumpy aggressive cams. Here is a vid of a 4AGE which doesn't have variable valve, but sounds like a Honda vtec engine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIuq8...eature=related
I thought that was iVTEC?
I was under the impression tht VTEC engages at a certain RPM and is dependent on oil pressure.
Isnt iVTEC was the one dependent on throttle position?
ie - regardless of how hard u put ur foot down, VTEC kicks in at 5800 in the DC2R where as if you put your foot flat in an ivtec at say 3500rpm, ivtec will change the cam profile early to aid in bottom end torque?
Correct me if im wrong.
No, there are many flavours of iVTEC. The one that you are describing is used in the 1.8L Civic's R18A engine. The K series engines' iVTEC is the one that changes at a set RPM, just like the DC2R. The difference is that the K series iVTEC has intake cam variable timing through the cam sprocket, which the B series VTEC doesn't have.
Also, changing to highcam at low RPM decreases torque. It doesn't increase it.
Alrighty - thanks for that!
As said many times, check your oil level as you shouldnt rely on the dash light! if your oil is low you will still get a vtecish noise but no power increase, and if your only new to vtec then you could think that its changing over. Oh and always make sure the car is warmed up properly otherwise it will do the same thing!
probly totoaly off.. but could be that your clutch is starting to give way, i had to replace mine in my civic not long ago and before i did thevtec would scream its nuts off but not reali go any faster.. chnaged the clutch n its quieter and goes harder now.
dunno just my 2 cents
clutch slipping?
lol
i doubt it.....
i think he means it doesn't 'kick in'
when ur clutch is slipping
ur car literally goes no where
i meen he said he can hear the scream so the vtec could be kicking in
but as for the clutch not necesarily.. ur talking if the clutch is already completely stuffed.. but if its not completely dead its still gona go its just not going to grip as hard.
when u change gear when floging it does the clutch grip strait away?
well the clutch is kinda worn out...yeah it doesnt feel like its gripping straight away. its due for a major service so i'll get it all cleaned out and maybe it'l perform better after the service if not then itsa time to change the clutch
Major service does not involve cleaning the inside of your engine.....
I can't believe the technical genious of some of the people here -- Reminds me why I only search the for sale forums.
Honestly mate, just take it to a Honda Certified mechanic and get it checked out... There are so many variables that could cause your problem that its useless asking these keyboard warriors.. Seriously.. A couple of ppl have stated most likely scenarios, but most have demostrated a complete lack of logic/knowledge.
If you hear the crossover, then it is engaging. VTEC is hydraulic, so if it is actually engaging, then oil pressure is ok (yes, if oil is low, and cornering high G, then vtec will disengage due to non-pickup etc).
If it isn't making noticeable power it is possible the ECU is running in safe mode, do an ECU CEL check (do a search).
Maybe even check compression leak down test.
Thats just a starter, as ppl have stated, check all filters, injectors etc otherwise. You sound like you're not so mechanically minded, so as above, go to a mechanic and pay them the money to do what they should know best.
k thanx dude.....will do
