1993 Honda Civic Si vs 1995 EG Honda Gli Hatches

Hey guys, just have a quick question about these two particular models.

I'm looking at buying one, but after viewing the redbook info on them I noticed that the Si has a similiar motor as the vti model with a 1.6l D16 whereas the gli has a 1.5l D15. I think the d16 is 96kw as opposed to 74kw for the gli.

However, the Gli weights in at 987kg compared to 1016kg for the Si. Is that extra weight simply from the motor or is there extra weight somewhere else? Obviously I am a noob and I remember reading an article somewhere on here about vti's weight a lot more etc, but I couldnt find it.

Finally, whats the diff between Si and Vti except for the sunroof and was there any new honda technology introduced between 93 and 95 for the eg models?

just to get the newer car...

motor wise wouldnt they both be slow? one will just be a bit slower then other...

the SI was a DOHC and the gli a SOHC.
The SI from what i've seen is quicker than the gli

Is the Si v-tec?

Yeah obviously safety is first, but the jackass that owns the gli hasnt replied to my emails or called me back after leaving a voicemail, so screw the guy. It's been a week since i've tried contacting him and if his serious about selling his car, he should pay attention to the interest generated.

If the Si is in better condition I would get the Si. Simply because it is a DOHC and has rear disc brakes.
I think the only updates would have been airbag steering wheels, but Im not 100% sure.

dont confuse between gli and gl though. gli may come with airbags and injection instead of carb.
get the si (compared to gl/gli) IMO, rear sway bar, rear disc brakes, besides the engine.

si is dohc non-vtec.
si vs vti all same, except different interior fabric, airbag and sunroof (hence vti is heavier).

that's the link for the Gli civic. Looks pretty neat in those pics, but the guy won't reply so meh. ASking price seems a little too high though.

The Si version is about 2k cheaper with 118 clicks (seems a little low for me). Goin to check it out tomorrow to see how straight the body is and we'll go from there.

Another quick question...Eg3, Eg4, Eg5 etc, is that just corresponding to the year of the vehicle? ie 93, 94, 95?

No those codes correspond to the trim level.
EG3=Breeze, EG4=GL&GLi, EG5=VTi. if you look on www.redbook.com.au you can see what model is what code.

no eg# is the chassis code eg3 carby eg4 efi eg5 efi all wheel discs front and rear arb's = best audm model.

i'd go the si hands down if both were in the same nic

eg3 = eg breeze
eg4=GL and GLi
eg5=Si and VTi

so its a no for the year lol..

yea 118000 seems a little low, i bought a 92 with 131000, so many engine problems i found out after i bought the car so yeh, i would only by the Si if it had log books and all that with it, if not i wouldn't do it, unless you come with a mechanic who throughly checks through the car

trust me, its not worth it buying risking buying a car that seems dodgey and to good 2 b true, (i have a real bad past experience with buying that 92 civic, so yea)

bought my si with 214 xxx on the clock still hasn't missed a beat. different cars man will all vary on how well they are looked after.

winded back numbers? but car was a bunch of trouble, 92 carby GL -_-;; so yeah, just telling him to becareful! because if they winded it back, they have something to hide ;)

Yeah apparently has log books so I'll check it tomorrow, then get an authorised NRMA mechanic to go through it as well. Is it illegal to call up insurance companies to check if its been in an accident or anything like that? how do you find out if its been in one or not? Sorry never really bought a car yet and its usually cars under 10k that have the most problems and things to hide :P

maybe it has done so many km's it went back to 118,000 :P

also you can buy new clusters so that may have been done too.

get the car checked out thoroughly.

GLi has lesser torque than both Si and Vti.
Si or Vti would definitely out perform GLi
Reason:
1) GLi is SOHC - No Vtec. It's just a normal single cam car and that's it.
2) Si is DOHC - No Vtec. Think about 2 human beings competing in a race. One using 1 leg to run (GLi) another using 2 legs (Si) to run. Who would most likely be the winner?

Comparing between specs Vs specs, it is apparent that Si can do much better than GLi.

If we are comparing between stock to stock Si and Vti, I think both would be go on par. It depends on what kind of performance and characteristic you want from your car. Vti would definitely gives you that slight push when Vtec kicks in at 5200. However, Si provides you with constant power with torque till the red line.

I reckon that you should do more test drive with GLi, Si and Vti in order to know and feel what suits you the best.

I personally think that Si is the best.. :P Because I am driving one!

single cam non vtec is no fun on gli =(

the eg vti single overhead cam vtec(d16y5 or soemting) has a diff engine compared to the si double overhead cams non vtec (d1a8)

i believe that the si was actually the "Sports" model of the eg's hence the "S" and the vti was actually the luxury model hence the sunroof

i bought my eg Si at 175,000kms for about 5-6k... havnt had much trouble mine , in my opinion the eg si is only slightly faster then the gli even though its specs is around 20kws more but it is an old car, but u can definately feel more power and fun in the EG si :)

also get a full mechanical check! i got a compression test on my engine before buying it ~ and also you can check any history like accidents , stolen , any money owning then u can call vic roads and ask or whatever its called in your area if u dont live in vic!

for major accidents and finance owing, you use REVchecks. costs about 20, or $40, cant remember, basically its a page u can print off listing all major accidents n any finance/ if any/ owing.

wells i'm not sure that the 122000 are for real, but yeah go have a look at it, sounds reasonable for Si.

eg vti really d15?? i thought they were 1.6lt!

but yea 5k for 122,000kms is considered a bargain if in good nick in melbourne..
i have not found a single eg si under 150,000 for a price under 7k

costed me 100$ for a body + compression check from a local mechanic
and free of cost to enquire about a car from vic roads in melbourne!

Well this is a canberra car (even better), but has a previous histroy in Sydney so im a bit skeptical about that. Oh well an inspection report will tell me some answers...Had a look at it today. A few trolley dents here in there and a couple scratches that seem buffable...Will take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it goes before taking anything further.

buy the si over a gli!!!! all the si's and vti's i was looking at a few weeks ago either had really high km or were asking 8k+

i just bought a eg5 (vti, but was concidering the si as another option) my daughter has a gli and is so dissapointed after being in the vti, si's go just as well as the vti but dont have the vtec thats really the main difference (my inlaws had the si when it was new and i loved that all those years ago)

That is right. I tried my friend's Vti when he bought it and I realised that there is not much difference in terms of power. The only difference is the change over sound which makes you feel good. However, I don't feel a single push at all when vtec kicks in.

On the other hand, Si would be a choice to go if you are looking forward to future mods. You can consider force induction. Apparently, D16A8s are pretty good for turboing.

In conclusion, if you are looking for some vtec-ing with push. Get cars with DOHC Vtec (B16A, B18C, B20B, K20A and etc) in it. But however, that is defintiely going to cost you a bomb. If you are looking for daily driving and with some power in it. Vti and Si would definitely the one to go. You will not go wrong with either of them. Just beware of the vehicle's history and etc.

She was like it's a 1.6 and since the 1.6 are only in Si and Vti, I assumed it was an Si until I noticed the badging next to the radiator... 'EG4'. Haha thanks god I asked you guys what Eg3, eg4 and eg5 mean... FAIL haha

So going to move on and have a look at that black one sometime next week. The guy finally answered his phone so will have a look at that next week sometime.

Ok so I picked up a Gli, (Awesome nick, pretty much too good to pass up.) I had a read about types of oils you guys used, OEM, 15w, thickness etc, so now im confused.

What would be a good oil to use for my 94 eg4 Gli? Looking to do an oil change tomorrow.

I also notices a buildup of grease toward the back of my engine block above the CV Joint? Just some grey shit . Any idea where thats coming from? I am still learning the ropes.
