Would it be weird to run 225/45 on 17x8.5 rims? Everyone I've met with 8.5 wide rims run 235 tyres. Any detrimental effects if you use 225 instead?

Nope thats fine. There may be slight stretch, but thats OK.
Using those specs currently, no problems so far.
iv got 215/45 on a 9, 225 on an 8.5 will be fine, minimal stretch aswell.
do you want block walls or stretch?
or dare i say, muffin tops? lol
block wheels look like ur slick tyress, from rim it goes straight up, muffin tops are like what u see on commodores with a massive profilethey buldge out and so forth
the rubber you are choosing will look extreamly nice, very little stretch.
here is a teg with 235/45/17 on an 8.5

you have 10mm less rtread, ill be honest, u wont even notice it. (pending brand of tyre)
8.5 inch across = 215 profile. Your 225 is fine. 235 is too much imo unless running stiffer sidewalls
^ What's your opinion on running 225 on 9 inch rims?
in what regard lol?
Will it look too stretched?
And, is it even safe to do so? Is 225 pushing it when it comes to 9 inch?
i drift a 215/45 on a 9 and i have no issues,
the stretch is minimul aswell, 225 will be fine, if u are still unsure, tires are sold with a rim width suggestions
why arnt u wanting to run a wider rubber?
is the car lowered?
Trying to be cost effective I guess, and not have to buy another set of tyres if I don't need to (I know that sounds cheap lol). My current 225 tyres fit my 8" wide rims perfectly, so wondered about the same 225 on 9" wide rims I'm thinking of buying.
Yeah my DC5R is lowered on coilovers, 1 finger gap all round.
