Oil catch cans are connected via piping between the rocker cover breather hose and your intake pipe. The breather hose is there to ad some warm air into the intake just before the throttle body, however on many, if not all cars oil particles travel with the air through that pipe, making the air dirty - so the oil catch can is there to stop that oil.
there was a thread somewhere *I'll try and find it* with a couple pics taken after the car was driven at the track - they showed how much oil was caught in them.

you can find this particular product here

brand doesnt matter, as long as its internally baffled with steel wool, some dont have internal baffle so it doesnt filter as good.
cool cheers for the help i look on be ebay for a cusco
or just look through the traders here or for sale items...

will this fit my car ED Honda Civic 1990 GL D15B4 engine
what do u think off the price
so there not hard to install do u have and info on installing them
I think its a 1 size fits all type thing
Sorry , that isnt correct - Mike, the small pipe that runs from your inlet pipe to the cam cover is actualy a one-way inlet pipe...air is sucked INTO the cam cover so a "filter" here would not catch any oil at all.Quote:

The oil catch can connects inbetween the PCV , and the inlet manifold. There is a positive flow of air/oil from the lower of the block and the pressure is blwon thru the back , thru the oil seperator , and then thru the Positive-crankcase-valve. THEN it enters back into the inlet manifold. This is the place for the extra filtering element.

Above is a dodgy DIY method i made awhile back.
An oil catch can is supposed to be run inbetween your PCV piping, and inlet manifold. Simply acts as a filter of excess oil vapour in the intake charge. Make sure it is sealed and free of vaccuum leaks !
Finally , any brand is OK - as long as it has a inlet + outlet , and some way of releasing the excess oil once in a while. Also , "internally baffled" cans will catch more oil vapour than simple "Cans".
AH... I C... youre right there Benn.
I might have got it confused that it connects into that pipe i mentioned before- because i know you can ad a small breather filter into that pipe. Sorry!
Are you sure tho that its a one way valve and air gets sucked INTO the rocker cover? cos im pretty sure its actually pushed out into the intake - as its the air thats trapped under the rocker cover when the engine is running.
Back in my 'GOLF' days I disconnected that pipe and hooked up a garden hose to it - hiding it under the car. It was creating alot of 'headache making' fumes - but the car went harder!
yeah - the actual pipe itself acts on air pressure ( you will notice the end is cut at an angle to promote suction), so if you disconnect it from the "intake charge" then vapour will actually come out that rocker cover pipe in small amounts - BUT it is actually made as a "inlet" for the circulation of oil vapour throughout the head. Putting a breather here or can inbetween has no point...only the "bling" factor :)
BTW other cars may work different - all i know is most hondas work on the inlet of air pressure thru the head + bottom end to keep everything nice and lubricated and oil flowing etc.
Yeah - that could have been simply a VW thing that it breathed OUT through there...
Cheers for clearing that up Benn... learn something new everyday :P
i got the cusco off ebay thanks for all your help
